Montego Bay in October: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Hurricane Season

An average October in Montego Bay runs 84.7°F by day and 75.4°F at night, and drops 7.28 inches of rain across 18.4 days that record at least a tenth of an inch. The sea off the bay averages 88.2°F. Those four numbers decide most of what an October vacation here looks like, from what goes in the bag to whether the two-day itinerary needs an indoor version.

What the month takes away is certainty. October sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season and inside the weeks NOAA counts as its most active, so the flight and the room want a refundable rate more than they want a bargain. What it gives back is water at bath temperature, a Rose Hall night tour that begins after dark, and a river raft that runs every day of the month.

Go for: swimming without a wince, Rose Hall’s US$35 night tour running 18:30 to 20:30 in full dark, and rafting the Martha Brae on a river open daily, 09:00 to 16:00.

Think twice before: paying for a non-refundable week or a single fixed boat day, because October falls in the mid-August to mid-October stretch NOAA marks as the season’s busiest.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, per the National Hurricane Center. October sits at the tail of that window, which matters more to the booking than the rain total does. We keep a separate guide to the season month by month, and a page on the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.

The normals below come from ERA5, the ECMWF reanalysis served by Open-Meteo, computed over 1991-2020 for the grid cell at 18.4762° N, 77.8939° W. That is a model’s best estimate for a square of the map, not a thermometer reading at Sangster International, and we name it because the two do not always agree. Read that way, October averages a high of 84.7°F, a low of 75.4°F and 7.28 inches of rain.

Of those 7.28 inches, 18.4 days record a tenth of an inch or more, so roughly three days in five come with measurable rain. Only 0.7 of a day reaches a full inch, meaning an inch-plus soaking turns up in about seven Octobers out of ten and the rest of the wet is showers that pass. Plan the outdoor half of a day for the morning and keep the afternoon movable.

The spread between high and low is 9.3°F, which is small enough that evening brings no real cooling. Pack for warm nights and cold interiors instead: a light long sleeve for restaurant air conditioning and boat spray, a rain shell that folds into a daypack, and shoes you can get wet. Our packing list carries the full kit.

October 15 gets 11 hours 45 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 6:04 am and sunset at 5:49 pm island time. Light is the real constraint on an itinerary here. The last easy swim is around five, the drive back from Falmouth or Anchovy happens in the dark after six, and dinner is a night-time meal well before seven.

Can you swim in Montego Bay in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like

88.2°F is the October average for the sea surface off Montego Bay in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015 to 2024, and the way that figure is built matters. It is the mean of daily maxima, not a mean across 24 hours, so it reads a shade warmer than tables assembled the other way. Take 88.2°F as the afternoon number and expect the water just after sunrise to sit a little under it.

Nobody wades in slowly at that temperature. Entry is instant, an hour in the water costs nothing in body heat, and the surprise runs the other way: the sea is 12.8°F warmer than the month’s average overnight low of 75.4°F, so the water is the warm part of a 7 am swim. Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard charges US$8 for visitors aged 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12, with customer service open 08:30 to 17:30, Monday to Sunday.

Wind and swell we cannot give you. No monthly wind or wave series for the bay was readable at source for us, so no figures appear here. What is dated is the storm calendar: NOAA puts the Atlantic season at June 1 to November 30, with the busiest run from mid-August to mid-October. If an offshore day matters to the trip, build a spare afternoon around it.

How busy is Montego Bay in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we crown no month cheapest and none expensive. What the calendar states is that October is the last full month inside the season’s most active stretch, and that it ends six weeks before the winter holiday weeks begin. Anything beyond that would be a twelve-month ranking we cannot support. The lines we could verify sit in our Jamaica trip cost guide.

That pushes the booking decision onto the cancellation clause rather than onto a count of weeks: no booking-window figure for this month was verifiable for us, so we give none. Read the refund line on the room and the change fee on the fare before you read the rate. Arriving passengers also pay a fee on trips originating abroad, announced at US$20 with effect from August 1, 2012, an amount we could not reconfirm on a current government page. Flights are covered in our US flights guide.

Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per night on each occupied room and scaled to the size of the property rather than to the traveler: US$1 at a property of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 from 51 to 100, US$4 at 101 rooms and above, per Tax Administration Jamaica. Complimentary rooms attract it too. Against what European cities charge per person per night, it is a rounding error on the bill.

Paying more changes exactly one thing in October: the ability to move. A refundable room and a changeable fare are the only upgrades that buy back what the month can take away, and they are worth more than a sea view. At the airport, the fixed point is the Authorized Airport Taxi desk shared by JUTA and JCAL just outside the Customs exit, the only two companies authorized at Sangster International. The airport publishes no fare table, so the rate is the one quoted at that desk, as our transfer guide sets out.

