Negril in May: Weather, Sea Temperature and How It Compares to April and June

May puts 3.92 inches of rain on Negril and 10.3 days that record at least a tenth of an inch, more of each than April or June. It also holds the sea at 86.2°F and keeps the sun up for thirteen hours. Those two facts do not cancel out, and the week you get depends on which one you booked around.

The month also sits in a gap on the calendar. Winter’s high season is behind it, and the Atlantic hurricane season does not open until June 1, per the NOAA National Hurricane Center. For a beach week on Seven Mile Beach or the West End cliffs that pairing is rare. For anyone counting on cloudless afternoons, April did the job better, by a margin we can put numbers on below.

May buys warm water and a calendar still clear of the hurricane season, and it charges for both in rain days.

Every figure here comes from one of three places: ERA5 reanalysis for the grid cell centered on 18.27° N, 78.35° W for air and rain, Open-Meteo’s marine series for the sea, and sunrise-sunset.org for the light. None of it is a thermometer standing in Negril. Where a number could not be verified at all, we say that instead of rounding something plausible into the gap.

Negril weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

The 1991-2020 average May day tops out at 85.0°F and drops to 76.9°F overnight, with 3.92 inches of rain across the month. Those normals come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, a model reconstruction of a grid cell rather than a log kept at an airfield. A reanalysis flattens a coastline into one square of ocean and land, so 85.0°F describes the shape of the month, not a reading you could have taken yourself at the waterline.

An average May records 10.3 days with at least 0.10 inch of rain. Call it wet weather one day in three, averaging close to four tenths of an inch on each of those days. We found no hourly breakdown for Negril, so we cannot tell you whether the rain favors four in the afternoon or three in the morning. Pack for a wet interval rather than a wet week, and keep the shell in the beach bag instead of the room.

Only 8.1°F separates the average high from the average low, so nothing cools down after dark: a 76.9°F night is warmer than most American bedrooms in July. Nothing in the suitcase needs to be warm. It needs a rain layer light enough to fold into a pocket and a second shirt for the day the first one refuses to dry, as our packing guide works through in detail.

On May 15 the sun rises at 5:38 a.m. and sets at 6:40 p.m. local time, 13 hours and 2 minutes apart, with Jamaica holding UTC-5 all year and never shifting for daylight saving. Tropical dusk is short: usable light after the sun touches the water runs nearer twenty-five minutes than an hour (est.). Any dinner sold on the view should be seated by 6:15.

Can you swim in Negril in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Negril averages 86.2°F in May across the 2015-2024 marine record. Read that figure with its definition attached: it is the mean of daily maximum values, not an average over the full 24 hours, so it sits a shade above what an early swimmer meets at 6 a.m. Other tables that average around the clock will show a slightly cooler number for the same water.

In practice there is nothing to brace against. The water runs 9.3°F above the average night low, so entry is instant, a snorkel session ends when you get bored or burned rather than cold, and children stay in longer than their parents want to stand in the sun. No one is thinking about a wetsuit at that temperature, and float time becomes the default midday activity.

We looked for a wave-height and wind series for the water off Negril in May and found none we could stand behind, so no numbers on swell appear here. What the marine record does show is how little the sea moves: 84.7°F in April, 86.2°F in May, 86.3°F in June. Surface temperature is not the variable that separates these three months.

How busy is Negril in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

May lands after the winter season and before June 1, the date NOAA opens the Atlantic hurricane season, with the statistical peak falling on September 10. That is a calendar position and nothing more. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Negril, so we crown no month the cheapest and none the most expensive, and any page that does so without a series is guessing.

Without rate data we will not hand you a booking window measured in weeks. Two pieces of the trip are worth settling early regardless. Most US routes land at Montego Bay rather than Negril, so the flight and the ground transfer decide your first afternoon: the flights guide covers the routes and the transfer guide covers the options and their trade-offs. Nights on the ground are the unit worth arguing over, not miles.

We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax rate or how it is applied to a nightly bill, so no percentage appears. Ask any property to quote the all-in nightly total, taxes and service charge included, before you prepay, and compare that figure rather than the headline rate. Our know-before-you-go page handles currency and payment habits, and the trip-cost page holds the budget tiers.

