NOAA’s official normals for the airport station put the average high at 91.2°F and the average low at 76.8°F, so even the coolest stretch of an August night sits close to 77°F. Afternoon thunderstorms come with the season, the Gulf feels like bathwater, and in mid-month the sun doesn’t set until 8:09 p.m. Those long, warm evenings belong to the Riverwalk once the rain has moved on.

If Tampa is already on the calendar and the open question is the date, heat barely separates the summer months: July and September both sit within a degree of August’s high. Rain and storm season matter more. A trip built around mornings outdoors and afternoons under a roof suits August well, and Tampa makes that easy with a free streetcar and a riverfront path lined with museums.

August falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center dates it from June 1 to November 30, with a peak on September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Tampa weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days

All the air figures come from one real thermometer: NOAA station USW00012842, listed as “TAMPA INTL AP”, with monthly normals averaged by NOAA NCEI over 1991 to 2020. That makes them station readings rather than a reanalysis of a grid cell. The gauge stands at the airport, inland on the bay side rather than on a beach, so a Gulf-front afternoon can differ from it. Every figure here is that airport’s: an August high of 91.2°F, a low of 76.8°F and 9.03 inches of rain across the month.

In an average August, 11.2 days record at least 0.10 inch of rain and 2.9 days bring an inch or more. Put into a week of vacation, measurable rain lands on a bit more than one day in three, and a true downpour arrives about three times a month. Only 14.4°F separates the average high from the average low, so nights bring little relief and no sweater needs to make the trip. Pack for heat and showers: breathable fabrics, a compact umbrella or rain shell, sandals that can get soaked, and one light layer for air-conditioned museums, restaurants and the flight home.

On August 15 the sun rises at 6:59 a.m. and sets at 8:09 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, about 13 hours 10 minutes of daylight according to sunrise-sunset.org. Plan the first outdoor hour right after sunrise, when the air is closest to its daily low, and time a paddle takeout or a waterfront walk to finish by a little after 8 p.m.

Can you swim in Tampa in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea figure comes from a different source than the airport normals. Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Tampa at 89.2°F in August, averaged over 2015 to 2024. It is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Other tables quoting a slightly lower August number may be measuring the whole day.

At close to 89°F, the Gulf feels warm the moment you wade in, with no cold shock and no need for a wetsuit. A swim cools the skin less than you might hope, so shade, drinking water and a midday break matter as much as sunscreen. Honeymoon Island State Park, on the Gulf northwest of Tampa, has one designated swimming area for a supervised-feeling beach morning.

We found no wind or wave data for Tampa in August, so we give no swell figure. The sea-state factor we can date is storm season: with most Atlantic activity between mid-August and mid-October, check the National Hurricane Center before a beach day and follow any beach warning flags.

How busy is Tampa in August? Crowds and prices

August sits in Florida’s wet season, well away from the November-to-April stretch our best-time guide treats as the state’s main season. We found no hotel occupancy series or monthly room rates for Tampa, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. Access is simple year-round: Tampa International boarded 12,075,591 passengers in 2024, enough for the FAA to class it a large hub, and our Florida flights guide compares it with the state’s other airports.

We have no booking-window data for August, so we name no number of weeks ahead. The booking choice that protects an August trip is a refundable rate or free cancellation close to arrival, because the month sits inside hurricane season. Cruise passengers need the same flexibility for the night before sailing: Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines, so many travelers fly in, sleep one night and board.

Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on stays, filed and paid together with Florida’s 6% state sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. Together they add 12% to the quoted room rate, before any local surtax we could not verify. Check whether a listing’s total already includes both.

Location is the splurge that changes an August stay. A room within a short walk of the Tampa Riverwalk or a stop on the free TECO Line Streetcar lets you head indoors at the first thunder and step back out when it clears, with no car baking in a lot. Things to do in Tampa in August

August hands you water at every temperature: a Gulf averaging 89.2°F at its daily peak, shaded rivers for an early paddle, and spring-fed pools that stay the same all year. Add evenings bright until past 8 p.m., and a day can start in a kayak and end with a sunset walk along the river.

