NEGRIL · DECEMBER · 18.27° N
December gives Negril 82.6°F afternoons, 0.90 inch of rain for the entire month, and a sea still averaging 84.3°F. It also sits outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which closes November 30. For an American traveler booking a week of beach nights, that combination is the whole argument for flying south between Thanksgiving and New Year.
What the month takes back is daylight and elbow room. The sun sets at 5:41 pm mid-month, so a late-afternoon boat trip ends in the dark, and the Christmas weeks are the year’s loudest stretch on the West End.

NEGRIL AT A GLANCE · DECEMBER
December is Negril’s driest warm month of the three around it: an 84.3°F sea, 0.90 inch of rain, and holiday demand that decides your budget more than the weather does.
OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON · SEA 84.3°F · SUNSET 5:41 PM · BOOK BEFORE THANKSGIVING
Go for: swimming without a thought (the water runs warmer than the air), a rain risk of 1.7 days in 31, and a month with no hurricane watch attached to it.
Think twice before: arriving in the Christmas to New Year stretch without a room already held, or planning anything on the water after 5:41 pm.

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 18.27° N, 78.35° W and read on September 8, 2026. That provenance matters. A reanalysis models a square of coast and water, and it is not the same instrument as an official airport station, so a station record can land a degree or two either side. What the cell gives for December is an average high of 82.6°F, an average low of 75.2°F and 0.90 inch of rain across the month.
Only 1.7 days in an average December collect 0.10 inch or more, which is measurable rain about one day in eighteen. Divide the monthly 0.90 inch by those wet days and the typical rainy day carries roughly half an inch. In practice that is an hour under a roof with a drink while the sand dries, not a canceled afternoon or a rearranged itinerary.
The gap between day and night is 7.4°F, and a low of 75.2°F is warmer than a July night in most of the United States. Wind off the water on the cliffs still takes the edge off after dark, so one long-sleeve layer earns its place in the bag and a rain shell mostly does not. Our packing list covers the rest of the case.
Light is the real December constraint. On December 15 the sun rises at 6:36 am Jamaica time and sets at 5:41 pm, for 11 hours 05 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org). Sunset is dinner’s starting gun rather than its dessert, and any drive back from farther along the coast happens in the dark, which our driving guide argues against for first-timers.
Can you swim in Negril in December? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Negril averages 84.3°F in December, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read the fine print on that number: it is a mean of daily maxima, so it describes the warmest reading of each day and sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. The 7 am swim before breakfast is a touch cooler than 84.3°F. Nobody will notice the difference with a towel in hand.
At that temperature the water is warmer than the air’s 82.6°F average high, which is why getting out is the uncomfortable part and nobody in Negril owns a wetsuit in December. Children stay in until they are called. Snorkel sessions run as long as your interest does rather than as long as your skin allows, and an afternoon float needs no acclimatization ritual at the shoreline.
On wind and swell we have to stop short: our sources carry no wave-height or wind series for the Negril coast in December, so we quote no figure and make no promise about flat water. What we can date is the season. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center puts the Atlantic season at June 1 to November 30, peaking September 10, and December falls outside it entirely (more in our hurricane-season page).
How busy is Negril in December? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate index for Negril, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. What the calendar plainly supports is a split: December behaves as two different months at a front desk. The first two weeks belong to travelers who chose their dates freely, and the Christmas to New Year stretch belongs to families locked to school holidays and to Jamaicans coming home.
That split sets your booking clock. For holiday-week dates, have the room and the flights held before Thanksgiving weekend rather than after it, since the same seats and the same beds serve both crowds. Most Negril trips route through Montego Bay, so settle the ride at the same time using our transfer guide, and check the flight options from the US before you fix the dates. Ground conditions can differ from a 30-year normal, and our recovery page tracks that.
On taxes we give no percentage: we could not verify Jamaica’s current accommodation levy or the tax line applied to a Negril room in December, so no rate appears anywhere here. Treat the price you see online as an incomplete figure, ask the property what it adds at checkout, and budget the gap. Our trip-cost page handles the broader math for a week on the island.
One upgrade genuinely changes this month rather than any other: a west-facing room, or a room actually on the sand. With the sun down at 5:41 pm, the best hour of a December day happens between five and six, and a balcony pointed the right way turns that hour into something you do not have to walk anywhere for. Spend there before spending on square footage.
Things to do in Negril in December