One upgrade earns its money in May specifically: air conditioning rather than a ceiling fan. With nights averaging 76.9°F and the humidity that arrives with 3.92 inches of rain, the room you sleep in matters more this month than it did in April, when the total was 1.33 inches across 3.0 wet days. A covered terrace is the second one, since it decides what the ten wet afternoons feel like.

Things to do in Negril in May

May is the last full month before the hurricane season opens on June 1 and stays open until November 30. A catamaran day or a reef trip booked for the third week of May carries a weather risk that amounts to rain, not to a storm track and a refund argument. Our hurricane-season page has the month-by-month risk once June arrives.

Negril’s two halves ask for different days. Seven Mile Beach runs flat and shallow, with Bloody Bay at its northern end; the West End cliffs give deep water straight off the rock and the sunset side of town. We could not verify current entry fees or opening hours for Negril’s paid attractions, so none are quoted here. The Jamaica things-to-do guide carries the wider list, and the Negril and Ocho Rios comparison settles whether the waterfall day belongs on this trip at all.

What May changes at those places is the sky, not the water. The sea reads 84.7°F in April and 86.2°F in May, a difference nobody feels. Wet days go from 3.0 to 10.3 over the same four weeks. A cliff afternoon in May is an April afternoon until the cloud builds, and in May it builds roughly three times as often.

The free hour is the one before 6:40 p.m., spent walking the cliff path on the west side while the light goes. We could not verify which accesses along Seven Mile Beach charge and which do not, so we name none of them as free and suggest you ask at the property before walking twenty minutes to a gate.

Negril in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs off the sunrise. Light arrives at 5:38 a.m., so the beach is walkable and empty by 6:30 and the first swim happens before breakfast in water at 86.2°F. Take the boat trip or the long snorkel between 8 and 11, then go inside for the middle of the day, when the 85.0°F high and the humidity do their worst. Back out at 4 p.m., over to the West End by 5:30, in position well before the 6:40 p.m. sunset.

Day two inverts it: the beach in the morning, a drive or a market run in the afternoon, dinner on the water. If the sky closes in, and one day in three records measurable rain, shift the boat to day two and keep the flexible plan for whichever morning looks clear. Showers here tend to pass rather than settle, so an hour under cover usually costs you an hour, not a day.

Across the three months the temperature barely argues: 84.7°F, 85.0°F and 86.0°F for the daytime high, with nights climbing 2.8°F from April to June. Rain does the real separating. April takes 1.33 inches over 3.0 wet days, May nearly triples both to 3.92 inches over 10.3 days, and June pulls back to 2.80 inches over 7.7 days. The sea rises 1.6°F from April to June and then stops.

Shift four weeks earlier and you trade 1.5°F of sea warmth for seven fewer wet days, which is the cleanest exchange on the table. Shift four weeks later and the water holds at 86.3°F, the rain eases to 7.7 days, and you pick up the hurricane season from June 1 along with warmer, stickier nights at 78.3°F. April in Negril has that month in full, and the country-wide calendar takes the long view.

Is May a good time to visit Negril?

Yes for swimmers, boat people and anyone who wants the water at 86.2°F without a storm-tracking app on the phone. Yes for travelers who can absorb a wet hour without rewriting the day. No for a short trip sold on unbroken sun: 10.3 wet days out of 31 means a three-night stay has a real chance of losing an afternoon, and a photographer booking around light should look elsewhere on the calendar.

If the answer is no, April is the month to take. It gives 1.33 inches of rain across 3.0 wet days for a sea that is only 1.5°F cooler and a daytime high 0.3°F lower, which is the same beach holiday with a quarter of the cloud. That is the one substitution the numbers support outright.

Among these three months, May is the only one that puts an 86.2°F sea and a calendar clear of the hurricane season in the same booking.

The last word

Book May if the water is the point and treat the rain as the price of it. One number we have held back makes the case: of those 10.3 wet days, an average May delivers just 0.4 days with an inch or more, so the genuine washout that kills a boat morning shows up in roughly two Mays out of five. The rest is a shower, a covered terrace, and a beach that is warm again forty minutes later. Pick the room with the air conditioning and the roof over the chairs, and the month does the rest.