Hillsborough River State Park has the most room of the three river parks near Tampa: 350 parking spaces, three canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail. Little Manatee River State Park has 8.4 miles of trail, 109 spaces and one launch, and Alafia River State Park stays small at 50 spaces, one launch and 1.2 miles of trail. On the Gulf, Honeymoon Island State Park counts 2,021 parking spaces and 1,671 feet of boardwalk, and Ybor City Museum State Park adds 311 feet of boardwalk. These counts come from the state’s 2024 facilities inventory. We could not read park entrance fees or opening hours, so check before you drive.

The spring parks within reach of Tampa show the season most clearly. At Weeki Wachee Springs State Park (255 parking spaces and one designated swimming area), Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (197 spaces) and Crystal River Preserve State Park (77 spaces), the water holds its temperature all year while the August air climbs toward the airport’s 91.2°F average high. The TECO Line Streetcar is free to ride, according to both HART and the City of Tampa. It runs 2.7 miles from downtown through the Channel District to Ybor City every 15 minutes. Downtown, the 2.6-mile Tampa Riverwalk follows the Hillsborough River past Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Tampa Bay History Center and Water Works Park, and walking it is free as well.

Tampa in August: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts at 7 a.m., just after the 6:59 sunrise, with a Riverwalk stroll from Water Works Park toward Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park while the air is at its coolest. By mid-morning, move indoors to the Tampa Museum of Art or the Tampa Bay History Center, both on the path (we have not verified their hours). After lunch, ride the free streetcar to Ybor City and walk the 311-foot boardwalk at Ybor City Museum State Park before the afternoon clouds build, then wait out any storm indoors. Head back to the river for the last light around 8:09 p.m.

Give day two to the water: be at Hillsborough River State Park as soon as it opens and launch from one of its three put-ins, or drive to Honeymoon Island for a morning in its swimming area. Plan to be off the water by early afternoon, and leave it at the first thunder. If the weather turns, switch to Ybor City or the museums by streetcar, or use HART buses: $2.00 a ride with a Flamingo Fares card, the app or a contactless card, with the day capped at $4.00, so two boardings make the rest of the service day free. Tampa in August vs July and September

Highs barely move across the three months, from 91.0°F in July to 91.2°F in August and 90.2°F in September, with lows of 76.6°F, 76.8°F and 75.3°F on the same NOAA airport normals. August carries the most rain of the three at 9.03 inches, against 7.75 in July and 6.09 in September. September also drops to 8.2 rain days from the 11.2 that July and August share. At sea, Open-Meteo’s daily-maximum averages slide from 89.9°F to 89.2°F to 87.2°F.

Moving four weeks earlier into July brings 1.28 fewer inches of rain and a Gulf 0.7°F warmer, with the same count of rain days and near-identical heat. Moving four weeks later into September cuts three rain days and a degree off the high, and leaves the Gulf 2°F cooler. It also puts the trip on the National Hurricane Center’s September 10 peak, so September asks for even more flexible bookings than August.

Is August a good time to visit Tampa?

Yes, for travelers who want warm water, long evenings and a city that works in the mornings and under a roof: families on a summer-break trip, cruise passengers flying in to board at Port Tampa Bay, and paddlers happy to be on the river early. August suits them less well if the plan hinges on long midday hikes or a fixed, non-refundable date, since the month sits inside hurricane season and averages 9.03 inches of rain.

If August doesn’t fit, September trims the rain to 6.09 inches over 8.2 days but carries the storm peak. Among the three summer months, August packs the heaviest rain into each wet day, 9.03 inches over the same 11.2 days that July spreads 7.75 across, and it keeps the Gulf at 89.2°F between showers.

The last word

Book the refundable room first, and an August trip to Tampa settles into an easy shape: river or Riverwalk before lunch, museums through the storm hours, and back outside until the 8:09 p.m. sunset. Travelers with children have a ready rain plan too. The Glazer Children’s Museum sits on the same Riverwalk path as the art and history museums, near Amalie Arena and the Tampa Convention Center, so a sudden downpour means a short dash under cover.
