Corfu vs Zakynthos: Beaches, Old Town, Turtles and the Best Time to Go

On Corfu, the evening walk runs under the arcades of the Old Town, past stone-paved alleys and church bells, with a glass of ginger beer or a plate of pastitsada waiting at the end. On Zakynthos, the day is built around a boat, a rocky cove and a ship’s hull stuck in white sand. Both islands sit in the Ionian Sea, and the choice between them comes down to whether you want a town to wander or a coastline to chase.

Which is better, Corfu or Zakynthos?

Neither island wins outright, because they offer two different kinds of vacation. Corfu is a place for strolling streets and sitting on squares. Zakynthos is a place for getting out on the water.

Corfu is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands, and Zakynthos is the third largest of them, also known as Zante. Their histories overlap, since both lived under Venetian influence, but the legacy looks very different today. Corfu kept its old center. Zakynthos lost much of its Venetian architecture in a great earthquake, and the island’s appeal now lies largely in its coast.

Sights, beaches and food

Corfu’s great sight is the city itself. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its palaces, squares, churches and stone-paved alleys make it feel like a museum city where Greek and Western architecture sit side by side. The Palace of St. Michael and St. George, built from white Maltese stone, is one of the buildings that gives the waterfront its look, and the Venetian Old Fortress watches over the town.

The beaches of Corfu come in golden sand or white pebbles, which means the island suits both people who like to dig their toes into sand and people who prefer a pebbly entry to the water.

In the villages, the kitchen leans on island specialties such as pastitsada (pasta with slow-cooked meat in a spiced tomato sauce), sofrigito (veal in garlic and white wine), bourdeto (a peppery fish stew), and the local ginger beer called tzitzibira. Kumquats, grown on the island, end up in liqueurs and spoon sweets.

Zakynthos trades the old town for the sea. Its landscape alternates sandy beaches and tranquil coves with rugged coastline, marine caves and a rich underwater world.

Navagio is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece and can be reached only by boat, and the Blue Caves at Cape Skinari at the northern tip are also reached only by small boats. The Venetians called the island the flower of the East because of its many flowers, a name that still suits the island in spring.

The table on Zakynthos is made of sweet and salty island classics. The main town still carries the memory of the Heptanese School of poets and of Dionysios Solomos, who came from the island, and its squares are named for that literary heritage.

Who wins? For sights and food, Corfu: the Old Town is a destination in its own right, and few other Ionian places can match its collection of palaces, squares and churches.

If your idea of a perfect day is a long lunch followed by a walk through a town, pick Corfu. If it is a boat ride to a cove, pick Zakynthos.

Things to do

On Corfu, the days start in the capital. The Old Town is a maze of alleys and squares where you can spend hours without a plan, and the Spianada, the big green park by the old center, is a place for a slow stroll and a coffee.

Restoration work has been announced on the Ionian Parliament and the Spianada Park, so you may see scaffolding or works on some visits. The Old Fortress, a Venetian fortification in the city, gives the town its seaside backdrop.

Beyond the center, the Achilleion palace offers a panoramic view of Corfu city to the north and the southern part of the island, with the Ionian Sea framing it to the east. The ruins of ancient Korkyra, called Palaiopolis, lie at the site of the palace of Mon Repos, which was built on top of them.

Two Archaic temples from the ancient city add depth: the Temple of Artemis, known as the first Doric temple built exclusively of stone, and Kardaki Temple, considered the only Doric Greek temple without a frieze. For a taste of local life, the festivals and events held in the city, such as anniversary commemorations, show how much the island cares about its past.

On Zakynthos, the main event is the boat. Trips go out to Navagio, where the beach can be reached only by boat, and to the Blue Caves near Cape Skinari, where small boats slip under the rock arches and into the caves.

The water inside the caves is known for its color, and you may see it shift as the light changes. Snorkeling and swimming stops are part of what the boats offer, depending on the operator.

Wildlife is the other reason people come. Zakynthos is a vital haven for the loggerhead sea turtle and the Mediterranean monk seal, and the National Marine Park of Zakynthos lies in Laganas Bay. Gerakas Beach is closed at dusk because it is a loggerhead nesting beach, and some areas are off limits. That is a good reminder that here the beaches belong to the turtles first, and the visitors fit around them.

