Florida in November: Weather by City, Sea Temperature and Crowds

Florida in November is not one forecast but six. On the 15th of the month the sun sets at 5:30 p.m. over St. Augustine and at 5:41 p.m. in Key West, and between those two towns the average November night differs by nearly 21 degrees Fahrenheit. Four hundred and fifty miles of state will do that to a calendar.

What the month hands you: the opening page of the dry season, Atlantic water still at 82°F off Fort Lauderdale, and afternoons you can put on a schedule. What it takes back: nights cool enough in the center and the north to want a second layer, daylight that quits before six, and a hurricane season that runs on the calendar until the 30th.

Every figure here is a NOAA NCEI monthly normal for 1991-2020, read at a named airport station: Miami International, Key West International, Orlando International, Tampa International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, and Jacksonville International for the St. Augustine coast. These are gauges, not a model grid. The twelve-month view lives on the best time to visit Florida.

Florida weather in November: temperatures, rain and humidity by city

The structural fact of the state is the gap between its ends. Daytime highs separate by 8.1 degrees, 73.2°F at the Jacksonville gauge against 81.3°F at Miami International. Nights separate by far more: 51.3°F in the northeast, 72.2°F in Key West, a spread of 20.9 degrees inside one state line. A November trip planned on a single statewide number will be wrong by a jacket at one end or by nothing at all at the other.

Read across the six and the state sorts into three bands. Key West and the southeast coast hold summer’s shape with winter’s humidity, Miami and Fort Lauderdale landing within half a degree of each other by day. Orlando and Tampa share warm afternoons near 78°F with nights near 60°F. Is the classic central-Florida mismatch. St. Augustine sits alone at the cool end, and its gauge records 0.8 nights at or below 32°F in an average November.

Wet days are few and they arrive concentrated rather than gray. Fort Lauderdale counts 4.8 days with at least a tenth of an inch, Miami 4.7, and Tampa only 2.3. The heavier category is the one that cancels a plan: Miami averages 1.0 day of an inch or more, Fort Lauderdale 0.9, Tampa 0.4. In practice that is one soaked afternoon in a two-week trip, not a week of drizzle.

The day-to-night swing decides the suitcase. Orlando opens 20.1 degrees between its high and its low, St. Augustine 21.9, so a park morning or a north-coast dinner outdoors wants a fleece that the same trip’s beach afternoon will never see. Daylight on November 15 runs from 10 hours 41 minutes at St. Augustine to 10 hours 59 minutes in Key West. In Eastern Standard Time that means sunrise at 6:37 a.m. and sunset at 5:33 p.m. in Miami, sunset at 5:38 p.m. in Tampa, 5:41 p.m. in Key West. Anything you meant to do outdoors at six o’clock now happens at four.

Is November in Florida’s dry season or wet season?

November is the first month of the dry season. Statewide the dry run goes November through April and the wet one May through October, the split we use across the site and set out in the best time to visit Florida. The rain totals back it up: Tampa takes 1.40 inches for the whole month, Orlando 1.79.

For an afternoon, the change is the disappearance of the clock. Summer builds a thunderstorm most days between two and five. June is the wettest month at the Miami gauge at 10.51 inches. In November you can book a 3 p.m. boat, an outdoor table or an airboat slot and expect it to run. Mosquito pressure drops with the water table, which matters more in the Everglades than anywhere else in the state.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so November sits inside the window as a matter of calendar. The season’s peak is September 10, and NOAA places most activity between mid-August and mid-October, which puts the whole month past the active stretch. Neither of those sentences cancels the other, and both belong in the same paragraph.

At the booking stage that translates into two small habits rather than anxiety. Take the refundable rate for the first ten days of the month if the difference is a few dollars a night, and read the National Hurricane Center’s outlook rather than a forecast app in the week before you fly. A trip that starts December 1 is outside the season entirely, which is worth knowing if the calendar is flexible.

Can you swim in Florida in November? Sea temperature by coast

On the southeast Atlantic, yes, without discussion: 82.1°F off Fort Lauderdale, 81.7°F off Miami, 81.2°F off Key West. The Gulf reads differently, 74.2°F off Tampa, which is swimmable for most adults and a shock to nobody’s children after the first thirty seconds. The northeast Atlantic is the outlier at 72.7°F off St. Augustine, roughly 9 degrees below the water 350 miles south.

One qualifier on those water figures, because it changes how you read them. They are averages of DAILY MAXIMA over 2015 to 2024 from the Open-Meteo Marine model, a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean and not an official climate normal. Morning water sits below the number, late-afternoon water at or above it, and a ten-year run of years is a short one for an ocean.

How busy is Florida in November?

