Greece in June: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

June is the month Greece tips into summer, and for most travelers it's one of the best times to go. The traces of spring that linger in May are gone. The sea becomes part of everyday life, and restaurant tables stay busy outdoors long after sunset. It suits beach lovers, island hoppers, families and anyone who wants long days before the busiest weeks of the year.

What is the weather like in Greece in June?

Athens weather from May to July (long-term averages)
Month Average high Average low Rainfall Sunshine per day
May 80°F (27°C) 62°F (17°C) 0.8 in (19 mm) 9.7 h
June 89°F (32°C) 70°F (21°C) 0.3 in (7 mm) 11.8 h
July 94°F (34°C) 75°F (24°C) 0.3 in (7 mm) 12.4 h

The table covers Athens, a useful benchmark for the country's most popular destinations. Conditions shift with the landscape. The islands catch cooling sea breezes, the mainland warms faster, and mountain areas stay pleasantly fresh. Temperatures vary from island to island, and Crete typically runs a few degrees higher. Northern Greece stays a little milder than the south, which makes it comfortable for afternoon outings.

Rain is rare, and rarer still in the south. Most days are dry and sunny under a deep, steady blue sky. Evenings are pleasant, often with a light breeze that makes outdoor dinners easy. Late in the month, island afternoons away from the cooling Meltemi winds can turn sweltering.

Is June a good time to visit Greece?

For most people, yes. Visitor numbers climb through the month without reaching their peak. Early June puts you ahead of the crowds. By the end of the month, popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini can feel busy, though it's all still calmer than July and August.

Where you go shapes how busy June feels. On Santorini, an early walk along the caldera brings softer light and quiet streets before the island gets lively. On Mykonos, the beach clubs are open and reservations are generally easier to get than in peak weeks. If you dislike crowds and the party scene, look at quieter Cyclades islands such as Sifnos, Siros and Tinos. Milos is another good choice: it's little visited and has more than 70 beaches and a wild interior for hiking.

Prices move with the crowds. Early June may still offer a few shoulder season deals, but as the month closes, airlines, hotels and car rental companies mostly return to regular peak pricing. The earlier in the month you go, the better the deal.

Ferries between the popular islands are running summer schedules or switching over to them, which makes June a strong month for island hopping. Book accommodation and ferry tickets in advance.

How does June compare with July?

July is hotter, the sea is warmer, and the Mediterranean summer runs at full volume. It's also peak season, when crowds swell and bargain prices are long gone. June gives you much of that atmosphere with more room to breathe. Island life is in full swing, yet a peaceful café overlooking the sea is still easy to find.

What is there to do in Greece in June?

Start with the sea. The water is warm enough for comfortable swimming, and June is made for sailing, snorkeling and boat trips to coves that are hard to reach by road. On land, early mornings and late afternoons suit hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. For trekking, Samaria Gorge on Crete and Vikos Gorge in the Zagori region are top picks, and canyoning, climbing and kayaking are popular too. Rhodes adds a seasonal treat in the Valley of Butterflies, where the butterflies arrive in June and stay around until September.

For sightseeing, start early. In Athens, mornings belong to the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. Once the afternoon sun softens, the city comes outside, and rooftop restaurants start filling up as locals meet friends after work. The Athens and Epidavros Festival, which celebrates the ancient Greek dramatists, runs from late May through October, with performances in ancient and modern venues, including the ancient Theater of Epidavros.

Local events fill the calendar. During the last week of June, the Miaoulia Festival on Hydra honors War of Independence hero Admiral Miaoulis with concerts, dancing and parades. Navy Week brings re-enactments and feasting to ports large and small, and Crete's celebration is the largest.

What should you pack for Greece in June?

Think light and breathable. Shorts, T-shirts, summer dresses and swimwear cover most days. Add a wide-brim hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, since the sun is strong and the glare off whitewashed walls is blinding.

Comfortable walking shoes matter even on a beach trip, because you'll be wandering old streets, markets and harbors. Pack sandals for the beach as well. A light layer helps on ferry crossings and in mountain villages, where it cools down after sunset. A reusable water bottle and a small day pack round things out.

What do Americans need to enter Greece?

U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport that has been reported lost or stolen will be refused at the border. Be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure if asked.

Greece is a generally safe destination, though petty crime is common in tourist areas, and pickpockets work popular sites and public transportation, especially the metro. Carry a passport or photo ID at all times. Forest fires are common in the dry summer months and occasionally close roads, and transportation strikes can interrupt ferries, flights, taxis and public transit. If you rent a car, Greek law requires you to carry a valid U.S. driver's license and an international driving permit, even when the rental company doesn't ask to see the permit. Thieves target rental cars, so keep passports, valuables and luggage out of the car whenever you park.
