OCHO RIOS · FEBRUARY · 18.41° N
February hands Ocho Rios the driest stretch of its winter: 1.95 inches of rain in an average month, spread over 5.2 days, with highs of 82.3°F and lows of 71.6°F. The sea off the bay runs 81.2°F. Those numbers come from a model reanalysis rather than an airport thermometer, a distinction we spell out below before leaning on it.
What the month takes back is small and worth naming. January’s water averages a degree warmer, March’s air a degree warmer, and the light is still short: 11 hours 35 minutes on February 15, with the sun gone by 6:10 pm.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · OCHO RIOS · FEBRUARY
February is the driest of Ocho Rios’s three winter months, 1.95 inches over 5.2 wet days, with 82.3°F afternoons and a sea at 81.2°F, one degree cooler than January’s.
HIGH 82.3°F · LOW 71.6°F · 5.2 WET DAYS · SEA 81.2°F · OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: water time with the fewest wet days of the winter quarter, full-day inland drives that rarely lose an afternoon, and a month that falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season.
Think twice before: booking February for the warmest possible sea. January averages 82.2°F against February’s 81.2°F, and March’s air is a degree warmer at 83.3°F.

Every figure here comes from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis served through Open-Meteo, computed over 1991 to 2020 for the grid cell at 18.4074° N, 77.103° W. That is a model estimate for a square of the map, not a reading taken by an instrument at an official station. Reanalysis and station normals diverge, most often on the overnight low, so read 71.6°F as an estimate rather than a measurement and 82.3°F as the shape of an afternoon.
An average February records 5.2 days with at least 0.10 inch of rain. Call that measurable rain about one day in six, with 1.95 inches for the whole month, which in practice means showers that cross the bay and move on. A beach morning is rarely canceled by it. An inland drive occasionally collects an hour of wipers and a wet windshield at a scenic pull-off.
The gap between 82.3°F by day and 71.6°F before dawn is 10.7 degrees, narrow by mainland standards and wide enough to notice on an open boat after sunset. One long-sleeve layer per person covers it, plus something dry for the ride back from the water. The full kit, including what the rain days actually require, sits in our Jamaica packing guide.
February 15 gives 11 hours 35 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:34 am and sunset at 6:10 pm local time. Jamaica keeps one clock all year, so those times hold through the month without a shift. Anything that needs full darkness can start soon after six rather than late in the evening, and dinner is a night event either way.
Can you swim in Ocho Rios in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Ocho Rios averages 81.2°F in February. That figure is the mean of daily maxima across 2015 to 2024, so it sits a shade above what a full 24-hour average would report: the water at 7 am is cooler than the number suggests, and the water at 4 pm is close to it. Tables built on 24-hour means will print something a little lower for the same month.
At that temperature there is no entry shock and no clock on the swim. An hour of snorkeling is comfortable for most adults without a shorty, and children stay in until somebody calls them out. Set against January’s 82.2°F, February gives up exactly one degree, which no swimmer will feel. The month you pick for water in Ocho Rios is decided by rain, not by the thermometer in the sea.
We found no wind or swell series for this stretch of the north coast, so we describe no surf and no boating conditions. What the calendar does give is the storm window: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, and February falls outside it entirely. Our hurricane-season page covers the months that do carry the risk.
How busy is Ocho Rios in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What the calendar says is plain: February is northern winter, the stretch when Americans fly south, and it sits outside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane window. For conditions on the ground since the last major storm, we keep a separate update.
We also have no booking-window data for the town, so we name no number of weeks. The lever we can name is the flight: airfare from the US and the ground transfer are the two lines that move most on a Jamaica budget, and both get decided before anyone looks at a room. Routes and seasons sit in our flights guide, and the ride in is priced in the transfer guide.
We could not verify Jamaica’s current lodging-tax rate, so we quote no percentage. Ask the property what it adds at checkout and read the total rather than the nightly line, because the gap between the two is where a February week quietly grows. Our trip-cost breakdown splits a Jamaica week into flights, beds, food and transport.
One upgrade changes February specifically rather than the trip in general: water you can reach at 7 am without a drive. With the sea at 81.2°F and only 5.2 wet days in the month, swimming time is the thing being bought, and a property on a swimmable shore turns an early hour into a second beach day. Where to stay in Jamaica sorts the coasts by that test.
