March is a good month for Greece if you want ancient sites, city streets and hiking trails without the summer crowds. The days are getting longer, wildflowers are out across the countryside, and prices are still low. Leave the swimsuit at home: the Aegean and Ionian seas stay too cold for swimming.

What is the weather like in Greece in March?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainfall | Sunshine per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| February | 57°F (14°C) | 45°F (7°C) | 1.8 in (46 mm) | 5.1 h |
| March | 63°F (17°C) | 48°F (9°C) | 1.6 in (41 mm) | 6.5 h |
| April | 70°F (21°C) | 54°F (12°C) | 1.2 in (31 mm) | 8.0 h |
The table gives Athens figures. Rain eases as the month goes on, though about one day in three is still wet on average. The weather shifts noticeably over the month, and by the final couple of weeks spring has clearly arrived.
Afternoons can feel like spring while the evenings stay cool. Where you go also matters. Northern Greece runs noticeably cooler and more changeable, with more rain. The Peloponnese has a springlike feel, and Crete is often several degrees warmer than the capital.
How does March compare with February and April?
February is still in the heart of the wet season, though January is the rainiest month. Expect cooler air, fewer sunny hours and very few visitors, with carnival season bringing a festive mood to many towns. March is the step toward spring: more sun, less rain, the first real blooms, and travelers beginning to trickle back. By April the air is clearly warmer and the sunshine lasts longer. That suits early island hopping and countryside drives, and crowds stay small because the main tourist season has yet to begin.
Is March a good time to visit Greece?
Yes, for travelers who come for culture, hiking or a slower pace. March is shoulder season. Tourist numbers are low, especially early in the month, the museums are open, and airlines and hotels haven't raised their rates yet, so bargains are still around. Athens is at its best. Tour groups are absent, the streets are lively, and at night locals dine at sidewalk tables as if summer had already begun.
The trade-offs are real. Ferries run far less often than in summer, so check the current timetable before you build an island route around it. Many hotels and restaurants are still closed, particularly in smaller island towns. The weather can swing from showers to sunshine within a few days.
Where should you go in Greece in March?
Thessaloniki works well for a lively city break, with Byzantine churches, strolls along the waterfront, a busy café scene and a great food scene. On the mainland, Greeks themselves like to explore the Peloponnese at this time of year, and the smaller cities stay calm and easygoing. Pelion is green and peaceful in early spring, and stone-built villages like Makrinitsa and Tsagarada are stirring after winter, with cozy guesthouses and walking trails through chestnut forests and hillside orchards. In the southern Peloponnese, Kalamata has a walkable old town and a mellow pace. The nearby Mani Peninsula is a lovely spot for a short road trip, with stone villages, olive groves, sea views and very little traffic, and quiet places like Kardamyli may feel almost like your own.
The smaller islands are still quiet. Bigger islands like Crete and Rhodes begin to stir after winter, and Rhodes offers tourist services all year plus an Old Town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On good days, Crete's southern coast is just warm enough for sunbathing. Santorini and Mykonos are pleasant before the summer hordes arrive.
What is there to do in Greece in March?
Ancient sites and museums lead the list. Athens, Delphi and the Peloponnese are comfortable for sightseeing, and Knossos on Crete is relatively deserted. Photographers do well too. The air is very clear, the low sun adds rich color, and you are less likely to compete with crowds for a photo of the Parthenon.
Hiking is excellent. By late March the snow is melting off the mainland mountains and flowers are blooming on the slopes. The island of Kea has fine trails, and the Peloponnese mountains are hard to beat.
Runners have two races to choose from. The Athens Half-Marathon draws more than 20,000 runners through the city streets. The Nafplio Marathon, usually held in early March, follows a scenic coastal route through the Peloponnese town, with a half-marathon, a 5K and a 2.5K fun run for novices, plus social and cultural events alongside.
March 25 is both Independence Day and the Feast of the Annunciation, and cities across Greece hold parades. In Athens, a 90-minute military parade sets off from Syntagma Square. Look for the traditional dish of the day, bakaliaros skordalia (fried salted cod with garlic sauce and olive oil), but plan ahead, because many restaurants and tourist services close.
Late in the month, yacht charter companies start opening their doors, so an early sailing trip becomes possible.
What should you pack for Greece in March?
Pack layers. Bring T-shirts and even shorts for sunny afternoons, plus a sweater or light jacket for the cool evenings. A light waterproof jacket earns its place, since showers are still common.
What do Americans need to enter Greece?
U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you should be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure if asked. Greece is a generally safe destination, but petty crime is common in tourist areas, and pickpockets work public transportation, especially the metro. Strikes and demonstrations can disrupt transportation with little notice, so build a little slack into your plans.
