TAMPA · OCTOBER · THE MONTH GUIDE
Tampa in October is a warm-water month with some of the heat gone. The Gulf off the city is still swimmable, the afternoons have come down from September’s steam, and the sun sets just after seven. That leaves time for a Riverwalk stroll before a late dinner.
October also falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs to November 30, so the date comes with a condition attached. Our Florida orientation gives Tampa Bay three to five nights. Book them on refundable terms and every plan below stays open.

OCTOBER AT A GLANCE · TAMPA

NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals put the average October high at 85.6°F and the low at 69.2°F, with 2.34 inches of rain across the month. Every figure here comes from one real thermometer, station USW00012842 at Tampa International Airport, rather than a reanalysis grid cell. The gauge stands inland on the bay side, away from the Gulf beaches.
Measurable rain (0.10 inch or more) falls on 4.4 days in an average October, about one day in seven. A soaking of an inch or more averages 0.6 day a year, so in any given October it is closer to a coin toss than a given. On a week’s trip, plan for one wet day and keep an indoor option near your beach or river plan.
From the 69.2°F dawn to the 85.6°F afternoon, the thermometer swings 16.4°F. Pack shorts and sun protection for the day, a light long-sleeve layer for an early paddle or an evening on the water, and a compact umbrella for that one wet day.
On October 15 Tampa gets about 11 hours 32 minutes of daylight. Sunrise comes at 7:29 a.m. and sunset at 7:01 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, so outdoor plans run from half past seven to seven and dinner starts after dark.
Can you swim in Tampa in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine data puts the sea surface off Tampa at 79.7°F in October, averaged over 2015–2024. That number is the mean of each day’s warmest reading, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade lower, and early-morning water runs cooler than the headline figure.
The water sits 10.5°F above the average dawn low and 5.9°F below the afternoon high, so an early-afternoon swim gives the gentlest entry. Honeymoon Island State Park, on the Gulf northwest of Tampa, has one designated swimming area and 2,021 parking spaces. Keep in mind that the 79.7°F reading describes the sea off Tampa and was not taken at Honeymoon Island itself.
Our marine source gave us water temperature only, so we cannot give a wind speed or wave height for October. The weather risk we can date is tropical: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center counts October inside the June 1 to November 30 season and puts most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Check the forecast before each beach day, and read our Florida safety guide for storm basics.
How busy is Tampa in October? Crowds and prices
September 10, the hurricane season’s statistical peak, is behind you by October, but NOAA’s mid-August to mid-October stretch of heaviest activity still covers the first half of the month. We found no hotel occupancy or monthly room-rate series for Tampa, so we rank no October week as cheap or expensive.
We found no booking lead-time data either, so we give no count of weeks ahead. The practical rule comes from the storm calendar: reserve rooms and cars on refundable terms, and hold off on non-refundable extras until the forecast for your dates is out. Flights land at TPA, with routes and fare advice in our Florida flights guide.
Hotel bills in Tampa carry Hillsborough County’s 6.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid together with the 6% Florida state sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. We did not verify any other local surtax on rooms, so we give no all-in percentage.
Spend the extra on the cancellation clause. A refundable room or a flexible fare usually costs more than a locked-in rate, and inside hurricane season it is what lets you slide to November if a storm lines up with your dates. Our Florida trip-cost guide covers the rest of the budget.
Things to do in Tampa in October

