Key West vs South Walton: Weather, Beach Access Fees and Lodging Tax

Both are Florida, both sell white sand, and the resemblance stops at the water temperature. Key West is a city at the far end of the Overseas Highway, 113 miles of bridges past Florida City, with its own airport and Mile Marker 0 standing on a street corner downtown. South Walton is 26 miles of Gulf beach in the Panhandle, split into sixteen named neighborhoods along Scenic Highway 30A, with 63 public beach access points and fifteen coastal dune lakes sitting behind the dunes.

The month decides most of it. In January, Key West averages a high of 75.8°F with the sea at 76.5°F, while the station serving South Walton reports 63.1°F and water at 60.4°F. In July the two run within a degree of each other. The tax, the tickets and the rules all move far less than that.

The figures below come from NOAA station USW00012836 in Key West and station USW00053853 at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, plus one marine dataset for sea temperature. Both counties charge the same 5.0% lodging tax, so nothing in this comparison turns on that line.

Key West vs South Walton for a first beach week

For a first beach week, take South Walton. The reason is arithmetic: Walton County counts 26 miles of sand and 63 public beach access points, while Key West’s swimming beach is essentially one state park, Fort Zachary Taylor, at the edge of Old Town. If the week is built around towels, a cooler and a short walk to the water, the Panhandle takes it before the weather comes up.

Key West is the right call for the winter traveler, for the diver and for the walker. Between December and March its average high runs 75.8°F against 63.1°F at the Destin station. Dry Tortugas, 70 miles west and reachable only by ferry or seaplane, has no equivalent anywhere in our Gulf-side data. And Old Town, the largest wooden historic district in North America, is flat enough to carry an entire trip on foot.

The lodging tax does not sort them. Walton County and Monroe County each levy a 5.0% transient rental tax, filed with the same 6% state sales tax. Puts the ceiling at 11% either way. The hurricane calendar does not sort them either: June 1 to November 30 applies to both, peaking on September 10. Travelers also assume the Panhandle water is the colder one all year. In August the Gulf off South Walton averages 87.8°F against 88.8°F off Key West, a rounding error in a swimsuit.

Before booking, check your month against the sea column and let the rest wait. A South Walton trip in March meets 67.5°F water, which is a beach trip with no swimming in it. The same March in Key West meets 78.6°F. If the dates fall between May and September, that check comes out flat and the choice can be made on character.

Key West vs South Walton weather: temperature, rain and sea

From June through September the two places sit within about two degrees of each other at midday. Outside that window they stop resembling each other, and the gap widens every month on the way to January.

January is the extreme: 75.8°F against 63.1°F for the average high, a difference of 12.7 degrees, and 65.5°F against 45.3°F overnight, a little over twenty. By July the order flips faintly, with South Walton at 90.9°F and Key West at 90.2°F. The Destin station also records 3.2 nights at or below 32°F in an average January, plus 1.2 in December and 1.0 in February. The Key West series we hold carries no freeze count at all.

Water separates them harder than air. In January the sea off Key West averages 76.5°F and the Gulf off South Walton 60.4°F, sixteen degrees apart. Measured at the 78°F mark, the Key West swimming season opens in March, at 78.6°F, while South Walton reaches it in May, at 78.2°F. Both peak within a degree of each other in August, then part again: 84.2°F against 78.9°F in October, 81.2°F against 72.4°F in November.

Key West and South Walton weather averages

The Key West column comes from NOAA station USW00012836 at Key West International Airport, sitting on an island narrow enough that water surrounds the runway, which is a fair part of why its January nights average 65.5°F. The South Walton column comes from station USW00053853 at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, west of the 30A corridor rather than on the 30A beaches themselves. Nothing in our data measures Grayton Beach or Alys Beach directly, so read that side as a regional reading.

