Things to Do in the Everglades: Shark Valley, Anhinga Trail and the Gulf Coast

Everglades National Park has no single gate with one parking lot and one loop behind it. The National Park Service directions page, checked Sep 18, 2026, lists three road entrances: Homestead in the southeast, Shark Valley on the Tamiami Trail west of Miami, and Gulf Coast at Everglades City on the far side of the peninsula. Each is reached by its own highway, and the Flamingo area sits at the end of the Main Park Road past Homestead. Choosing among them is the first real decision of the trip, and it is a decision about driving as much as about scenery.

Money is where the published record thins out. The NPS hours page notes separate fees for boat tours and for canoe and kayak rentals at Gulf Coast without naming amounts, and no entrance fee appeared on either page checked on that date. So confirm the current fee with the park before you drive, and treat any dollar figure you saw elsewhere as unconfirmed. What the Park Service does publish holds steady: two seasons, visitor center hours, road distances and one speed limit.

Four visitor centers cover those entrances, and knowing which one you are aiming at saves an hour of confusion at the wheel. Ernest F. Coe stands at the Homestead side, Guy Bradley waits at Flamingo at the end of the Main Park Road, Shark Valley has its own on U.S. 41, and Gulf Coast serves Everglades City. They are the places to ask about program times and current conditions, since neither of those travels well in print.

Everglades National Park entrances: Homestead, Shark Valley, Gulf Coast

The Park Service names three road entrances, and they are not variations on one arrival. Homestead opens the Main Park Road, which runs southwest to Flamingo and Florida Bay. Shark Valley sits on the Tamiami Trail, U.S. 41, between Miami and Naples. Gulf Coast, at Everglades City, faces salt water and the Ten Thousand Islands. Trying to combine two of them in one day means spending most of it on highways, which is why the main park guide treats each entrance as a separate outing.

Shark Valley: the tram road and the observation tower

Shark Valley’s two named features are its loop road, used by the concession tram, and the observation tower at the far end of it. The NPS hours and directions pages checked on September 18, 2026 carry the seasons, the center hours and the road distances, but no tram fare and no departure times, so the Shark Valley Visitor Center is the place to settle both. Nothing about the marsh comes with a guarantee either: the Park Service describes habitat, not sightings.

Distances make this the easiest entrance to reach from either coast. The Park Service puts Shark Valley about 25 miles west of Miami and about 70 miles east of Naples, all of it on U.S. 41. A half day is the right unit here. Fifty miles of round trip from Miami, the loop out to the tower and back, one stop at the visitor center, and the morning is gone. The loop’s mileage is not on the directions page, so ask before you decide between walking it and riding the tram, especially if you arrive after the 8:00 AM dry-season opening with lunch plans back in the city.

The Homestead entrance: Anhinga Trail and the road to Flamingo

From the Homestead gate, the Main Park Road carries a speed limit of 45 to 55 mph and has narrow shoulders, per the NPS directions page. That combination rules out casual roadside stops: pull off only where a marked lot or pullout exists, and keep the camera in the car until you have parked. The Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center opens at 8:00 AM in the dry season, and the Anhinga Trail boardwalk is the first stop most drivers make after it.

The road ends at Flamingo and the Guy Bradley Visitor Center, and the mileage between the two is not published on the directions page, so plan around the round trip rather than a number. At 45 to 55 mph with stops at boardwalks along the way, an Anhinga-plus-Flamingo day needs an early start and a full tank in Homestead. The Gulf Coast at Everglades City: boats, canoes and the Ten Thousand Islands

Gulf Coast is the one area the Park Service lists as open 24 hours a day, which is what makes a first-light or after-dark launch possible at all. The same hours page notes separate fees for boat tours and for canoe and kayak rentals without printing amounts, so ask the operator and the visitor center for current prices rather than budgeting from a figure found online.

Access is straightforward from the interstate: I-75 exit 80, then 20 miles south on State Road 29 into Everglades City. That is the whole route as the Park Service gives it, and those 20 miles are the reason this entrance suits travelers already on the Gulf side rather than day-trippers out of Miami.

What Everglades City adds is water you cannot see from any boardwalk. Homestead gives you a paved road and Shark Valley a loop, while the Ten Thousand Islands are reached by hull only, by tour boat or by rented canoe or kayak. The round-the-clock access also means the gate is never the thing that stops you, unlike the two eastern entrances.

When to visit the Everglades: season, hours and programs

The park runs on two seasons. The Wet Season covers April to October, when visitor centers generally open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Dry Season runs November to March, when they generally open daily at 8:00 AM and close at 5:00 PM. That extra hour in winter is worth having, and our month-by-month calendar takes the seasons apart week by week.

Ranger-led programs follow the same calendar. In the dry season they run at all park entrances; in the wet months the Park Service describes fewer of them. No start times appeared on the hours page checked Sep 18, 2026, so pick up the current schedule at whichever visitor center you reach first, or call ahead if a program is the reason for the drive.

Winter has one cost, and the Park Service states it plainly: on busy winter weekends the Homestead and Shark Valley entrances can become extremely congested, with long lines at the gates and parking that can be impossible to find. A February Saturday at either is the wrong shape for a relaxed morning. A weekday helps. So does Everglades City, open around the clock.

One reserve stands, and it is not a small one. The pages read for these notes on September 18, 2026 carry seasons, hours, distances, the 45 to 55 mph limit and the mention of separate boat and paddle fees, and they carry no entrance fee, no tour price and no program time.
