Greece in October: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

Sightseeing, hiking, road trips and softer hotel prices make October a favorite month for many visitors to Greece. The first half of the month can still feel like summer, especially on Crete and Rhodes. Late October brings cooler evenings, more rain and more ferry disruptions, and it feels like autumn.

The table shows Athens, a good guide to Greece's popular holiday spots in October. Days are warm enough for short sleeves, evenings call for a layer, and skies mix sun and cloud. Rain usually comes in short showers, and it grows more frequent as the month goes on.

Where you go matters as much as when. On Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos and Paros, days are mild, with wind, cloud and the occasional shower. Exposed caldera terraces and ferry decks can feel properly cool after dark. Corfu and the Ionian Islands tend to be wetter than the Cyclades, Crete and Rhodes, so pack rain gear if you head there. Northern Greece and the mountains are noticeably cooler, especially at night.

Can you swim in Greece in October?

The sea holds much of its summer warmth and often feels more comfortable than in May or early June. If you want warm water and warm air together, Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Karpathos are good places to look. You can swim on Santorini, Naxos, Paros and Mykonos too, though wind and cooler air can take the shine off a beach day.

Is October a good time to visit Greece?

Yes, for the right trip. Athens is far more comfortable than in July or August for long days at the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the historic center, and its restaurants, nightlife and museums are in full swing. The Peloponnese is made for a road trip, with Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus and Monemvasia easy to explore without summer heat. Delphi and Meteora are good choices too, with cooler weather for sightseeing and hiking.

On the islands, timing shapes the trip. From the 11th to the 20th, sightseeing pairs well with a few possible beach days, but the weather gets less predictable and seasonal businesses start to close. In the last ten days, plan an autumn sightseeing trip. Sunny, warm days can still turn up, especially in the south, but showers, wind, chilly evenings and ferry schedule changes grow more likely.

Which Greek islands are best in October?

Crete and Rhodes are the strongest choices, and the best islands late in the month. Santorini is lovely for sightseeing, with quieter caldera towns and lower hotel prices. Mykonos in October suits time in the main town and on quiet beaches, since many beach clubs have wrapped up for the season and buses run less often.

On any island, your base decides how lively the trip feels. Main towns stay active long after the beach resorts go quiet. Chania, Heraklion and Rhodes Town run all year, while Fira, Naxos Town, Parikia, Mykonos Town and Corfu Town are quieter but still lively. Beach clubs, water-sports outfits and small resort hotels are usually the first to close. A cheap room at a beach resort is no bargain once the restaurants, shops and buses around it have stopped for the season, so after mid-October, stay in a main town.

Is Greece cheaper in October?

Yes. October is much quieter than September and usually cheaper too, since airlines and hotels move to shoulder-season rates. You'll have more choice than in summer, but book ahead in Athens, Santorini, Chania and Rhodes Town if you have a favorite hotel in mind.

Can you island hop in Greece in October?

Yes, if you keep it simple. Airline and ferry schedules get trimmed back, and routes that run daily in summer may sail just a few days a week, so confirm the exact sailing dates before booking hotels. Stick to major islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Crete and Rhodes, and limit yourself to one or two plus Athens. Santorini, Naxos and Paros pair well early in the month. Later on, Athens plus one island, or Crete or Rhodes alone, is easier.

A cancellation matters more now, because the next ferry may not leave until the following day. In rough seas, a larger conventional ferry is usually more comfortable than a small high-speed one. Strikes are common in Greece and can disrupt public transportation, taxis, seaports and airports. Plan to be in Athens, or on your departure island, at least a day before your flight home.

How does October compare with September and November?

September is warmer, busier and more expensive, and it's the better pick for beaches, nightlife, ferries and island hopping. October is better for sightseeing, hiking, lower prices and thinner crowds, with Crete and Rhodes the best choices if beaches still matter.

By November the weather turns cooler and wetter, and most islands are firmly in the off-season. It still works well for Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete and mainland sightseeing.

What is there to do in Greece in October?

Mountain hiking is excellent, with the forests in fall color, though evenings can be cold. On Santorini, cooler weather makes the Fira-to-Oia walk much more enjoyable, and boat tours still run, with weather cancellations more likely late in the month. The Samaria Gorge on Crete usually remains open into October, but bad weather can shut it with little warning, so confirm its status before you head out.

The Aegean is still warm enough for scuba diving, though you may want a wetsuit. Chios has many dive sites, and Mykonos is known for the Tragonisi Caverns. Sailors find shoulder-season rates and less competition for berths in popular harbors.

Late October brings a few events. Crete's Chestnut Festival, on the last weekend of the month, fills the island with folk music, dancing and plenty of chestnuts. Thessaloniki's Dimitria Festival fills a day in late October with ballet, opera and classical music. Admission to state-run archaeological sites, monuments and museums is free that day, and many are open, but check the hours of the site you want. Banks, government offices and many shops close for the day, while restaurants in tourist areas are usually easier to find open.

What should you pack for Greece in October?

Pack for warm afternoons and cool or wet spells. T-shirts and light clothes work for the day, with a sweater or light jacket for evenings, and long pants and a fleece help later in the month. On windy islands, a rain jacket tends to serve you better than an umbrella. Bring comfortable shoes for archaeological sites, hikes and cobbled streets. A swimsuit is worth packing, particularly for Crete, Rhodes or Kos, or for a trip early in the month.

What do Americans need to enter Greece?

U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport reported lost or stolen will not get you in. Be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure if asked. Once in Greece, carry your passport or other photo ID at all times. If you plan to rent a car, bring a valid U.S. driver's license plus an international driver's permit, which Greek law requires even if the rental company doesn't ask to see it.
