Day Trips from Crete: Chania, Rethymno, Arkadi Monastery and Agios Nikolaos

Before the first coffee is poured on the harbor, the roads out of Heraklion already carry the day’s first buses and rental cars. Crete is long enough that each direction leads somewhere different: a Venetian harbor town, a monastery on a plateau, a gorge in the White Mountains, a lagoon facing a small island. These are the outings that fill a day from the island’s main bases, with the dishes you can stop for along the way.

What are the best day trips from Crete?

The strongest day trips from Crete are the towns and sites strung along the island’s north coast, plus one gorge in the southwest and one lagoon in the east, each giving a different Crete from the one you left in the morning.

  • Chania, for a harbor and an old town built around Venetian and Turkish memories.
  • Rethymno, for a medieval old town and a Venetian fortress in the middle of the north coast.
  • Arkadi Monastery, for a Renaissance-style church on a plateau above Rethymno.
  • Samaria Gorge, for a national park between the White Mountains and Mount Volakias.
  • Agios Nikolaos, for a town built around a small circular lake in Mirabello Bay.
  • Elounda and Spinalonga, for a quiet lagoon harbor and a tiny island offshore.

What ties them together is variety. Crete is the largest Greek island, and a day spent in one corner feels nothing like a day spent in another. Pick by mood: stone alleys and stuffed pastries in the west, mountains and ravines in the southwest, lagoons and lakeside cafés in the east.

The food stops matter as much as the sights. Dakos, the barley rusk topped with tomato and soft white cheese, shows up on café tables almost everywhere. Kalitsounia, the small folded cheese pies, are the pastry to look for in town bakeries. Gamopilafo, the rich wedding rice, is a dish you meet in tavernas that cook the island’s old recipes.

The best day trips from Crete

Chania and its old town

Chania sits on the northwest coast of Crete, about 90 miles west of Heraklion, and the old town is the reason to come. It centers on the harbor and spreads into a maze of alleys where Venetian mansions stand beside old hammams (Turkish baths), minarets and churches. Stone lanes are lined with bougainvillea, and some of the fountains still carry Ottoman inscriptions.

You spend the day on foot in the harbor quarter, stopping for a coffee or a plate of dakos at a table by the water. Nea Hora, the beach nearest to the old town, lies just beyond its western end, and it is where you go if you want a swim to break up the walking. The palace of ancient Kydonia in Chania has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2025, a layer of history that sits under the Venetian town you see on the surface.

Chania suits travelers who like to wander without a list. Leave room for a long lunch, and for the bakeries where kalitsounia are sold by the piece.

Rethymno: Venetian old town and Fortezza

Rethymno is the third largest city on Crete’s north coast and lies between Chania and Heraklion, with Chania about 43 miles to the west. Its old town, the palia poli, was almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice, and it is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete. Venetian fortifications, Orthodox and Catholic churches, minarets and old hammams stand within a few streets of each other.

Above the town rises the Fortezza, a Venetian-era citadel and one of the best-preserved castles on the island, open to the public. Walk its ramparts, then drop back into the alleys for a coffee. A vast beach lined with hotels, restaurants and cafés runs beside the town, so a swim and a seafront lunch fit into the same outing.

In the high season, Sea Jets high-speed catamarans run direct from Rethymno to Santorini, a crossing of around 2.5 hours. That ferry is a different kind of trip from a day out around Crete, but it shows how the town works as a port as well as a place to stroll.

Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi is a Greek Orthodox monastery on a plateau 14 miles southeast of Rethymno, and it takes you from the coast into the island’s interior. The katholikon, the monastery’s main church, dates from the 16th century and was completed in a Renaissance Revival style that mixes Roman and Baroque elements. That blend of styles makes it look different from the Byzantine churches you see in many villages.

The visit is a quiet stop in a day built around Rethymno. You step through the courtyard, see the façade of the church and take in the plateau around it. Pair Arkadi with the old town and the Fortezza at Rethymno for a day that moves from medieval streets to a mountain plateau and back to the sea.

Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge lies in southwest Crete, in the regional unit of Chania, between the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and Mount Volakias. It is a National Park of Greece and a World’s Biosphere Reserve, which tells you what kind of place it is: a protected mountain landscape, not a tourist stop with a ticket booth and a gift shop at its center.

You come for the scenery of the gorge itself, with the White Mountains rising on one side and Mount Volakias on the other. Because it sits in the southwest, the outing belongs to a Chania base more than to a Heraklion one, given that Chania is the west end of the island’s north coast.

Plan the rest of the day around food. A taverna meal after time outdoors is a good place for gamopilafo or a plate of dakos, and nothing about this trip asks you to rush.

