OCHO RIOS · DECEMBER · 18.4° N
The Atlantic hurricane season closed on November 30, and the sea off Ocho Rios spends December averaging 83.1°F at its daily peak. Days settle around an average high of 81.9°F, nights hold at 73.2°F, and the sun is gone by 5:36 p.m. on the 15th. That mix is what fills the north coast between Christmas and New Year’s, and what makes December the month most first-time visitors fly in on.
December also takes something back. Rain totals 3.43 inches across about 8.2 days wet enough to measure, roughly one day in four, while January runs drier at 2.99 inches over 6.4 days. November’s water was two degrees warmer. Both gaps are small, and neither one moves a trip on its own.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · OCHO RIOS · DECEMBER
December hands Ocho Rios an 83.1°F sea and 81.9°F days with the hurricane season already closed, at the cost of 8.2 wet days and a holiday calendar in the last third of the month.
AVG HIGH 81.9°F · SEA 83.1°F · 8.2 WET DAYS · DARK AT 5:36 P.M.
Go for: water at 83.1°F, an average high of 81.9°F, and a month that sits entirely outside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season.
Think twice before: locking the week of December 25 without an all-in nightly quote, and before counting on dry mornings when 8.2 days of the month collect measurable rain.

Ocho Rios weather in December: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | December | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 81.9°F | 27.7°C |
| Average low | 73.2°F | 8.7°F spread day to night |
| Precipitation | 3.43 in | Monthly total |
| Days at 0.10 in or more | 8.2 | About one day in four |
| Days at 1 in or more | 0.5 | One December in two |
| Daylight, Dec 15 | 11 hr 04 min | Sunrise 6:31 a.m., sunset 5:36 p.m. |
Every December figure here comes from the ERA5 reanalysis run by ECMWF and served through Open-Meteo, 1991-2020, for the grid cell at 18.4074° N, 77.103° W. That is a model rebuilding the atmosphere over a box of coast and hillside, not a thermometer standing at an airport, and a station record would not land on the same decimals. On that basis the month averages a high of 81.9°F (27.7°C), a low of 73.2°F, and 3.43 inches of rain.
Wet days deserve translating out of the decimal. Around 8.2 December days collect at least 0.10 inch, so something measurable falls on roughly one day in four, and the 0.5 figure at an inch or more means a genuine soaking turns up in about one December in two. No grid cell can say which hour it arrives. Swim early, keep an indoor fallback loose, and a rain day becomes a reordered day.
Between 81.9°F by day and 73.2°F at night there are 8.7 degrees, which is small enough that nothing in the suitcase needs weight to it. One long-sleeve layer covers a boat ride back after dark and an over-chilled dining room, and a rain shell beats an umbrella across eight wet days. Our packing list handles the rest.
Daylight on December 15 runs 11 hours 04 minutes, sunrise around 6:31 a.m. and sunset at 5:36 p.m. on Jamaica’s year-round clock, converted from the UTC times published by sunrise-sunset.org. Dark comes before most people eat. A waterfall trip or an inland drive therefore starts in the morning if it is going to finish in the light.
Can you swim in Ocho Rios in December? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine series puts the surface off Ocho Rios at 83.1°F through December, averaged over 2015-2024. Read the method with the number: that average is built from daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour mean would give. Other sea-temperature tables run a degree or two cooler for the same water, and most of that distance is method rather than ocean.
At 83.1°F the sea sits within a couple of degrees of the day’s air, so the entry costs nothing and an hour of snorkeling takes no body heat out of you. A rash guard here is sun protection. Afternoon swims get clipped short by the calendar instead of the temperature: with the sun down at 5:36 p.m., the last comfortable hour on the sand ends around five.
We found no verified December wind or swell series for this stretch of coast, so we give no numbers on either. If a catamaran trip or a reef snorkel is the reason you booked the week, ask the operator on the morning itself, and treat the one inch-plus rain day as the likeliest candidate to be moved.
How busy is Ocho Rios in December? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
December is high season by the calendar rather than by any series we can put in front of you. The hurricane season shut on November 30, and Christmas and New Year’s both fall in the last third of the month. We found no occupancy data and no monthly room-rate data for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month the year’s most expensive and quote no average nightly rate.
Booking lead time gets quoted freely and sourced rarely. We could not verify one for this town, so we name no number of weeks. What is fixed is the calendar: December 25 and January 1 anchor demand, and the days either side of them are the part of the month with the least give. The flights page tracks the routes in, and our trip-cost breakdown shows where a week’s money goes.
