Where to Go in July: 14 Trips, from the Algarve to Patagonia in Winter

Two July trips sit almost seventy degrees apart. Fly to Luxor and you land in 105.1°F afternoons with 0.00 inch of rain in the monthly normal; fly to El Calafate the same week and you pull on a hat at 35.6°F, with 8 hours 31 minutes of daylight to hike in. Both are ordinary July vacations, booked from the same country, in the same four weeks. The month does not have a character. It has hemispheres, and it has a monsoon.

Most of the choosing has already been done for you by the calendar. Northern daylight peaked in late June, so Iceland’s 19 hours 50 minutes on July 15 is a number on the way down, while Patagonia’s 8 hours 31 minutes is climbing back from the southern solstice. Nothing in the Mediterranean summer has started to close: the water off Crete reads 80.8°F this month.

Where is it driest in July? the Algarve, Lisbon and Crete

If a rain plan would ruin the trip, four of the fourteen options here take rain off the table. The Algarve records 0.02 inch across the whole of July, San Diego 0.08, Lisbon 0.09, Crete 0.10. Those are month totals, not daily figures.

What separates the four is heat and water. You swim at 80.8°F on Crete and at 66.8°F in the Algarve, and you sleep through 72.3°F nights on one and 66.1°F nights in San Diego. Choose by how you want the afternoons to feel, because the sky behaves the same way in all four.

The Algarve

Nine nights (est.) is the usual shape of the trip, flown nonstop from the East Coast to Lisbon and driven under three hours south (est.). The rain figure is worth keeping unrounded: 0.02 inch for the month, and 0.1 of a day reaching a tenth of an inch, or one such day every ten Julys.

The water reads 66.8°F, warm enough for a swim and cool enough that you dry off in minutes. Guarded beaches along the coast are staffed through July, so a trip with small swimmers does not have to audit which cove has a flag. The month cove by cove sits in the Algarve in July.

Lisbon

Two and a half hours up the road (est.), Lisbon knocks 3.7°F off the nights: 64.3°F against the Algarve’s 68.0°F, and that gap is exactly what you feel at 2am in a top-floor apartment with no air conditioning. Four nights (est.) covers the city, on 0.09 inch of rain and a 66.7°F ocean at Carcavelos. The regional split runs through Portugal in July, the city itself through Lisbon in July.

Crete

A week (est.) on Crete costs a day of travel at each end, since no flight runs nonstop from the US and you connect through Athens or a European hub. What the week buys is an 80.8°F sea, 0.3 of a rain day and afternoons at 88.2°F. July is also the school-holiday window on both sides of the Atlantic, so a car and a room booked far ahead do more for the trip than any forecast. We hold no July visitor counts, so read that last line as judgment.

San Diego

San Diego is the dry trip that never turns uncomfortable: 0.08 inch of rain, one day in ten Julys reaching a tenth of an inch, and afternoons that stop at 75.3°F. It also carries the only figures here read from a weather station rather than a model grid, station USW00023188 at the airport. Five nights (est.), a domestic flight, and a 70.4°F Pacific that visitors from Florida call cold.

Is July too hot for Upper Egypt and the Southwest?

Three of these trips run hotter than most travelers plan for, and one of them runs hotter than most should attempt. Upper Egypt averages 105.1°F by afternoon and 76.2°F overnight, with 0.00 inch in the monthly normal and not a single day that reaches a tenth of an inch.

The Southwest sits lower without sitting low: Sedona at 91.2°F, Zion at 87.4°F. Both drop overnight, to 66.9°F and 64.1°F, and that overnight recovery is the whole argument for standing at a trailhead before six in the morning.

Upper Egypt

This is the top of the year at Karnak and in the Valley of the Kings, and the sky contributes nothing to it: zero measurable rain, zero cloud budget in the normal. Four nights (est.) is enough for the West Bank and the temples, flown via Cairo (est. 11h from New York) plus a short domestic hop.

The playable hours sit either side of a 13-hour-38-minute day: monuments from opening until about nine, a long afternoon indoors, a felucca at dusk. Travelers with young children, anyone who walks slowly in heat, and anyone whose whole trip hangs on one morning at the tombs should take the month off and go in winter instead.

Zion

July turns Zion into a sunrise park. The good version of the day starts at 64.1°F on the first shuttle and is finished by the time the canyon hits 87.4°F, with the Narrows keeping you knee-deep in the meantime. Rain totals 0.35 inch over 0.8 day, small enough to ignore when packing and never when planning a slot canyon. Three nights (est.), about two and a half hours from Las Vegas (est.).

Sedona

Sedona runs both warmer and wetter than Zion: 91.2°F days, 1.08 inch over 2.9 rain days. That rain is the summer monsoon, delivered in afternoon cells, so the hiking gets done early and the red rock earns its photographs when the sky breaks open again. Four nights (est.), two hours north of Phoenix (est.).

Where does it rain most in July? Kyoto, Bangkok and the Yucatán

Some of the best trips available in July are wet ones, and the figures say how wet. Kyoto takes 9.30 inches of rain across the month, the highest total of the fourteen, spread over 12.9 days that reach a tenth of an inch.

Bangkok runs the opposite arithmetic: 5.43 inches, but 16.6 wet days, more than half the month. The Yucatán lands between them at 4.47 inches over 11.3 days, with nights that never fall below 78.9°F in the normal.