The rain-day columns compare cleanly. Both stations count a day when precipitation reaches at least 0.10 inch, both use the 1991-2020 normals period, and both come from the same NOAA NCEI release. Sea temperatures share a source too, the Open-Meteo Marine API averaged over 2015 to 2024 and taken as the mean of daily maxima, which runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean. Air and rain are station data. Sea is model data. Each is consistent across the two destinations, which is what makes a side-by-side worth reading.

Beach access fees and rules in Key West and South Walton

Key West’s beach day has a published price. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, the beach most often called the island’s best and walkable from Old Town, charges $6.00 per vehicle for up to eight people plus a $0.50 county surcharge per person, $4.50 for a single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle, and $2.50 on foot or by bicycle. The park runs 8 a.m. to sundown, 365 days a year. The fort inside it closes at 5 p.m., which catches people arriving for the late light.

For South Walton, our sources go as far as the count and no further. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection lists 26 miles of sandy beach, 63 public access points and five state parks in Walton County, among them Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach and Deer Lake. We did not find a published entry fee or a posted gate hour for those accesses in the documents we checked. That is a gap in our sourcing, not evidence that the county charges nothing.

The two days therefore prepare differently. In Key West a beach morning can be budgeted to the dollar before you leave the room, with the fort slotted in before five. In South Walton, check each park’s own page for its fee and hours before you drive out. One rule not to plan around: the passenger limits Key West voters approved in November 2020, a cap of 1,500 disembarking a day and a ban on ships carrying more than 1,300 people, were nullified by SB 1194, written to apply retroactively.

Lodging tax and ticket prices in Key West and South Walton

The lodging tax lands identically. Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid with the 6% state sales tax. Monroe County levies the same 5.0% on the same terms. The ceiling is 11% on either coast, and shopping between the two changes nothing about it. What moves a total is the room rate and the parking, not the county line.

Key West prices its landmarks in public. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum asks $19 for an adult and $7 for a child, free under 6, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. The Yankee Freedom III to Dry Tortugas runs about $250 for an adult in 2026, park entrance, snorkel gear, breakfast and lunch included, leaving at 8 a.m. with check-in before 7:30. Meters cost $3.00 an hour, the Mallory Square lot $7 an hour or $48 a day. We found no equivalent priced attraction for South Walton.

Neither side carries the number most travelers want ranked: a nightly rate. No lodging price series exists in the data behind either destination, so this comparison stops at taxes, tickets and parking and never says which one is cheaper to sleep in. Things to do in Key West vs South Walton

Key West carries the named things. Mile Marker 0 stands at Whitehead and Fleming, the southern end of a US-1 that runs roughly 2,370 miles north to Fort Kent, Maine. The Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square goes every night of the year, weather permitting, starting about two hours before sunset. Key lime pie is reported to have started on the island and was named Florida’s official pie in 2006. And the Duval Loop bus is free, calling at 18 stops through Old Town, though published timetables disagree and the airport is not on it.

South Walton answers with landscape instead of landmarks. Walton County holds all fifteen of Florida’s coastal dune lakes, a formation found in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Five state parks sit inside the county, including Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. The sixteen beach neighborhoods run from Miramar Beach to Inlet Beach along Scenic Highway 30A, designated a Florida Scenic Highway on April 9, 2008. Official documents give its length as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, so drive it rather than count it.

Key West or South Walton month by month: best time to visit

January splits them hardest: 75.8°F against 63.1°F at midday, 76.5°F against 60.4°F in the water, 3.3 rain days against 5.6. October reverses the rain column, with 7.6 wet days in Key West and only 3.5 in South Walton, both counted at the same 0.10 inch threshold. The last word

Decide on the month first, then on the water, and the rest follows. A swimming week in January belongs to Key West at 76.5°F, a walking-the-sand week belongs to South Walton and its 63 access points over 26 miles. November is the month nobody checks and the one we would book: 81.2°F water off Key West, 72.4°F off South Walton, 3.0 rain days against 4.3, and the Mallory Square sunset crowd still gathering two hours before the sun goes down, every single night of the year.