Agios Nikolaos and Lake Voulismeni

Agios Nikolaos lies in eastern Crete, in Mirabello Bay, east of Heraklion and west of Sitia. The town was built around Lake Voulismeni, a small lagoon with a circular shape that is the landmark of the whole place. A small park with a trail runs beside the water, with traditional fishing boats, ducks, pigeons, an amphitheatre and many cafés.

The town has a lively atmosphere all year round, so a day here is mostly about sitting by the lake and strolling to the harbor. Part of Agios Nikolaos sits on the ruins of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara, a reminder that the seafront cafés stand on very old ground.

It suits a slow day with a coffee at the water’s edge, a plate of kalitsounia and time to look at the boats. It also works as the base for the next trip east along the bay.

Elounda and Spinalonga

Elounda is a small harbor on the north coast, near Agios Nikolaos and part of its municipality. It sits in the lagoon between Spinalonga island and Mirabello Bay, and its history begins with the ancient city of Olous, an important commercial and religious center. A local bus service with air-conditioned buses connects Elounda to Agios Nikolaos.

Spinalonga is an island in the Gulf of Elounda, next to the town of Plaka, and it is tiny, with an area of just 0.033 square miles. You see it across the water from the harbor, a low island that gives the lagoon its shape. Heraklion Airport lies about 50 miles from Elounda, a 1-hour drive, which is the figure to use when you plan how this corner fits into a trip across the island.

Spend the day at the waterfront, with a meal at a harbor taverna and a look at the island across the lagoon.

Day trips from Crete compared

Trip Where it lies Best for
Chania Northwest coast, about 90 miles west of Heraklion Venetian harbor, old town alleys, Nea Hora beach
Rethymno On the north coast between Chania and Heraklion, about 43 miles east of Chania Old town, Fortezza, the long town beach
Arkadi Monastery On a plateau 14 miles southeast of Rethymno A 16th-century church and the interior plateau
Samaria Gorge Southwest Crete, in the Chania regional unit A national park between the White Mountains and Mount Volakias
Agios Nikolaos Eastern Crete, in Mirabello Bay Lake Voulismeni, harbor cafés, a lakeside trail
Elounda and Spinalonga Near Agios Nikolaos, in the lagoon facing Spinalonga island A lagoon harbor and a view of the island

To choose, start from where you are sleeping. Crete runs about 160 miles from east to west and narrows to 7.5 miles near Ierapetra, so the island rewards picking one end and exploring it well rather than crossing it for a single stop. The north coast hosts the three towns, with Rethymno sitting between Chania and Heraklion, which is why they can be combined into longer days.

If you want stone alleys and harbor cafés, Chania and Rethymno are the picks. If mountains and a protected landscape appeal more, the Samaria Gorge is the one that stands apart. If a lagoon, a lakeside coffee and an island view suit you better, head east to Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Arkadi pairs naturally with Rethymno, and Spinalonga with Elounda.

Tour or on your own?

The answer depends on the trip, because each one asks for something different. Crete is about 3,260 square miles, and a long coast road links the north-coast towns, so the distances in the table are the starting point for any choice between a tour and doing it yourself.

Chania and Rethymno lie on the same coast, and Heraklion sits farther east, so a day that links two of them is a matter of working out how many miles you are willing to cover. Arkadi lies off that coast on its plateau, which means a stop there adds a detour to a day in Rethymno.

In the east, Elounda has a local air-conditioned bus connection with Agios Nikolaos, so those two can be linked without a car. For Spinalonga, the island lies in the Gulf of Elounda, next to Plaka, and the lagoon is what you see from the harbor.

The Samaria Gorge is the outing where the setting shapes the day most. It is a National Park in the southwest, between the White Mountains and Mount Volakias, so what you plan is shaped by a protected landscape rather than a town.

Before you commit to any of these, work out where you are staying, which end of the island you want to see and how many miles sit between the two. The rest of the planning follows from that.

One more point about the starting place. Ferries from Piraeus to Chania or Heraklion depart daily at night and arrive early in the morning, so travelers who come that way begin the island in one of those two cities. Heraklion Airport, 3.1 miles east of the center of Heraklion, runs 24 hours a day, and it is the second busiest airport in Greece after Athens.

Good to know before you go

Crete is an island of long distances, so it pays to choose one corner for each day instead of crossing the whole 160 miles. Prices on the island are in euros.

Spend the middle of the day at a table, since a taverna lunch of dakos, kalitsounia or gamopilafo is part of what these outings are for. In the east, Elounda and its lagoon make a gentle end to a day that began in Agios Nikolaos.
