April is a lovely month for Greece if you like sunshine without the sweat. Days are mild, wildflowers are in bloom, and the big sites feel roomy. The sea is still chilly, so April suits sightseers more than swimmers.

What is the weather like in Greece in April?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainfall | Sunshine per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 63°F (17°C) | 48°F (9°C) | 1.6 in (41 mm) | 6.5 h |
| April | 70°F (21°C) | 54°F (12°C) | 1.2 in (31 mm) | 8.0 h |
| May | 80°F (27°C) | 62°F (17°C) | 0.8 in (19 mm) | 9.7 h |
The table covers Athens, the main gateway, so it gives a handy picture of the mainland and a starting point for planning elsewhere in the country.
April warms as it goes, and the second half is usually warmer than the first. Travelers who arrive early in the month often start out in a light jacket and stop needing it by the end of a two-week trip. Some afternoons turn almost hot, and the sun is intense even when the air feels mild, so a hat earns its place. Evenings still call for a light jacket.
Rain comes and goes. On some April trips it showers here and there without spoiling any sightseeing, and some couples see a single wet day in two weeks. Other travelers have hit days of heavy rain in late April and early May. Leave a little slack in the schedule so a wet morning doesn't cost you a site.
The sea is the catch. In April it's cold. Brave swimmers go in for a few minutes, find it refreshing once the first shock passes, then dry off happily in the sun.
How does April compare with March and May?
March is cooler and wetter, with shorter sunny spells, as the table shows. Tours that start at the very end of March can still find beautiful wildflowers and sunny, mild days.
May is warmer and drier. Rain stays possible until late May: one mid-May stay on Crete brought two days of miserable wind and rain.
June feels like full summer. Long hours at archaeological sites in full sun can be draining, Athens gets humid, and inland areas may run hotter than the city or the coast. People who live in Greece tend to call June through September too hot. If swimming is a must, June wins. If you want comfortable sightseeing, April does.
Is April a good time to visit Greece?
For most people, yes. Crowds are thin: on tours starting around April 20, the places on the route had few tourists, and even Athens didn't feel overrun. The Peloponnese stays calm too. Less heat and fewer people make a great combination.
April is the start of the tourist season, so the people who run the hotels and tavernas are still fresh and unhurried.
Orthodox Easter may land during an April trip, and it can be a highlight. Saturday night is when the big Easter celebrations happen, and sitting at a café while people head home from the services is a memorable way to take it in. Families celebrate together, and visitors can join a traditional Easter lunch. Western Easter can fall a week earlier, so some travelers catch both. The tradeoff is that the archaeological sites close on Easter, and itineraries get reshuffled; one tour group missed a mountain train ride because the schedule couldn't fit it in. May 1 is a national holiday as well, so a longer trip may need rearranging a second time.
What is there to do in Greece in April?
Sightseeing is the star. Cooler days make long hours among the ruins far more pleasant than in summer heat, and wildflowers color the countryside on the drives between sites.
Free afternoons can go to the coast, where swimmers have braved the water at Kardamyli and Hydra. If rain rolls in, a free day in a town like Nafplio still works: settle into a café with an awning and let the morning pass.
An April trip also extends well. One couple added three nights on Santorini after their tour and called it an awesome end to their stay, and another group came home so taken with Greece that they planned a trip to Crete the following year.
What should you pack for Greece in April?
Layers do the work. Bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings, T-shirts for warm afternoons, and a hat and sunscreen for the strong sun. Add a compact rain jacket in case of a wet spell, and comfortable walking shoes for ruins and hills. Swimwear and water shoes are worth tossing in if a quick, bracing dip appeals.
What do Americans need to enter Greece?
U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport you have reported lost or stolen will not get you in, even if you find it again. Be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure if asked.
Is Greece safe to visit in April?
Greece is a generally safe destination, though petty crime is common in popular tourist spots. Pickpockets and purse snatchers work the busy sites and public transportation, especially the Athens metro, so keep valuables close. Thieves in Greece are known to break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables, and luggage, so it's wise to keep those items with you. The State Department advises carrying a passport or some form of photo ID at all times in Greece, and Greek law requires drivers to have a valid U.S. license plus an international driving permit, even when the rental company doesn't ask to see the permit.
Strikes and demonstrations are common and can start with little notice. Transportation strikes interrupt traffic, public transportation, taxis, seaports and airports, so build a buffer day around important flights and ferries. When public transportation is running, buy and validate your ticket before you ride: traveling without a valid ticket can bring a fine of up to 60 times the basic fare.
