Syros Hotels: Where to Stay on the Cyclades’ Capital Island

Stay in Ermoupoli for a first visit or a trip without a car. If the sea matters as much as the streets, add a few nights in a beach village such as Galissas or Kini. Syros is compact, so the choice comes down to mood.

Where should you stay on Syros?

Syros sorts neatly into three moods: the neoclassical capital, the medieval village on the hill above it, and the beach towns along the west and south coasts. Driving from Ermoupoli across to the west coast beaches takes about 15 minutes, so a base that turns out to be wrong is easy to fix with a short ride.

Ermoupoli: the lively capital

Ermoupoli is the island's main town, the capital of the whole Cyclades, and home to the ferry port. Its old town climbs from the harbor in neoclassical mansions, pastel facades and marble-paved streets and stairs. Palm-shaded Miaouli Square sits at the center, ringed with shops and cafes. On summer evenings the waterfront tavernas spill onto the sidewalks and harbor promenade, and the whole town turns to eating and drinking.

The mood is lively without being loud, and it lasts all year, with cultural events and festivals long after beach season ends. Museums, theaters, cafes, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance. The town is built on a steep hill, though, and getting around means plenty of steps.

The island's widest choice of hotels is here. For luxury, look at Ploes, an oceanside mansion with hand-painted ceilings and marble bathrooms, or Argini, a former residence turned 11-room hotel. Apollonion Palace fills a 19th-century neoclassical building over the sea, with a terrace for dinner facing the water. 1901 Hermoupolis is a five-room boutique hotel in a residential corner of upper Ermoupoli, and Electra Syros Boutique Hotel sits a step from Asteria Beach. Naves Suites is a 3-minute walk from the ferry port, though it has no staffed reception desk.

If you rent a car, drive carefully in the center near Miaouli Square, where stairs, one-way streets and narrow pedestrian lanes call for attention.

Vaporia: the waterfront mansion quarter

An easy walk along the shore from Miaouli Square, Vaporia is where shipowners and bankers built their mansions, most of them now beautifully restored. Vaporia is an upscale neighborhood of Ermoupoli, and many of its hotels look straight out over the water. Locals swim at Asteria Beach, which is a concrete platform with umbrellas and a ladder down into the water. Nearby, the blue-domed church of Agios Nikolaos has a dazzling interior.

Aristide has nine lavish rooms and a contemporary art collection, though the rooms come without a mini fridge or coffee machine. Arion Syros has six rooms, all with ocean views, a 10-minute walk from Miaouli Square. Villa Selena, with six elegant rooms, is steps from the Asteria platform.

Ano Syros: the medieval hilltop

Above the capital, Ano Syros is the medieval settlement of the island's Catholic community, built around the fortified Cathedral Church of San Giorgio. Its maze of stone lanes, whitewashed houses and churches gathers around the fortified Cathedral of San Giorgio. The lanes are too narrow for cars, so you drive or take a taxi to the village entrance and walk in. Some of the tavernas have patios with distant views of the Aegean and down to Ermoupoli's port.

The village suits travelers who like to wander and get a little lost. Anyone who dislikes stairs should look elsewhere, because the paths are uneven and steep. Lodging runs to villas, apartments and guesthouses, with few hotels. Wind Tales is a small guesthouse with just a few rooms, some of them carved into the stone, and the Anemomylos Windmill makes for a truly unusual stay.

Outside high season Ano Syros empties out to a few locals. It is still a pleasant place to stay then, but expect shops and restaurants to be closed. Ermoupoli is a half-hour uphill walk away, or a few minutes by taxi.

Galissas: the family beach

Galissas has the longest beach on the island, with golden sand on a gradual slope that stays shallow a good way out. You can rent canoes, water cycles and SUPs, beach bars serve snacks and drinks, and the village eateries are less than five minutes away on foot. The setting feels relaxed and rural, with farms and white-and-blue Cycladic buildings on the hills. A tiny white church stands at one end of the beach, and just over the hill lies a pebbly, nudist-friendly cove.