Things to do in Ocho Rios in February

The rain column is the month’s argument: 1.95 inches over 5.2 days, against 2.99 inches over 6.4 days in January and 2.76 inches over 7.2 days in March. Plans with a drive at each end, a mountain road, a boat, a waterfall climb, lose fewer afternoons in February than in either neighbor. That is the practical difference between the three, and it is the only one the data supports.
Dunn’s River Falls is the town’s set piece, a climb up a river in a human chain, ten minutes west of the cruise pier. The Luminous Lagoon at Falmouth runs only after dark, further along the coast. The Blue Mountains take a full day with a driver. We could not verify current admission at the falls or the boat fare at the lagoon, so we print neither. Check operators when you book.
None of those places changes its water in February. The air around them does, and that is what makes the season: 82.3°F on the climb turns a cold river into the reward rather than the ordeal, and the gorge holds shade through the hot middle of the day. The lagoon needs full darkness, and darkness arrives at 6:10 pm mid-month, so the boat fits between the beach and dinner rather than after it.
We could not verify any free-admission day or any dated February event in Ocho Rios, so we list none. What costs nothing beyond transport is the shoreline itself and the road climbing into the hills behind town, and a February afternoon spends both well: 82.3°F air, a breeze off an 81.2°F sea, and usable light until 6:10 pm. The wider menu sits in things to do in Jamaica.
Ocho Rios in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 6:34 am means a swim by seven on empty sand, breakfast at eight, and the falls or a snorkel boat between nine and noon while the temperature climbs toward 82.3°F. Take the hot middle in shade or indoors. Back in the water at four, sunset at 6:10 pm, dinner after dark with the long-sleeve layer in the bag for the walk home at 71.6°F.
Day two adds the drive: the Blue Mountains inland, or the coast road west with the lagoon boat after 6:10 pm at the end of it. If the sky turns, and it does on roughly one day in six, swap the order instead of the plan. Rain of 1.95 inches across a whole month arrives as showers, and a shower of that size rarely costs more than an hour. Driving in Jamaica covers the roads either route uses.
Ocho Rios in February vs January and March
| Measure | January | February | March |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 81.4°F | 82.3°F | 83.3°F |
| Average low | 71.8°F | 71.6°F | 71.9°F |
| Precipitation | 2.99 in | 1.95 in | 2.76 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 6.4 | 5.2 | 7.2 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 82.2°F | 81.2°F | 81.6°F |
Across the quarter the air warms and the rain comes back. January averages 81.4°F by day with 2.99 inches over 6.4 wet days and the warmest sea of the three at 82.2°F. February cuts the rain to 1.95 inches over 5.2 days, lifts the high to 82.3°F, and lets the sea slip to 81.2°F. March takes the warmest air, 83.3°F, and the most wet days, 7.2, with the sea back up to 81.6°F.
Shift four weeks later and you buy one degree of air and 0.4°F of sea, and you pay two extra wet days. Shift four weeks earlier and January returns the warmest water of the three, 82.2°F, for an inch more rain. Overnight lows barely move at all across the quarter: 71.8°F, 71.6°F, 71.9°F, a spread of three tenths of a degree, which is why the packing list is identical in all three months.
Is February a good time to visit Ocho Rios?
Yes for anyone building the trip around water and outdoor days. Five wet days in twenty-eight, an 81.2°F sea, 82.3°F afternoons and no hurricane risk make a two-day plan hold together. No for a traveler who wants a packed events calendar, because we verified no dated February event in Ocho Rios, and no for anyone who has been told the water is warmest now, since January beats it.
If the answer is no, pick by what you came for. March gives the warmest air of the three at 83.3°F and costs two extra wet days, which suits a trip spent mostly on a lounger. January gives 82.2°F water and an extra inch of rain, which suits swimmers with loose plans. Both months are laid out against the rest of the year in the twelve-month verdict.
What February holds that neither neighbor does is the combination: the fewest wet days of the winter quarter, 5.2, an afternoon at 82.3°F, a sea still above 81°F, and a calendar sitting clear of the June-to-November storm season.
The last word
Book February for the rain column, then stop optimizing. An average February in Ocho Rios records not one day at an inch of rain or more, which is why a two-day plan survives contact with the sky here in a way it does not in July. Pack the long-sleeve layer for 71.6°F before dawn, put the lagoon boat after 6:10 pm, let January’s extra degree of water go, and if the whole trip is still open, our seven-day route shows where the town fits.