November is the ramp, not the summit. The state’s winter run begins as the dry season does, and the loudest weeks of the Florida year arrive later: the demand pattern we can cite puts the top of the market from February to April. Inside the month, the American holiday week at the end pulls hard on Orlando, the Gulf beaches and every flight into MCO and TPA.

The practical split is between the first three weeks and the last one. Early and mid-November midweek is the loosest part of the dry season for Keys guesthouses, Everglades-adjacent lodging and beachfront rooms, and the holiday week is the part to lock in months ahead if the trip includes theme parks. The pattern above is a hotel-market trend rather than an official statistic: rates run lowest from August to October and highest from February to April, which places November on the rising side of the curve without saying by how much. Things to do in Florida in November

The month buys a combination the rest of the year splits up. As the water table falls, Everglades wildlife concentrates around what is left of it, which is the argument for going now rather than in July, and the same falling water takes the mosquitoes down with it. Meanwhile the southeast sea is still at 82°F, so a wildlife morning and a real swim fit in one day. August offers the second half of that and none of the first.

Named and priced: Everglades National Park charges $35.00 per private vehicle for seven days, with its three entrances at least an hour’s drive apart, so pick one. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Coconut Grove opens Wednesday to Monday from 9:30 a.m., last admission 4:30 p.m., closed Tuesdays, $20 adult during restoration and $5 for ages 6 to 12. The Pérez Art Museum Miami is free Thursdays 5 to 9 p.m. and all day on the second Saturday. The Miami Beach trolley is free, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Where to go in Florida in November: best regions and cities

The southeast wins the month on the numbers. Fort Lauderdale at 80.8°F by day with 82.1°F water, Miami at 81.3°F with 81.7°F water, and nights at 68.3°F in both, which is the temperature at which an outdoor dinner needs no plan B. Parking is the friction rather than the weather: Crandon Park on Key Biscayne charges $7 on weekdays and $10 at weekends, and Lummus Park, the beach fronting Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th, is free and open around the clock.

The northeast coast loses, and only for one kind of traveler. At 72.7°F water and 51.3°F nights, a beach-first week around St. Augustine is a compromise this month. For anyone whose plan is a walled Spanish old town on foot, 73.2°F afternoons and 3.9 wet days are close to ideal walking weather, and the 0.8 freezing nights are a jacket problem, not a trip problem.

The Keys follow neither the north nor the center. Key West holds 81.0°F by day and 72.2°F at night, 2.05 inches of rain across the month and 3.0 wet days, so nights there run 20.9 degrees above Jacksonville’s while rain runs below Miami’s. The catch is the road, not the sky: the Overseas Highway is a full day each way when driven properly, as the road trip guide spells out.

If you read one line: south of Miami for swimming, the central Gulf around Tampa and St. Pete for beach mornings in 74.2°F water with museum afternoons, and the northeast for walking a historic town in a light jacket. Trying to do all three in a week is how a Florida trip goes wrong, which is why the seven-day itinerary picks a lane.

Florida in November vs October and December

Across the three, the temperature line falls and the water line falls with it. Miami runs 81.3°F by day in November and about 76°F in December, with the sea off Miami settling near 72°F through the winter after November’s 81.7°F. October keeps the heat and the storm calendar together, since NOAA’s most active stretch runs to mid-October, and the wet season does not close until the 31st.

Shift four weeks either way and the trade is clear enough. Going back to October buys warmer water and the last of the summer evenings, and pays for it with afternoon storms and the tail of the active season. Going forward to December buys a closed hurricane season, since the calendar ends November 30, and pays with roughly five degrees off Miami’s afternoons, water down near 72°F and the holiday weeks pulling on every beach town.

Swimmers and Everglades visitors are best served by November. Anyone who wants the storm calendar shut before they board should take December and accept cooler water. Travelers whose only free window is October should keep the booking refundable and plan indoor alternates for the two-to-five slot. Is when the wet season does its work.

Is November a good time to visit Florida?

For a south Florida trip, it is close to the best month the calendar sells: 82.1°F water off Fort Lauderdale, 4.7 wet days at Miami, mosquitoes falling with the water table, and the winter crowd peak still three months out. It is a weaker month for a north-coast beach holiday, with a 72.7°F sea and nights at 51.3°F, and a busy one for anyone who can only travel during the holiday week at the end.

If that lands on the wrong side for you, December keeps the dry season and closes the storm calendar at the cost of about five degrees in Miami, and later in the dry run the water climbs back while the crowds do too. Match the month to the region rather than the reverse, and let the twelve-month view settle the rest.

The last word

Decide your latitude first and the rest of November falls into place: everything south of Miami swims, everything north of Orlando walks. Then use the thing nobody budgets for. Is the sunset at 5:33 p.m. in Miami and the free Metromover under it, running every 90 seconds at rush hour through Downtown and Brickell while the light goes orange over Biscayne Bay.