Hotel Benois is a bright, modern hotel with a pool, set across a strip of green from the beach, a 2-minute walk away. Dolphin Bay cascades down the hillside above the bay, with a big pool terrace, waterslide, toddler pool and fenced playground. Galissas is about 5 miles (8 km) from Ermoupoli, and its nicer hotels fill quickly in high season, so book early.

Kini: sunsets and a small harbor

Kini sits in a cove about 5.6 miles (9 km) from Ermoupoli, with a little harbor on one side of the bay. Tavernas and cafes line the shore, some close enough to dip your toes in the sand, and evenings here mean seafood dinners and sunsets over the bay. It is more compact than Galissas, so it is worth checking availability early for your dates. Boat trips leave the harbor for the empty beaches of the north coast.

Oro Suites has ten modern suites by the beach, some with a private hot tub or plunge pool. Blue Harmony sits right across from the beach, with sun beds and drink service across the street.

Anemos and Almyra offers apartments with small kitchens and big balconies, and Sanctuary Villas is owned by the cat sanctuary God's Little People, a natural pick for cat lovers.

Finikas, Poseidonia and Agathopes: the south coast

Finikas is a small, quiet town with a harbor, the island's sailing club and a little beach with very clean water. It is also one of the few villages with a supermarket and a restaurant open all year. Hotel Brazzera sits directly on the coast with just 14 rooms.

Poseidonia is a small village in a protected bay, known for grand neoclassical mansions and luxurious villas, and it suits travelers who want a quiet, polished stay near Agathopes and Finikas. Olea Suite by the sea is a beach stay here.

Agathopes, about a 20-minute drive from Ermoupoli, has a more grown-up mood and views of two tiny islands. Calma Boutique Hotel sits right on the beach.

Vari, Achladi and Azolimnos: quieter southern shores

Vari has a calm, shallow, sandy beach in a sheltered bay, a fine choice for families, though its hotels can make it a bit crowded. Hotel Kamelo is right on the beach with a well-loved restaurant, and Syros Atlantis is another option. Pebbly Achladi is a 10-minute walk along the sea from Vari, and Emily Hotel sits directly on its beach. Azolimnos is the closest beach town to the capital, about 3.7 miles (6 km) away. It gets windy when the summer meltemi blows, which windsurfers love. Aegean View is a beachfront stay there.

Which area is best for first-timers?

Ermoupoli. If your time on the island is short, base yourself here and head out to the beaches on day trips.

Which area is best for couples?

Agathopes appeals if you want a quieter, more adult beach.

Which area is best for families?

Galissas, for its shallow beach and its pool-and-playground resorts. Vari is a calm alternative.

What are the best budget options?

Prices swing with the season, and shoulder season can bring a splurge property within reach, so check your exact dates before ruling anything out. In Ermoupoli, try Pefkakia Park, Locadiera Pansion or Casa di Lou, a centrally located apartment. Kini tends to be more affordable overall, with more apartments than hotels, and Guesthouse ERI, which has family rooms with kitchenettes, is a good pick. In Galissas, Ventoura Studios & Apartments is family-friendly and pet-friendly, with a pool, fitness center, sauna and spa. Klotho in Poseidonia and Thealos in Azolimnos round out the list.

Where should you stay without a car?

Ermoupoli. The ferry port and the KTEL bus station sit side by side, and taxis can take you anywhere on the island. All bus routes in Syros begin or end in Ermoupoli. One KTEL route serves Galissas, Finikas, Poseidonia, Megas Gialos, Vari and Azolimnos, and a second runs direct to Kini. Within town, including up to Ano Syros, mini-buses are free to ride. Bicycles can be rented too, and if you change your mind, cars are easy to rent in Ermoupoli.

No bus stops at the airport, so plan on a taxi when you land. Each town is easy to explore on foot once you arrive. Buses run daily and frequently in summer, but the direct Kini route is seasonal, so check the timetable before relying on it outside summer.
