Ocho Rios in January: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and How It Compares to December

January hands Ocho Rios the combination most winter visitors are shopping for: afternoons around 81.4°F, sea water averaging 82.2°F, and a monthly rain total that has already fallen from December’s 3.43 inches to 2.99. The Atlantic hurricane season closed on November 30, so the storm calendar plays no part in a January booking.

What the month withholds is daylight and the last of December’s warmth in the water. On the 15th the sun is up for 11 hours 11 minutes, rising at 6:42 am and setting at 5:53 pm, which ends a waterfall day earlier than most first-timers plan. December’s sea runs 0.9°F warmer, and February’s rain total is 1.04 inches lighter.

The normals above come from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis served by Open-Meteo, averaged over 1991 to 2020 for the grid cell at 18.4074N, 77.103W. That is a model square covering water, town and the first hills behind the bay, not a thermometer standing at an airport, and the difference usually shows on the overnight lows. Take 81.4°F by day and 71.8°F at night as the shape of a typical January day rather than a station record you could look up for one date.

Those 2.99 inches arrive across 6.4 days that register at least a tenth of an inch, roughly one day in five. A full inch inside a single day averages 0.2 occurrences per January, so most years deliver none at all. In practice the realistic worst case for a given afternoon is a shower that empties the beach for an hour, not a front that parks over the coast.

Between the 81.4°F afternoon and the 71.8°F dawn sits 9.6 degrees, enough that a boat at 7 am and a veranda at 9 pm both feel cool in wet clothes. One long-sleeve layer covers it, and the fleece stays home. A light rain shell beats an umbrella on an exposed pier, and the packing list has the rest of it.

On January 15 the sun rises at 6:42 am and sets at 5:53 pm, 11 hours 11 minutes of usable light, converted to Jamaica time from the UTC figures published by sunrise-sunset.org. That puts the practical end of a river or waterfall day nearer 4:30 pm than 6. It also makes the early start cheap: at 7 am the air is still close to its overnight 71.8°F.

Can you swim in Ocho Rios in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s marine series puts the sea surface off Ocho Rios at 82.2°F in January, averaged over 2015 to 2024. Read the footnote alongside the number: it is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above what a 24-hour average would give. Tables that average the full day show a cooler figure for the same water, and neither version is wrong.

At that temperature nobody stands at the edge doing arithmetic. An hour of snorkeling needs no wetsuit, children come out bored rather than cold, and the water sits 10.4 degrees above the dawn air on the sand beside it. Divers stacking three tanks into a day often still want a 3mm shorty (est.); a single afternoon dip does not.

We found no wind or swell series for Ocho Rios, so we describe no January swell pattern and give no wave heights. The storm calendar we can date: NOAA runs the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, and January falls outside it. The hurricane-season guide holds the rest of that timeline.

How busy is Ocho Rios in January? Crowds, prices and booking lead time

We found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for Ocho Rios, so no month here gets called the cheap one or the expensive one. January’s place in the year is a calendar fact rather than a price one: it is the second full month after the hurricane season closes on November 30, and it follows the year-end holiday weeks rather than containing them.

Our working rule for a winter week on the north coast is to hold the room and the ride in 8 to 12 weeks out (est.), earlier when the dates are locked to a school break. The flight moves first: routes from the US are thin from some cities, and the transfer guide carries the options and prices for the drive from the airport.

We could not verify Jamaica’s current lodging-tax rate or the bands it applies in, so no percentage appears here. Ask the property for the all-in nightly figure, tax and any resort fee included, before the card goes down, and get that figure in the confirmation email rather than in a chat window.

If one line of the budget deserves the extra money in January, make it the ride from the airport rather than the room category. A 5:53 pm sunset turns any afternoon landing into a coast road after dark, and a private car leaving when you clear customs beats waiting for a shared van to fill. Our driving guide covers the road itself.

