Best Time to Visit Santorini: Late May Through June, and September Into October

The best months are late May through June and September into October. The days are warm, rain is rare, and the crowds are lighter than in high summer. If high summer is when you can travel, expect plenty of sunshine, though you'll share the island with lots of other visitors and pay top prices.

When is the best time to visit Santorini?

Mid to late September is the sweet spot. The sea still holds its summer warmth, the weather is comfortable, and the island begins to mellow after the summer rush. Much of the island is still in business, from hotels and restaurants to boat trips. Hotel rates start to slip. It's also harvest season, so a winery visit can come with a taste of the new vintage straight from the barrel.

For an early-season trip, choose late May or June. May brings mild days and very little rain, but the sea is still cool, so swimming is for the brave. By June the water is warming up, which makes it a lovely time for a visit to Red Beach. The peak crowds haven't arrived yet.

October works too, especially the first half. The sea stays swimmable and the island still feels lively for most of the month. Early October also brings Santorini Experience, the island's big sporting weekend of running and open-water swimming races. As the month winds down, some hotels, restaurants and shops close until spring.

Winter is cool, damp and quiet. Rain is common, the days are short, and the sea is for looking at. January is the wettest month.

Spring is the island waking up. Wildflowers bloom across the caldera after the winter rain, the air is mild, and the days grow long enough for full days of walking. Evenings stay cool, so bring a warm jacket. By late spring the afternoons are warm enough for sunbathing, though the sea stays cool until June.

Early summer is warm and dry. June is warmer and drier than May, the sea turns comfortable for swimming, and the days run long and bright. It feels like summer before the full heat of July and August.

High summer is hot, bright and almost completely dry. July and August are the hottest months of the year.

Fall starts as summer's encore. September is warm, sunny and swimmable. October turns a little cooler and wetter, and by November you'll want long sleeves and a plan for rainy days.

When is Santorini busiest, and when is it quiet?

The tourist season begins around Orthodox Easter, when Greek and European visitors arrive first. Easter itself can be busy, mostly with locals out for the celebrations. Thousands of lanterns light up the towns at night, and on Good Friday the rooftops of Pyrgos are lit with fire. From there, crowds build through the spring, stay moderate in early summer, and peak in high summer. The island is small, so it fills up fast.

Oia at sunset is the pressure point. It draws a crowd every night, and people claim their spots early. Imerovigli and Fira offer the same sunset in a more relaxed setting.

Crowds thin through autumn, especially from late September on. From November through March the island is nearly empty, which is lovely for solitude as long as you plan around closures.

When is it cheapest to go?

Winter, hands down. Room rates hit their lowest of the year and deals are easy to find. The tradeoff is cooler, wetter weather and fewer places open.

For a better balance, aim for April or October. Hotels, tours and dining cost less than in summer, deals are common, and the weather is still pleasant. Prices begin to climb in June, though they stay below high summer levels.

High summer tends to cost the most, with hotel rooms and flights priced at their peak. For any trip from June through August, book hotels and restaurants four to eight months ahead, and reserve ferries early too. Two months out is the bare minimum for a hotel.

Is Santorini worth visiting in winter?

It is, for the right traveler. Winter shows the island's quiet side. Villages like Pyrgos and Oia are peaceful, the cliffs can be misty, and you'll share the lanes mostly with locals. Many of the island's wineries are open in winter, and with fewer visitors around you may get a more personal tasting and the chance to chat with the people who make the wine.

There are real limits. It's too cool for swimming, and you may get wind and rain. Book a cozy room, pack warm layers, and plan a slow trip of village walks and long tavern meals.

Which month is right for you?

  • Beach swimmers: June through October. The sea is warmest in August and September, and the black-sand beaches such as Perissa run warmer still, since the dark lava soaks up heat.
  • The Santorini Jazz Festival plays in Kamari in July.
  • Sightseers and hikers: May, June, September and October. The temperatures suit Akrotiri, Ancient Thera and the Fira to Oia trail, and the crowds are smaller than in summer.
  • Couples: late May to early June, or September, for warm weather, good sunsets and a bit of privacy.
  • Families: the shoulder months, when the weather is easy and the lines are shorter.
  • Budget travelers: April, October, or winter if you can handle the chill.
  • Crowd avoiders: late September, or any time from November to March.

If your dates fall in late October or the off-season, confirm with your hotel and any restaurants you have in mind that they'll be open before you lock in your trip.
