NEGRIL · APRIL · 18.27° N
April in Negril averages 1.33 inches of rain, three days wet enough to measure, a daytime high of 84.7°F and a sea sitting at 84.7°F at its afternoon peak. May, four weeks later, takes 3.92 inches over 10.3 wet days.
Four weeks in either direction changes the week you get. March runs drier, at 0.95 inch, with water 2.1 degrees cooler. May keeps the warmth and adds 7.3 wet days. An April trip also escapes the Atlantic hurricane season completely, since NOAA’s season does not open until June 1.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · NEGRIL · APRIL
April pairs an 84.7°F sea with only three wet days, the last time that combination holds before May’s rain arrives.
DRY MONTH · SEA 84.7°F · 3 WET DAYS · OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: all-day water plans that hold, a 6:31 pm sunset over the West End cliffs, and a month whose rain total stays under an inch and a half.
Think twice before: booking on price logic. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Negril, so we rank no month cheap or expensive.

Every figure here is dated and sourced. The climate numbers are ERA5 reanalysis for the grid cell over Negril rather than airport station readings, the sea temperature is a 2015-2024 average of daily maxima, and the storm dates are NOAA’s. Questions that are not about the date, where to sleep or how to get west from Montego Bay, are answered by where to stay in Jamaica and the airport transfer guide.
Negril weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days

The normals below come from ECMWF’s ERA5 reanalysis through Open-Meteo, averaged over 1991-2020 for the grid cell at 18.2683° N, 78.3475° W. That distinction is worth keeping in mind: it is a model’s reconstruction of the atmosphere over a square of coast, not a thermometer at an airport, and a station reading can sit a degree or two either side of it. Within those limits, an average April in Negril runs a high of 84.7°F, a low of 75.5°F and 1.33 inches of rain for the month.
Three days in an average April collect at least 0.10 inch of rain, and not one day in the 30-year average reaches a full inch. Across a seven-night stay that works out to under one wet day, and the wet day tends to be an hour under a bar roof rather than a lost afternoon. The same dataset gives May 10.3 days at 0.10 inch or more, and 3.92 inches in total.
The gap between the 84.7°F high and the 75.5°F low is 9.2 degrees, which is narrow enough that nothing you pack is for warmth outdoors. One light layer covers the boat ride home and restaurants that run the air conditioning hard, and that is the entire cold-weather kit. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest of the bag.
On April 15 the sun rises at 5:55 am and sets at 6:31 pm local time, for 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org, converted from 10:55 and 23:31 UTC). Jamaica holds UTC−5 all year and never moves its clocks, so through April the island runs an hour behind US East Coast time. A 6:31 pm sunset leaves room for a cliff-top drink and a dinner table afterward.
Can you swim in Negril in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The water off Negril averages 84.7°F in April, from the Open-Meteo Marine record over 2015-2024. Read the basis carefully: that figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. Early-morning water is a touch cooler than the number suggests and afternoon water lands right on it. The coincidence is tidy, since the sea’s daily peak and the air’s average high are the same 84.7°F.
At that temperature nobody needs a wetsuit and nobody gasps on entry. A snorkel session runs an hour without a shiver, children stay in until they are told to come out, and a swim after the 6:31 pm sunset still feels warm, because the water sheds its heat more slowly than the air does.
We found no monthly wind or wave series for the Negril coast, so no figure for either appears here. What the record does support is the calendar. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (NOAA National Hurricane Center), and April sits outside it, which takes named-storm disruption off an April booking entirely. Our hurricane season guide covers the months where the question does apply.
How busy is Negril in April? Crowds, booking lead time and taxes
Prices first, with our cards on the table: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Negril, so we crown no month expensive and no month a bargain. The calendar facts we can stand behind are that April carries 1.33 inches of rain and no named-storm risk. What that combination does to room rates in any given year, we cannot show you with data.
Flights are the piece with real consequences for an April trip. Most arrivals land at Montego Bay and continue west by road, a leg our transfer guide prices and times. Book the seat before the room: six to eight weeks of lead time is our working estimate (est.) rather than a measured figure, and flights from the US has the route detail for the East Coast gateways.
We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax rate, so no percentage appears here. Ask the property for the all-in nightly total in writing before you pay a deposit, and treat any figure quoted elsewhere as something to check against your own confirmation. Our Jamaica trip cost page carries the week-level budget.
One line item changes an April week more than any other, and it is which side of West End Road or the beach strip your room sits on. The month’s assets are water at 84.7°F and a 6:31 pm sunset, and both pay out twice a day from a property with its own sand, once a day from a cheaper room a walk inland. Where that sand is and what it costs belongs to where to stay in Jamaica.
Things to do in Negril in April