Things to do in Montego Bay in October: Doctor’s Cave, Rose Hall and the Martha Brae

Rafting the Martha Brae · about 75 minutes over three miles · Illustration

October keeps September’s water and hands back some of its sky: 88.2°F against 88.7, but 18.4 wet days against 21.0 and 7.28 inches against 8.07. The month also delivers early dark. With the sun down at 5:49 pm, the Haunted Night Tour at Rose Hall Great House, 18:30 to 20:30 Wednesday to Saturday, runs entirely after nightfall from its first minute.

The three anchors, with what each publishes. Doctor’s Cave Beach, Jimmy Cliff Boulevard: US$8 for ages 12 and over, US$4 under 12, service desk 08:30 to 17:30, seven days. Rose Hall Great House: Day and Garden Tour at US$30 per adult, Monday to Saturday 09:15 to 16:00, Haunted Night Tour at US$35, each running about 45 minutes to an hour. Rafting the Martha Brae: US$99 for visitors and J$13,000 for Jamaicans with valid local ID, roughly an hour and a quarter over three miles, open every day including public holidays, 09:00 to 16:00, all major cards taken, guests processed in order of arrival.

Two of the three move with the month. The raft operator quotes its ride time as depending on the state of the water, and October’s 7.28 inches is what sets that state, so the same three miles are not the same trip as in a dry month. At the beach the gap is between sea and air, 88.2°F water against a 75.4°F average overnight low. Rose Hall’s 45 to 60 minutes under a roof changes not at all, which is what makes it the wet-afternoon card.

On free admission we came up empty: no free-entry day and no dated October event in Montego Bay was verifiable for us, so we name none. Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle, publishes no price we could read at source, and three resellers quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket. We pass on all three. Bring cash and ask at the gate. Wider options sit in things to do in Jamaica.

Montego Bay in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts in the water. Doctor’s Cave opens its desk at 08:30 and asks US$8, and a sea at 88.2°F needs no warming up, so an hour before ten beats an hour after two. Drive east to Rose Hall for the Day and Garden Tour, US$30, running 09:15 to 16:00, and allow an hour. Sunset lands at 5:49 pm, which puts dinner in full dark. Wednesday through Saturday, the 18:30 night tour at US$35 takes the evening.

Day two goes inland to the Martha Brae, 09:00 to 16:00 daily, US$99 for visitors, about 75 minutes on three miles of river, guests taken in order of arrival, so reserving buys no place in line. Arrive early. Anchovy and Rocklands fill the afternoon, cash in hand, and Falmouth’s Luminous Lagoon is the night option on that side. If the rain turns out to be the inch-plus kind that shows up in seven Octobers out of ten, take Rose Hall indoors and raft the next morning instead.

Montego Bay in October vs September and November

Measure September October November
Average high 86.4°F 84.7°F 82.4°F
Average low 76.3°F 75.4°F 74.0°F
Precipitation 8.07 in 7.28 in 3.55 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 21.0 18.4 9.1
Sea surface (daily maxima) 88.7°F 88.2°F 85.1°F

September and October are nearly the same month in the water and clearly different on land. September averages 86.4°F by day with 8.07 inches over 21.0 wet days, October 84.7°F with 7.28 inches over 18.4, and the sea slips from 88.7°F to 88.2. November is where the break comes: 3.55 inches, 9.1 wet days, a high of 82.4°F and a sea of 85.1°F. Rain drops by more than half and the wet days halve.

Shift four weeks later and you trade 3.1°F of water and 2.3°F of afternoon air for nine fewer wet days. Shift four weeks earlier and you gain half a degree of sea while putting September 10, the season’s peak date, inside your travel dates. At 85.1°F, November is still swimming for almost anyone, so the water loss costs less than the number suggests. A trip built around one boat day, one wedding or one non-refundable week reads better in November.

Is October a good time to visit Montego Bay?

Yes, if the water is the point and the dates can move. October delivers an 88.2°F sea, 84.7°F afternoons and a rain pattern that is mostly showers, with an inch-plus day in about seven Octobers out of ten. No, if the booking is non-refundable, the dates are locked, or the whole trip hangs on one offshore excursion, because the month sits inside the stretch NOAA marks as the season’s most active.

When that second description fits, take November instead. Rain falls to 3.55 inches over 9.1 wet days, the sea holds 85.1°F, afternoons run 82.4°F, and the dates land past mid-October, outside the busiest run though still inside a season that closes on November 30. All twelve months are weighed in the best time to visit Jamaica, and Montego Bay against Negril settles the other half of the question.

What October alone gives: water within half a degree of September’s on two and a half fewer wet days, plus a 5:49 pm sunset that puts the Rose Hall night tour in genuine dark from the moment it starts.

The last word

Book the room refundable, keep day two swappable, and October in Montego Bay behaves. One thing to carry out of the airport: the Transport Authority identifies a licensed public passenger vehicle by five marks, a red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi, route details printed on the front doors of a route taxi, a checked color code 10 cm high in 2.5 cm squares, black and white for route taxis and black and yellow for hackney carriages, and a driver wearing a Transport Authority badge with the Driver Identification Card in the vehicle. We could not confirm any letter prefix on the plate, so do not make the number your only test.
