Everglades from Miami: Which Entrance, and How Long It Takes

Three roads run into Everglades National Park, and each one leaves Miami in a different direction. Shark Valley sits on U.S. 41, about 25 miles west of the city. The Homestead entrance opens the Main Park Road, the one that ends at Flamingo. The Gulf Coast entrance waits at Everglades City, off I-75 at exit 80 and then 20 miles south on State Road 29. Each is a separate drive out and back, so a day in the park means picking one of them.

The park runs on two seasons, and the visitor centers follow them. In the dry season, November through March, they generally open daily at 8:00 AM and close at 5:00 PM, with ranger-led programs at all park entrances. In the wet season, April through October, the usual hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and the program list thins out. Dry-season mornings bring company: the Park Service warns that on busy winter weekends the Homestead and Shark Valley entrances can become extremely congested, with long lines at the gates and parking that can be impossible to find.

The Park Service publishes mileage for these entrances rather than drive times, so estimated minutes are marked (est.). Four visitor centers serve the park: Ernest F. Coe, Guy Bradley at Flamingo, Shark Valley and Gulf Coast. And no entrance guarantees an animal sighting, in any season.

Which Everglades entrance to use from Miami

Shark Valley settles most Miami itineraries on distance alone: about 25 miles west of the city on U.S. 41, the Tamiami Trail that carries on past Big Cypress toward the Gulf. The same Park Service page puts Shark Valley about 70 miles east of Naples, roughly midway across the peninsula. The Homestead entrance asks for a drive south out of the metro before the Main Park Road even starts, and the Gulf Coast entrance at Everglades City is reached on a different interstate. One free morning points west. A full day, and Flamingo comes into range.

Shark Valley from Miami: 25 miles west on U.S. 41

Shark Valley sits 25 miles west of Miami on U.S. 41, which is 40 minutes each way without traffic (est.) and leaves the bulk of a morning inside the park. In the dry season the Shark Valley Visitor Center opens at 8:00 AM, so the gate is reachable at opening from a 7:00 AM departure (est.). The Shark Valley loop and a walk from the parking area fill the hours before the heat builds. By early afternoon you can be back in the city.

The Park Service attaches a blunt warning to this entrance, and it is seasonal: on busy winter weekends both Shark Valley and Homestead can become extremely congested, with long lines at the gates and parking that can be impossible to find. A Saturday in February is the sharpest version of that. The pages read on Sep 18, 2026 describe no timed-entry or reservation system for these gates, so arrival time is the lever you actually hold.

Aim for the gate at opening, 8:00 AM from November through March, which means leaving Brickell or Miami Beach closer to 7:00 (est.). April through October the opening moves to 9:00 AM and fewer ranger-led programs run, so the earlier start matters less. Weekdays step around the congestion the Park Service names, since the warning is specific to busy winter weekends. Homestead to Flamingo: Main Park Road drive time and day trip plan

From the Homestead entrance the Main Park Road runs down to Flamingo, and the Park Service flags two things about it: narrow shoulders, and a speed limit of 45 to 55 mph. At that limit the drive in is a commitment before a single stop, and the road ends at Flamingo rather than looping anywhere. Guy Bradley Visitor Center is the one at Flamingo, at the far end. The round trip plus stops is a day, and the 8:00 AM dry-season opening is worth using for it.

Combining Shark Valley with Homestead in one day looks reasonable on a map and does not hold up on the ground. They are reached on different highways, U.S. 41 heading west out of Miami and the roads south through Homestead, and the Main Park Road ends at Flamingo instead of bending north to the Tamiami Trail. Driving between the two means retracing most of the way back toward the metro. Two entrances are two outings, not one loop.

A full day on this side covers the boardwalk walking near the entrance, the Anhinga Trail included, and Flamingo at the end of the road. Dry-season visitors get ranger-led programs at all park entrances, which is why November to March is the season this stretch is built around. Everglades Gulf Coast from Miami: drive time and day trip options

Getting to Gulf Coast means I-75 to exit 80, then 20 miles south on State Road 29 into Everglades City. Out of Miami that puts the Alligator Alley crossing first, roughly two hours behind the wheel in each direction (est.), with those last 20 miles of two-lane road at the end of it. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center is one of the park’s four, on the opposite side of the peninsula from the Homestead gate.

Naples sits far closer to Everglades City than Miami does, and the Park Service measures Shark Valley at 25 miles west of Miami and 70 miles east of Naples, which shows how far across the entrance sits. A Gulf Coast day trip from Miami spends about four hours in the car (est.) to reach one visitor center area. Built into a west coast stay instead, it becomes a short local drive with the afternoon intact.

In exchange, the Gulf Coast area is open 24 hours a day, the only one of the three entrances without gate hours standing between you and the water. Boat tours run from Everglades City, and canoes and kayaks can be rented there, both carrying fees separate from park entry. This is the paddling and boating end of the park, and the mangrove waterways rather than a boardwalk are what the drive delivers.

Two kinds of traveler should make the turn anyway. Paddlers, who came for the rental counter and the launch, get more out of Everglades City than out of either eastern gate. And anyone already driving Miami to Naples passes exit 80 regardless, so the detour is 20 miles each way rather than a whole day. On a Florida road trip, the slower crossing on U.S. 41 past Big Cypress puts Shark Valley on the same line.

Everglades entrance fees and boat tour prices

Fee amounts, boat tour prices and program start times were not in the material read on Sep 18, 2026, which covered the entrances, the directions to each, the two seasons, visitor center hours and the 45 to 55 mph limit on the Main Park Road. Rather than round a half-remembered number into a fact, treat all three as open until you check. What the Park Service does state is the structure: boat tours and canoe and kayak rentals at Gulf Coast carry fees separate from park entry.

For gate fees and annual passes, the fees and passes section of the park’s own site, nps.gov/ever, is the number worth quoting, and an increase appears there before it appears anywhere else. For boat tours and paddling rentals, the concession operators at Everglades City and Flamingo publish their own rates, and the visitor centers answer the phone. Program schedules are posted by season, which matters most from November through March, when programs run at all park entrances.