April permits what May does not: a full-day boat trip or an all-day beach plan booked in advance, with 3.0 wet days on the month against the 10.3 the same dataset gives May. Nothing in an average April reaches a full inch of rain, so the outing that gets canceled outright is the rare case rather than the expected one.
The names to know split the town in two. Seven Mile Beach holds the sand side, with the swimming entries and the day-boat departures. West End Road carries the cliffs to the south and ends at the Negril Lighthouse, while the Royal Palm Reserve sits inland on the Great Morass. We could not verify current admission or opening hours for the lighthouse or the reserve, so we quote neither, and a call the day before is worth making if you plan an afternoon around either.
The water barely registers the calendar: 82.6°F in March, 84.7 in April, 86.2 in May, a swing of 3.6 degrees across a quarter of the year. The sky does the moving instead. Rain goes from 0.95 inch in March to 1.33 in April to 3.92 in May, and the wet-day count more than triples between April and May, from 3.0 to 10.3. Jamaica’s wider list reaches well beyond Negril if you want a day out of town.
April hands you 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight on the 15th, with the sun over the water at 6:31 pm and no ticket attached to the view from the sand or the cliff road. We found no admission schedule for Negril’s public beach access points, so we list no free-and-paid split. Sunset itself needs no reservation from either side of town.
Negril in April: a two-day itinerary
Sunrise at 5:55 am puts the north end of Seven Mile Beach in flat light and near-empty sand for an hour. Breakfast by 8, first swim before 10, then shade from roughly 11 to 3 under an 84.7°F average high. The afternoon swim is the better one, since the 84.7°F sea figure is a daily maximum and the water is at its warmest late. Move to West End Road by 5, which puts you on the cliffs with an hour of light before the 6:31 pm sunset.
Day two goes offshore. Boats leave from the beach side in the morning and an April forecast holds well enough to book one the day before. Keep the afternoon loose for the lighthouse end of West End Road. If the sky turns, the odds favor a squall over a washout, with three wet days in the month and none averaging a full inch. Indoor backups are thin in Negril, so keep the boat on day two and leave any third day as the spare.
Negril in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 83.3°F | 84.7°F | 85.0°F |
| Average low | 74.0°F | 75.5°F | 76.9°F |
| Rainfall | 0.95 in | 1.33 in | 3.92 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 1.9 | 3.0 | 10.3 |
| Sea surface, daily maximum | 82.6°F | 84.7°F | 86.2°F |
April’s high of 84.7°F sits 1.4 degrees above March and 0.3 below May, so on temperature alone the three months are one month. Rain separates them. March takes 0.95 inch over 1.9 wet days, April 1.33 inches over 3.0, May 3.92 inches over 10.3. The sea climbs steadily across the trio, 82.6 to 84.7 to 86.2°F, all on the same daily-maximum basis.
Move the trip to March and you gain 1.1 fewer wet days and lose 2.1 degrees of sea warmth. Move it to May and you gain 1.5 degrees of water and inherit 7.3 more wet days plus 2.59 inches of extra rain. Our Negril in March page runs the earlier trade in detail, and the 12-month verdict for Jamaica sets all three against the rest of the year.
Is April a good time to visit Negril?
Yes for anyone whose week is built around water and outdoor hours. An 84.7°F sea, 3.0 wet days, 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight and zero hurricane-season exposure is as clean a set of conditions as the months on either side offer. No if you need us to promise a low-season price, because we cannot show you a rate series for any Negril month and will not invent one.
If rain is the deciding factor, March is the drier booking at 0.95 inch and 1.9 wet days, and the cost is water at 82.6°F. If the warmest possible sea is what you are after, May’s 86.2°F is the peak of the three, and the bill comes to 10.3 wet days and 3.92 inches.
Of the three months, April is the only one that pairs a sea above 84°F with fewer than five wet days.
The last word
Book April for the water and stop optimizing around half a degree. The sea reads 84.7°F, the rain totals 1.33 inches spread over three days, and the sun works a 12-hour-36-minute shift. One fact we have kept back: the season April escapes peaks on September 10, with most Atlantic activity falling between mid-August and mid-October, so the identical beach week in September carries a risk this month does not have at all. If Negril is still competing with another base, Negril vs Ocho Rios settles that part.
