Syros has plenty of lovely beaches, from shallow sandy bays that suit small kids to coves in the wild northwest and stone platforms right in town. The KTEL bus, taxis and rental cars make most of them easy to reach.
Which Syros beaches are best for families?
Many Syros beaches have sandy shores and shallow water that stretches well out from the beach, which makes swimming easy for families with young children.
Galissas
Sunbeds and umbrellas, snack bars, water sports and a sea ramp are all here, and tavernas are close by when hunger strikes. The sunbeds are among the pricier on Syros, and the rate moves with the month, the day of the week and how close you sit to the water. Bring snorkeling gear. When you want a break from the sand, walk up to the chapel of Agia Pakou, where you can take in a sweeping view over Galissas village.
Kini
Kini, a former fishing village turned small seaside resort, is especially popular with families. Its fine-sand beach lies inside a sheltering bay with shallow, clear water, and since it faces due west, Kini is well known for its sunsets. The tavernas serve freshly caught fish, and a bronze mermaid statue stands by the shore. Kini is a short drive from Ermoupoli, so it works for a day trip or a longer stay. Weekends and busy days can get crowded.
Agathopes
Agathopes is mostly sand, tucked into a protected cove near the village of Posidonia. The water is so shallow you can walk out what feels like 100 feet before it reaches your neck, and families with young children love it. Protected sand lilies grow on the beach, and the islets of Strongylo and Schinonisi sit offshore.
Vari
Vari lies in a sheltered, windless bay with fine yellow sand and blue-green water shallow enough for kids to splash around in. It has loungers and umbrellas, watersports, parking and facilities for people with mobility limitations. After lunch at one of the beachside tavernas, walk up to the hillside chapel of the Virgin Mary for a panoramic view.
Achladi
Achladi is a cozy fishing village beach that suits kids well. The pebbly sand meets clear blue water that is ideal for snorkeling, a taverna sits on the shore, and a little harbor with small boats fills one end.
Megas Gialos
Megas Gialos, the main beach of its popular settlement, is sheltered from the wind, with fine sand, shallow clear water that suits younger kids and a few tamarisk trees for shade. The beach isn't large, so ask the attendants who rent the lounge chairs to hold one for your next visit.
Finikas
Finikas mixes sand and fine pebbles, with a concrete platform for anyone who wants to stay sand-free. A good variety of tavernas and bars line the bay, and the marina is well equipped for sailboats. Calmo Mare, a traditional Greek mezedopoleio on the beach, has limited seating and sunset views, so book ahead.
Which Syros beach is best for a quiet swim?
Delfini
Delfini is an unassuming rocky cove with no wind and calm, clear water, perfect for snorkeling. One side has sunbeds and umbrellas, and the other is left natural with pebbles and sand. Locals head here when Kini gets crowded, and it's a good fallback on windy days.
Lotos
Lotos, close to Kini, is a partly organized beach of sand and pebbles with bright, shallow water and plenty of trees for shade.
Ampela
Ampela, about a kilometer from Megas Gialos, is one of the smallest beaches on the island. The water is very clear and the mood is serene, and you'll still find a few umbrellas and something to eat and drink.
Remote coves
For real seclusion, boats from Kini reach Gria Spilia (also called Amerikanou), Grammata, Varvarousa, Aetos and the rocky shore of Lia. Beaches in this northwestern stretch tend to be secluded and lightly equipped, so it helps to bring water, food and some shade. Grammata is known for ancient inscriptions carved into its rocks. Many of the island's secluded beaches are nudist-friendly. Armeos, near Galissas, is a secluded nudist beach, and reaching it may take a little rock climbing.
Which Syros beach has a party scene?
Agathopes comes about as close to a party scene as Syros gets. As you face the water, Ono Concept is on the right: a beach restaurant with sunbeds for rent, a full menu and a full bar, open through September. It gets especially crowded in high season on weekend late afternoons, with longer waits and steep prices to match. Its umbrellas look better than they shade, and a towel draped over the top helps. Mornings and early afternoons are calmer. The tavernas and cafes on the left side are more relaxed, and nearby De la Gracia restaurant is more reasonably priced.
Komito, linked to Agathopes by road, has fine golden sand, crystal-clear water and a lively beach bar with a young crowd. Tamarisk trees give some natural shade.
Which Syros beach is best for water sports?
Komito is the spot for renting gear: a flyboard or windsurf board, or a stand-up paddleboard for something gentler. Galissas is a good spot for snorkeling, so bring your gear.
To learn something new, head just north of Voulgari Beach to Syros Windsurfing School, which usually runs through September. The instructors teach kids and adults and supply all the equipment, and you can also paddleboard or kayak. A couple of trees and the school's small tent give a little shade, and parking is right across the street.
Where can you swim in Ermoupoli?
Three swim spots lie within walking distance of the town center.
Asteria, also called Agios Nikolaos, is the favorite with locals and visitors alike. It sits in the Vaporia district, about a 10-minute walk from Miaouli Square through the old town, and typing Ciel into Google Maps will get you there. Pass the blue-domed church of Agios Nikolaos and take the stairs down under the arch. Asteria is a series of stone and concrete platforms with ladders into deep blue water, plus one tiny sandy patch at the side. The water is deep right away, so Asteria suits confident swimmers. It is clear enough to see the bottom, and a snorkel and goggles make it even better.
Ciel, a chic café-bar at the far end, offers sunbeds in high season to guests who order food or drinks. The public pier with permanent straw umbrellas just before it is free and first come, first served. Sta Vaporia, a taverna halfway up the stairs, has a terrace over the water. Both are open from April to October.
Asteria faces south and is protected from northern winds, yet some days the water is flat and on others the waves crash against the platform. Early morning suits yoga or a quiet swim, and later in the day Ciel gets lively with Greek and dance music. For a calmer spot later in the day, turn right at the bottom of the main stairs to a second platform with no service, and bring your own towel, snacks and drinks. Expect to climb quite a few stairs on the way back.
Waves Beach, as it shows on Google Maps, is an easy stroll along the waterfront, just to the right of Hermes Hotel. Depending on the tide, there may be a strip of rocky shore where kids hunt for sea glass, or none at all, and a small cement area with a ladder. Water shoes help, and watch for large rocks underfoot. The sea here can be calm or rough depending on the weather, and waves can churn up moments after a ferry passes in the distance.
Continue past Waves Beach, the Cyclades Municipal Art Gallery and Nisaki Hotel toward the pier to reach the Ermoupoli Swim Basin. The protected water is usually calmer even when Waves Beach and Asteria are rough, and a couple of trees by a few benches give a little shade. Keep clear of docking ferries and anglers, and keep valuables with you rather than leaving them on shore while you swim.
When is the water warm enough to swim in Syros?
The sea is warm from summer through September. October is still a nice month to swim, especially on warmer days, though the water gets noticeably cooler each week. Some swimmers keep going through November without a wetsuit, though the water turns quite cold toward the end of the month, and children may be happier in wetsuits by then. At Asteria, locals keep swimming even in winter. For late-season dips, pick a day when the sea is calm.
How do you get to Syros beaches without a car?
The KTEL bus service connects Ermoupoli with various villages and beaches around Syros. All bus routes have Ermoupolis as their starting or terminal point, with the KTEL offices in a central spot next to the port, and buses run to the resorts every day in summer. Azolimnos, about 3.4 miles (5.5 km) southeast of Ermoupoli, is a fully organized sandy beach with loungers, beach bars and tavernas. Bicycles are available for rent. Taxis line up at the stand in the town square, or you can call to prearrange a pickup. When a taxi drops you off, set a time for it to come back so you aren't stranded at the beach.
