Best Time to Visit Greece: September and Late May to Early June

For a first trip that pairs Athens with an island, go in September. By September the sea has soaked up a whole summer of sun, the main ferry routes still sail frequently, and the crowds ease as families go back to school. Late May to early June is the runner-up: green countryside, wildflowers and the start of the beach season.

When is the best time to visit Greece?

September feels like a gentler version of summer. Days stay hot, evenings turn cool enough to justify a sweater in the bag, and the water is warm for long beach afternoons. The most sought-after hotels in the Cyclades stay busy well into the month and sometimes into October, so book early.

The late-spring window suits travelers who care more about touring than swimming. The hills are green and dotted with flowers, the ancient sites are comfortable to walk, and the islands have opened for the season. The sea can still feel cool. The beach season that begins now generally lasts until early October.

The figures are for Athens.

Winter (December to February)

Days are cool and damp, and rain is frequent. Snow can fall in the mountains around Delphi and Meteora. Athens stays open for sightseeing through the winter, while many island resorts close for the season.

Spring (March to May)

March brings the start of spring, but it is still low season and many islands have yet to open. Attractions on the mainland are open and noticeably quieter than they become a few weeks later. April is excellent for sightseeing and hiking, with plenty of sun and mild days. In May the islands open fully for summer and the weather suits cities and islands alike, though the sea is still on the cool side.

Early summer (June)

Expect sun, warmth and very little rain. Festival season gets going around the country, including the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, which presents Greek drama, opera and dance in ancient and modern venues. Crowds build through the month, but June remains a very pleasant time to travel.

High summer (July and August)

Hot, dry and bright, with cities that can feel oppressive under the sun and sights that get extremely crowded. Extreme heat can close archaeological sites abruptly, so arrive at the earliest entry time and check the site's hours that morning. Forest fires are common in the dry months and occasionally close roads. Before heading out to the countryside, look at the Civil Protection daily risk map, and pay attention to local restrictions and any 112 evacuation alerts.

If strong winds are in the forecast, it helps to check with your ferry operator before you go to the port.

Fall (September to November)

September stays summery, the sea is at its best, and crowds ease in the second half of the month. October cools, rain starts to return, and leaves turn in the central and northern mainland. The islands wind down but usually stay open through the end of the month. Hotels on smaller resort islands may close sooner, so check closing dates alongside ferry schedules. November turns wet and quiet as island businesses close for winter.

When is Greece busiest, and when is it quiet?

This is also when island travelers find the most hotels and ferry departures to choose from, so it pays to reserve a particular room or sailing well in advance, especially if your dates are firm.

Around August 15, Greeks add to the rush. These homecomings explain why ferries can be full even to places off the usual resort routes. Try to buy tickets as soon as the schedule is published, especially if you are bringing a car.

Orthodox Easter is the other big moment. Its date can differ from Western Easter and usually falls in April or early May. Rooms fill in towns known for their Holy Week traditions, so book early and arrive before the weekend. On Good Friday, worshippers follow a flower-covered bier through the streets. At midnight on Holy Saturday, candles are lit and voices call out "Christos Anesti," meaning Christ is risen. By Sunday, families gather around tables of roast lamb.

The quiet months run from November to March, when city sights are pleasantly uncrowded. October is calmer too, as the islands begin winding down.

When is it cheapest to go?

November through March is generally the cheapest stretch, apart from Christmas and New Year's. International flights can cost far less than in high season, and hotel bills drop too.

For an island trip, look at May as well as late September and early October, when room rates can ease before seasonal businesses shut for the year. Factor in the connections while you compare hotels, because an added flight or a night spent between ferries can eat up the savings on the room.

Is Greece worth visiting in winter?

Yes, for a city trip. Museums in Athens and Thessaloniki stay open, neighborhood restaurants keep serving their local regulars, and the pace is relaxed. In the mountains, Athenians spend ski weekends in Arachova, below Parnassos Ski Centre, where tavernas serve grilled formaela, a peppery local cheese. Snow has become less dependable in Greece's mountains, so check lift conditions shortly before you leave and choose bookings you can change.

Which month is right for you?

  • Beach swimmers: September, after a full summer of sun has warmed the sea. July and August are warm too, but crowded.
  • Sightseers: April and May, when milder weather makes it easier to linger at open-air sites such as the Acropolis and the theater at Epidaurus.
  • Couples: September or late May, for quieter islands and evening strolls, with warmer water in September.
  • Budget travelers: November to March for cities, or the shoulder months for islands.
  • People who hate crowds: late April to late May, or the second half of September.
  • Wine lovers: fall, for harvest visits in northern Greece and the Peloponnese.

What should Americans know before traveling to Greece?

Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport previously reported lost or stolen will not get you in. Carry proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure in case you are asked. ETIAS, the European Union's planned travel authorization, is not up and running yet, so look at the official EU site before you leave for any new requirements.

To drive, Greek law requires a valid U.S. license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Thieves in Greece seek out rental cars and break into them to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so take those items with you rather than leaving them inside. Pickpocketing and purse-snatching occur at popular tourist sites and on public transportation, especially the metro. Strikes are common and can halt taxis, seaports and airports, so build some slack into ferry and flight connections.