Things to do in Ocho Rios in January: Dunn’s River Falls, Fern Gully and the White River

January is the month when a full outdoor day on this coast needs no hedge: 81.4°F in the afternoon, 6.4 wet days against December’s 8.2, and a hurricane season that ended on November 30. Stack a waterfall climb, a river and a boat into one day and the binding constraint is the 5:53 pm sunset rather than the sky.

Dunn’s River Falls is the town’s anchor, the terraced climb rising straight from the beach, and its own guide goes through the climb in detail. Fern Gully carries the road inland from the bay under a tree-fern canopy. The White River east of town is the rafting and tubing water, and the Blue Mountains make a long day by road.

The rivers change little across these three months, and the air does not move much either. January’s 81.4°F afternoon runs 0.5 degrees below December’s and 0.9 below February’s, so what separates the three at a waterfall is how often the sky interrupts: 8.2 wet days in December, 6.4 in January, 5.2 in February. That is the whole seasonal difference at the top of the terraces.

We found no free-entry dates published for January at any Ocho Rios attraction, so we name none, and we did not verify which stretches of shoreline charge for access. The hotel desk is the fastest route to a current answer on beach fees, and the national things-to-do guide lists what else the island opens up from this coast.

Ocho Rios in January: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Out by 7 am with the air near 71.8°F, at Dunn’s River Falls for opening (hours unverified, call ahead), climbing while the lower terraces are still shaded. In the sea by 11, when 82.2°F water reads warmer than the breeze. Lunch inland and out of the sun, a swim at 3, the last one at 4:30, since sunset lands at 5:53 pm and dinner happens under lights.

Day two goes east to the White River for rafting or tubing, then back along the coast with Fern Gully on the outbound or the return. If one of January’s 6.4 wet days finds you, the month’s own numbers favor tenths of an inch over a full one: move the river to the afternoon, drive the inland leg while the shower passes, and hold the boat trip for whichever day looks clear.

Ocho Rios in January vs December and February

Measure December January February
Average high 81.9°F 81.4°F 82.3°F
Average low 73.2°F 71.8°F 71.6°F
Precipitation 3.43 in 2.99 in 1.95 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 8.2 6.4 5.2
Sea surface (daily maxima) 83.1°F 82.2°F 81.2°F

February is the driest of the three at 1.95 inches over 5.2 wet days, and the warmest by day at 82.3°F. December holds the warmest water, 83.1°F, and pays 3.43 inches across 8.2 days for it. January is the coolest of the trio in the afternoon, though the entire spread on the high is 0.9 of a degree, and it lands between its two neighbors on rain, wet days and sea temperature alike.

Shift four weeks forward and you gain 1.04 inches of dry weather and 1.2 fewer wet days, paying a degree of sea warmth for it, 81.2°F against 82.2. Shift four weeks back and the water is 0.9 warmer at 83.1°F, with 1.8 extra wet days and 0.44 inch more rain on the week you booked. Nights move too: December’s 73.2°F low sits 1.4 degrees above January’s.

Is January a good time to visit Ocho Rios?

Yes, when the water is the point. Sea at 82.2°F, air at 81.4°F, and a hurricane season already closed make January a dependable swimming month on this coast. No, when the trip is built on one perfect dry week and the dates cannot move: 6.4 wet days is not many, and it is still more than the month after.

Take February instead if dry matters more than a degree of sea: 1.95 inches, 5.2 wet days, highs of 82.3°F, and 81.2°F water as the price. Take December if swimming is the whole trip and 8.2 wet days reads as acceptable for 83.1°F. The twelve-month view sets those two against the other nine.

Of the three, January is the only month that puts sea above 82°F next to fewer than seven wet days.

The last word

Book the room and the ride from the airport, then keep the days loose: with 6.4 wet days scattered across 31 and the sun gone at 5:53 pm, the January plan that survives is the one you can flip by an afternoon. One date worth carrying in your head, from NOAA: the Atlantic season peaks on September 10, four months behind you by the time you land, so the storm calendar plays no part in this decision. Keep the last swim for 4:30.