December is the month you can book the boat, the reef and the cliff afternoon on the same trip and expect all three to happen. With 1.7 wet days against November’s 4.4, and with the hurricane season closed since November 30, a plan made in October for a December week rarely needs a fallback. That is not a claim about luck. It is the difference between 0.90 inch of rain and 2.02.
The geography is short and linear. Seven Mile Beach runs north from the roundabout, with Bloody Bay at its quieter far end and Long Bay Beach Park as the public access point between them. South and west, West End Road traces the limestone cliffs, where the swimming is off ladders and platforms rather than sand. All of it shares the same 84.3°F water.
The sea barely notices the calendar: 86.3°F in November, 84.3°F in December, 82.7°F in January, a band of 3.6°F across a quarter of the year. The sky does the moving. Rainfall falls from 2.02 inches to 0.90, and wet days from 4.4 to 1.7, so what December changes at these places is not how the water feels but how many hours you get to spend in it.
The free part of the month is the light. Sunset from the West End costs nothing and lands at 5:41 pm mid-December, early enough that you can swim, shower and still be in position. Whether individual cliff bars ask for a cover charge in December is something we could not verify, so plan on buying a drink and count the view as included.
Negril in December: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs with the light. Be on Seven Mile Beach for the 6:36 am sunrise while the air is still near its 75.2°F overnight low, which is the one hour of a Negril day when walking a long beach is effortless work. Swim by nine, when the water is already at its daily maximum band around 84.3°F. Take the middle of the day under shade, because 82.6°F in full sun is a different number. Move to the cliffs by five, and let dinner start after 5:41 pm.
Day two takes the boat out, reef or sunset cruise, and keeps the return inside daylight rather than gambling on a 6 pm dock in the dark. If the weather turns, it will most likely turn for part of a day and drop around half an inch, so shift the water plan to the afternoon and spend the morning inland. For ideas that survive a shower, the island-wide list is the place to look rather than this page.
Negril in December vs November and January
| Measure | November | December | January |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 83.3°F | 82.6°F | 82.0°F |
| Average low | 76.6°F | 75.2°F | 73.9°F |
| Precipitation | 2.02 in | 0.90 in | 0.63 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.4 | 1.7 | 1.4 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 86.3°F | 84.3°F | 82.7°F |
| Hurricane season | Open until Nov 30 | Closed | Closed |
Across the three months the air moves 1.3°F at the top and 2.7°F at the bottom, which is nothing you would pack differently for. Rain is where the ranking happens: 2.02 inches and 4.4 wet days in November, 0.90 inch and 1.7 days in December, 0.63 inch and 1.4 days in January. The sea cools steadily through the same stretch, from 86.3°F to 84.3°F to 82.7°F, all three figures being means of daily maxima from the same marine record.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy 2.0°F more sea and warmer nights, at the cost of more than twice the rain and a hurricane season still officially open until November 30 (our November page works through that trade). Shift four weeks later and you keep the dry weather, lose 1.6°F of sea and 1.3°F of night warmth, and land in the deep of winter demand (January, in full).
Is December a good time to visit Negril?
Yes for anyone whose trip is built around water and who can travel in the first two weeks: warm sea, almost no rain, no storm watch, and a short flight from the East Coast. No for travelers whose dates are locked to the Christmas holidays and whose budget is tight, because that is the same week every family on the eastern seaboard has circled, and we have no rate data that would let us tell you how much it costs.
If the answer is no, January is the straightforward alternative: 0.63 inch of rain across 1.4 wet days, the driest of these three months, with a sea still at 82.7°F. The traveler chasing the warmest possible water should look the other way instead, toward November’s 86.3°F, and accept 4.4 wet days and a season that has not formally closed until the month’s last day.
Of the three months on this comparison, December is the only one that pairs an 84.3°F sea with under an inch of rain.
The last word
Pick your fortnight before you pick your hotel: the first half of December and the holiday weeks are two different trips at the same latitude, and only one of them lets you book late. Then take the weather seriously in one respect only. An average December records 0.1 day with an inch or more of rain, which is another way of saying the genuine soaking turns up about one December in ten. Bring the light layer for the cliffs and leave the raincoat home.