We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging tax rate or how it is banded, so we publish no percentage. Ask any property to quote an all-in nightly figure with tax and service charge included before a deposit leaves your account, then check the total against the cost page.
One line item genuinely changes this month rather than any other: where you sleep relative to dinner. With the light gone at 5:36 p.m., a room you can walk back to after dark removes an evening drive from every day of the trip. The base comparison sorts the options, and the transfer guide covers the run in from Montego Bay.
Things to do in Ocho Rios in December

December is the first full month with the storm season behind it, closed since November 30, while the sea still holds 83.1°F. Boat days, reef days and inland waterfall days all stay available at once. Spread across 31 days, the 8.2 wet days work out at 1.3 days of measurable rain over a five-night stay, so a single itinerary rarely loses more than one morning.
The fixtures are Dunn’s River Falls at the western edge of town, the Blue Mountains a long day’s drive inland, and the Luminous Lagoon over at Falmouth, which only works after dark. We could not verify December admission prices or opening hours for any of the three, so we quote none, and each of those guides carries what we have been able to check.
What the month changes at these places is the air, not the water. We have no water-temperature reading for the falls themselves, so use the figures we do have: a climb under 81.9°F starts cooler than the same climb in November’s 83.4°F, and the 73.2°F nights make an evening outing comfortable without a layer. The lagoon trip needs darkness, and in December darkness has already arrived by six.
We found no free-admission dates published for December, so we list none. The part of the month that costs nothing is the light at both ends of the day: a 6:31 a.m. sunrise at a reasonable hour, and a 5:36 p.m. sunset you can watch from the sand without building an evening around it.
Ocho Rios in December: a two-day itinerary
Put the swim first on day one. At 83.1°F the sea asks nothing of you at eight in the morning, and an early hour in the water buys the middle of the day for Dunn’s River Falls and the driving at either end of it. Be back on the coast by four. The usable light runs out at 5:36 p.m., so dinner is a night-time meal in December whatever hour you sit down.
Day two goes inland or stays on the coast, depending on the sky. A Blue Mountains run wants the whole 11 hours 04 minutes of daylight and an early start, and our driving guide explains why the mileage understates the hours. If the morning brings one of the month’s 8.2 wet days, keep the mountain for another trip, drive the coast road instead, and treat an inch of rain as an hour indoors.
Ocho Rios in December vs November and January
| Measure | November | December | January |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 83.4°F | 81.9°F | 81.4°F |
| Average low | 74.7°F | 73.2°F | 71.8°F |
| Precipitation | 4.44 in | 3.43 in | 2.99 in |
| Days at 0.10 in or more | 11.4 | 8.2 | 6.4 |
| Sea surface | 85.1°F | 83.1°F | 82.2°F |
Air temperature barely moves across the three: 83.4°F in November, 81.9°F in December, 81.4°F in January, two degrees from end to end. Rain does the separating. November collects 4.44 inches over 11.4 wet days, December 3.43 inches over 8.2, January 2.99 inches over 6.4. The sea slides the same way, 85.1°F to 83.1°F to 82.2°F, and all five rows come from the same ERA5 and marine series as the December figures above.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy a sea at 85.1°F for 3.2 extra days of measurable rain, with the hurricane season still officially open until the 30th. Shift four weeks later and January trims the month to 6.4 wet days and 2.99 inches, cools nights to 71.8°F, and gives back 0.9°F of sea warmth. Neither move changes a daytime high by more than two degrees. The full-year view puts the other nine months alongside.
Is December a good time to visit Ocho Rios?
For a swimmer the answer is yes on the numbers: 83.1°F water, 81.9°F days, and a storm season shut since November 30. For anyone whose plans depend on dry mornings it is a softer yes, because 8.2 wet days is one day in four and January does better. If the holiday calendar is the worry, the first half of the month carries the same weather without Christmas attached.
When the answer lands on no, January is the month to slide into: 2.99 inches over 6.4 wet days, water still at 82.2°F, and the holidays gone after the first week. November suits the opposite traveler, the one who wants 85.1°F water and will accept 11.4 wet days plus a hurricane season that stays open until the 30th, as the season page sets out month by month.
Of these three months, December is the one that puts a sea above 83°F together with a storm season already closed, and it does it on 11 hours 04 minutes of daylight.
The last word
Book the bed you can walk home to, put the swim before the drive, and hold one morning loose for the wet day the month usually delivers. The season this trip sits clear of peaked back on September 10, and NOAA closed it on November 30, the day before the month began. If your dates refuse to bend around Christmas, the first two weeks carry the same 81.9°F days and 83.1°F water as the last two.