Afternoons in October run 4.6°F cooler than September’s, at 85.6°F, while the sea off Tampa still averages 79.7°F against November’s 74.2°F. That pairing suits a river paddle in the morning and a Gulf swim or a long waterfront walk later in the day.
Hillsborough River State Park has 350 parking spaces, three canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail. Little Manatee River State Park offers 8.4 miles of trail, one launch and 109 spaces, and Alafia River State Park is smaller: 50 spaces, one launch, 1.2 miles of trail. In town, the 2.6-mile Tampa Riverwalk links Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Tampa Bay History Center and Water Works Park, and Ybor City Museum State Park has 311 feet of boardwalk. We could not read entrance fees or opening hours for any of them.
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park (255 parking spaces and one designated swimming area), Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (197 spaces) and Crystal River Preserve State Park (77) are all within reach of Tampa, and the water in all three holds its temperature year-round. The air above them changes: by the airport gauge, October afternoons average 85.6°F against 90.2°F in September. Those air normals were not measured at the springs, and we have no water reading for them.
The TECO Line Streetcar costs nothing to ride. It runs 2.7 miles from downtown Tampa through the Channel District to Ybor City every 15 minutes, and both HART and the City of Tampa publish the fare as free. Use it to reach Ybor City without parking, and check HART’s schedule for late-evening service, which we did not verify.
Tampa in October: a two-day itinerary
On day one, aim for Hillsborough River State Park soon after the 7:29 a.m. sunrise, while the air is nearer the 69.2°F low, and launch from one of its three put-ins (confirm opening hours with the park first). Drive back into town for lunch, then walk the Riverwalk from Water Works Park toward the Tampa Museum of Art as the afternoon climbs toward 85.6°F, with the museum as your shade stop. Stay on the river path for the 7:01 p.m. sunset, then board the free streetcar to Ybor City for dinner.
Give the second day to the Gulf at Honeymoon Island State Park: walk its 1,671 feet of boardwalk in the morning, then swim in the designated area in early afternoon, when the water is nearest its daily maximum. If the day turns wet (an average October brings 4.4 such days), stay in town. The Tampa Bay History Center and the Glazer Children’s Museum sit on the Riverwalk, Ybor City Museum State Park is a streetcar ride away, and a HART bus costs $2.00 a ride with the day capped at $4.00.
Tampa in October vs September and November
| Normal | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 90.2°F | 85.6°F | 78.9°F |
| Average low | 75.3°F | 69.2°F | 60.7°F |
| Precipitation | 6.09 in | 2.34 in | 1.40 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 8.2 | 4.4 | 2.3 |
| Sea off Tampa (daily max, 2015–2024) | 87.2°F | 79.7°F | 74.2°F |
Against September, October’s average high drops 4.6°F to 85.6°F, the low falls 6.1°F to 69.2°F, and rain shrinks from 6.09 to 2.34 inches over 4.4 wet days instead of 8.2. The sea off Tampa cools 7.5°F, from 87.2°F to 79.7°F. November continues the slide with highs of 78.9°F, lows of 60.7°F, 1.40 inches over 2.3 days and a sea of 74.2°F. Air figures are NOAA normals from the same airport station, and sea figures are Open-Meteo daily maxima for 2015–2024.
Move four weeks earlier, to September, and you gain a sea of 87.2°F but take 90.2°F afternoons, 6.09 inches of rain and the season’s September 10 peak. Move four weeks later, to November, and you give up 5.5°F of sea warmth in exchange for 2.3 rain days and 78.9°F walking weather, still inside a hurricane season that ends November 30.
Is October a good time to visit Tampa?
Yes, if you want warm-water beach days and river paddling without September’s heat, and you book refundable. Skip it if your dates are fixed and your bookings locked, since October sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season.
If the answer is no, pick November. Highs of 78.9°F, 1.40 inches of rain and 2.3 rain days make for easier outdoor days, and the hurricane season closes on November 30. You give up some swim warmth: the sea off Tampa averages 74.2°F, 5.5°F cooler than October. Tampa in November has the full picture.
Among September, October and November, only October pairs a sea off Tampa above 79°F with afternoon highs under 86°F.
The last word
Tampa in October comes down to one choice: take a flexible booking and a 79.7°F Gulf, or wait for November’s drier days and cooler water. If a cruise is part of the plan, the city works as a starting line. Port Tampa Bay homeports eight ships from five cruise lines, so you can fly into TPA, spend two October days on the Riverwalk and at Hillsborough River, and sail out from the same city.
