May is one of the nicest months to be on Mykonos. The days are mild, rain is rare, the island is quiet, and hotel rates sit far below summer levels. The sea is still cool in May and the beach clubs are just beginning their season, so the second half of the month tends to suit many travelers well.

What is the weather like in Mykonos in May?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Sea | Rainy days | Daylight (15th) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| May | 72°F (22°C) | 62°F (16°C) | 66°F (19°C) | 2 | 14 h 10 |

The sun on Mykonos is stronger than the forecast suggests. A day in the low 70s can feel like the 80s once you sit in full light, and the air turns noticeably cool after sunset. Occasional showers are possible, but they are uncommon.
The sea is chilly for most people. Some swimmers go in on warm afternoons late in the month, and plenty of visitors settle for sunbathing and a long lunch by the water. If swimming matters most, September is the better month.
Mykonos is nicknamed "The Island of the Winds," and May is its calmest month. Wind can still make a beach uncomfortable and affect boat trips and ferries. On days when the wind comes from the north, the southern beaches such as Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou and Paraga offer more shelter than the open beaches on the north side.
Is May a good time to visit Mykonos?
For most travelers, yes. Mykonos Town has plenty of restaurants, shops and bars open, and getting a table is easy, even at the last minute. Cruise ships bring day-trippers in the afternoon, yet the crowds are manageable, and mornings and evenings feel lively without being packed. In July and August the island is extremely crowded, and a lane that takes three minutes to walk in mid-May can take twenty.
Hotel value is May's biggest advantage. Hotel prices drop well below their July and August levels, especially at luxury properties, which makes May a nice time to treat yourself to a bigger room or a better location.
The island fills up and opens up as the month goes on:
- Early May is calm and has lower hotel rates, with fewer beach restaurants and clubs open. Greek Orthodox Easter sometimes falls now, bringing church services, local celebrations and more domestic travelers, so check the date before you book.
- Mid-May brings more open hotels and restaurants, while the beaches and nightlife stay relatively calm. It's a good balance of price and atmosphere.
- Late May is warmer and livelier, with beach services opening at Ornos and Platis Gialos. This is the best stretch for most visitors.
How does May compare with April and June?
April is cooler, with a few more rainy days and a sea too cold for swimming. It's a soft opening for the season, and some restaurants, hotels, shops and beach clubs are still closed early in the month.
June is where summer begins, with warmer, drier days, a warmer sea and beach clubs moving toward their full party schedule. It also brings more people and higher prices. May sits between the two, with mild days, a quiet island and nearly everything open by the last week.
Where should you stay in Mykonos in May?
Location matters more in May than in summer, because a remote beach hotel can feel isolated when nearby restaurants and clubs haven't opened yet.
- Mykonos Town is the best base, especially in early May. You're close to restaurants, bars, shops, the Old Port, taxis and buses, and Town stays busy even when the beaches are sleepy.
- Ornos works well as a beach base close to Town, and couples and families often like it.
- Platis Gialos has beachfront hotels and restaurants right on the sand, and it works better in late May, once more beach services are running.
- Agios Ioannis offers quieter hotels and sunset views toward Delos, best with a rental car or a reliable hotel transfer.
- Elia has larger beach hotels with more space, though it feels remote early in the season.
Before booking, check that the hotel restaurant, spa and shuttle are running for your dates. Many private pools on Mykonos are not heated, so they can feel chilly in May, and it's worth confirming whether yours is heated before you pay extra for a private-pool suite.
Are beach clubs open in Mykonos in May?
Some are, especially later in the month. A club serving food, drinks and sunbeds may still be running limited entertainment, fewer DJ events or shorter hours. If you have a specific club in mind, such as Scorpios or Nammos, look up its opening date and event calendar before you book. If parties are the point of the trip, June through September is the better window.
What is there to do in Mykonos in May?
Wander Mykonos Town. The narrow lanes, the windmills, Little Venice and the harbor are a pleasure without summer crowds, especially early in the morning and in the evening. Petty crime is common in popular tourist spots, so keep a hand on your bag in busy lanes.
Take a day trip to Delos. The archaeological site has little shade, and May's milder heat makes it far more comfortable than summer. Bring sun protection and check boat schedules.
Spend an afternoon at the beach.
Catch sunset at Little Venice, the windmills or Agios Ioannis, all far calmer than in peak summer.
Rent a car for a day to reach Ano Mera and the quieter beaches that are hard to get to by bus. Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Thieves in Greece break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so it's wise to take your belongings with you.
What should you pack for Mykonos in May?
Shorts, a t-shirt or a casual dress will do for the day. Add a light jacket or sweater for evenings, which are cool and often windy, though some nights are warm enough to skip it. Bring sun protection, because the light is strong. The streets are uneven cobblestones, so pack flat sandals or sneakers and leave the heels at home.
Are ferries running to Mykonos in May?
Yes, on thinner schedules than in summer. Ferries connect Mykonos with Athens and several nearby islands, including Tinos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini. Tinos is the easiest pairing thanks to its short crossing, and the Santorini link depends on seasonal high-speed schedules. Not every summer route runs daily, so check timetables before booking non-refundable hotels on several islands, and keep your island hopping simple, particularly in early May. If your flight home leaves from Athens, spend your last night in Athens so you aren't relying on a same-day ferry.
What do Americans need to enter Greece?
U.S. citizens can visit Greece without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport you've reported lost or stolen won't get you in. Be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure if asked. Once you arrive, carry your passport or another photo ID at all times.