In the town of Zakynthos, you can wander squares and waterfront rebuilt after the earthquake, and listen for the island’s tradition of song and poetry. Compared with Corfu, there is less to see in the way of palaces and museums and more to do on the water. For a day trip beyond the island, a ferry from the port of Agios Nikolaos connects Zakynthos with Kefalonia.

Weather and the best time to go

Corfu has two very different seasons. January is a wet month in the Old Town, with rain falling on a good part of the days and temperatures that call for a warm layer and a rain jacket.

July is hot and almost dry, with sunshine most days and the evenings warm enough to eat outside. The figures for Corfu are in the table, and they explain why the island is a summer beach destination first and a winter city-break destination second.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (inches) Days with rain (at least 1 mm)
January 55.8 44.1 5.06 11.3
July 85.8 69.6 0.58 2.4

The air temperatures in the table are those of Aktion, on the mainland coast south-east of Corfu, while the rain figures are those of Corfu itself. In July, you want sun protection and a plan for the middle of the day, such as a swim or a long lunch indoors. In January, the Old Town’s arcades and museums are the better bet when the rain comes.

For Zakynthos, the season that stands out is spring. March to May is a particularly rewarding time to visit, with relatively few tourists, the Easter parade, and blooming flowers.

It fits the island’s old name, the flower of the East, and it gives you the landscape in bloom rather than in summer light. Since Holy Week and Easter move every year in the calendar, it is worth checking when they fall before you plan around them.

So the two islands give different answers. For a trip centered on the sea, Zakynthos in late spring puts you among flowers with fewer visitors.

For a trip centered on the town, Corfu works across more of the calendar because so much of what you do is under a roof or a stone arcade. If you want to swim, plan for the warm months on either island, and read the beach and boat conditions on the day.

Getting there and getting around

Corfu is the easier island to reach by air in the sense that the airport sits in Corfu Town itself, where most cruise ships and long-distance ferries also dock. Flights from Athens International Airport take 1 hour 15 minutes, and flights from Thessaloniki Airport take 55 minutes. That puts the arrival, the Old Town and the port in the same corner of the island.

Corfu is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands, off the far northwest coast of Greece, in the Adriatic Sea. Once you are there, the capital is the base for the Old Fortress, the Spianada and Mon Repos, while the Achilleion and the beaches lie elsewhere on the island. The coastline is varied enough that a day usually mixes a sight and a beach.

Zakynthos lies in the Ionian Sea around 12 miles west of the Peloponnese mainland. From the main port at Zakynthos town, a ferry connects the island to Kyllini on the mainland, and from the port of Agios Nikolaos another ferry connects it to Kefalonia. Those two lines are how the island links to the rest of the Ionian world by sea.

Navagio can be reached only by boat, and the Blue Caves near Cape Skinari only by small boats. The park at Laganas Bay and the turtle beaches are on the coast, and Gerakas Beach closes at dusk. Plan the day around the boat and the closing time rather than the other way round.

Who should choose which

Pick Corfu if you want a town to live in for a week. The Old Town, with its palaces, squares and churches, gives you something to see on a rainy day and something to eat on a warm evening.

Its beaches of golden sand and white pebbles give a choice to those who care about the surface under their feet.

Pick Zakynthos if the sea is the point. The boat trips, the caves, the cliffs and the turtles are the reasons to come, and spring brings flowers and the Easter parade with fewer visitors.

Treat the turtle beaches with care, since some close at dusk and some areas are off limits.

Combining the two means planning around the mainland, because the ferry connections given for Zakynthos lead to Kyllini and Kefalonia, and the flights given for Corfu go to Athens and Thessaloniki. A trip that takes in both usually works best as two separate stays linked through the mainland, with the town on Corfu and the coast on Zakynthos.

Good to know before you go

Both islands are used to visitors, and in both the habits of the place matter more than any rule. On Zakynthos, respect the closing of Gerakas Beach at dusk and the areas that are off limits, since they protect nesting turtles.

On Corfu, expect restoration work in parts of the Old Town and the Spianada. Euros are the currency on both islands. Spring suits Zakynthos, while Corfu rewards both summer beach days and the town in other months.