Kyoto

Five nights (est.) in Kyoto in July buys temples, a river valley and the wettest weather on this list: 9.30 inches, 12.9 rain days, and afternoons at 85.0°F that never cool past 72.1°F. Flights run nonstop from the West Coast to Osaka (est. 11h), then 75 minutes by train (est.).

One ratio explains the month better than any adjective. Kyoto’s July rain comes to 465 times the Algarve’s 0.02 inch, in the same four weeks of the same year. A trip built on covered arcades, museums and a 6am walk up Fushimi Inari survives that. A trip built on outdoor afternoons does not.

Bangkok

Look at Bangkok’s 16.6 wet days before you look at its 5.43 inches. Rain will touch most days of a four-night stay (est.) without taking any of them, since the city runs indoors, on rail lines and in air conditioning. The 78.0°F nights are what travelers underestimate: nothing here cools down after dark.

The Yucatán

The Yucatán offers the warmest swimming of the fourteen, an 85.9°F sea under 85.9°F air, about four hours nonstop from the East Coast (est.). The nuance is the night, which stops at 78.9°F, so a fan-only room stops being charming by day three. Add 11.3 wet days and the storm season, laid out by month in our risk-by-month guide, and a seven-night beach booking (est.) becomes a bet worth pricing.

Where is it winter in July? Patagonia, Buenos Aires and Cape Town

Below the equator July is deep winter, and three trips here are in it: Patagonia at 35.6°F by day and 28.7°F at night, Buenos Aires at 56.3°F, Cape Town at 61.7°F, none of them with more than 10 hours 9 minutes of daylight to work with.

Patagonia

El Calafate in July stands 69.5°F below Upper Egypt, the two ends of this list on the same week of the same calendar. Precipitation is modest at 1.93 inches over 6.0 days, and much of it falls as snow. Six nights (est.) via Buenos Aires (est. 11h from Miami, then a three-hour domestic flight). Perito Moreno is still calving. What July takes is daylight, and what it demands is real cold-weather kit.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires spends the month at 56.3°F and 45.8°F, with 2.96 inches over 5.5 days. Fill it with parrillas, bookshops and a night at the Colón rather than a beach, and let the 10 hours 7 minutes of light dictate an unhurried start. Four nights (est.) pairs neatly with the Patagonian leg, since the flight south leaves from here anyway.

Cape Town

61.7°F days, 48.7°F nights · 6.7 rain days · 10h 09m of daylight on July 15 · $$$

July is the Cape’s wet season: 3.31 inches over 6.7 days, on 61.7°F afternoons. The sea reads 57.6°F, cold enough to rule out swimming for all but the committed. Six nights (est.) on a long-haul routing still works if the itinerary leans on the winelands, the museums and Table Mountain for the clear days, with the wet ones planned rather than absorbed.

Is July a good time for Iceland?

Iceland in July reads 58.0°F by day and 48.0°F at night, with 19 hours 50 minutes of daylight on the 15th. Neither number is what most travelers picture when they book a northern summer.

Iceland

Rain lands on 10.2 days and totals 3.38 inches, and 58°F with wind behind it is not sitting-outside weather. What the light changes is the shape of the itinerary: eight nights (est.) around the ring road can hold a 9pm waterfall and a midnight harbor, and a washed-out morning gets recovered the same evening. Nonstop from Boston or Newark in about 5h30 (est.).

July also puts every road, hut and boat schedule in service at once, which is the real access argument for the month. Since we hold no visitor counts, our crowd advice stays procedural: reserve cars and rooms early, start hikes before eight, and save the roadside stops for the long light after 8pm. The 53.4°F sea is for the geothermal pools’ benefit, not for swimming.

Best July destinations for sun, dry heat or a cool escape

Start from the constraint that would ruin the trip. Rain intolerance points to the Algarve, Lisbon, San Diego or Crete, each under half a day of measurable rain. Heat intolerance rules out Upper Egypt’s 105.1°F outright and shrinks Sedona and Zion to their first three hours of light. Cold tolerance opens Patagonia, where 28.7°F nights are the entry fee for a glacier in winter.

Then decide what the water has to do. Swimming trips work at 85.9°F in the Yucatán and 80.8°F on Crete, stay tolerable at 70.4°F in San Diego and 66.8°F in the Algarve, and stop at 57.6°F off Cape Town and 53.4°F off Iceland.

Last, count your nights. Four (est.) is enough for Lisbon, Luxor, Buenos Aires or Bangkok. Seven or more (est.) is the working minimum for Crete, the Yucatán, Patagonia and Iceland, since two travel days come off the top of each. And if crowding is the deciding factor, all we can offer is procedure, because July is the school-holiday window in both Europe and North America: book those four first, and everything else after.

Where to go in July: the Algarve, Lisbon or Crete

A monthly average describes a July afternoon badly. Upper Egypt’s 105.1°F is a mean, so half the days beat it. Sedona’s 2.9 rain days do not spread evenly, they cluster into monsoon cells. Kyoto’s 12.9 days can arrive as one stalled front over a long weekend. The sea columns are means of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024, the warmest reading of each day rather than a 24-hour figure, so take a degree or two off before calling 66.8°F swimmable. Budget tiers, $ to $$$$, are relative July signals, not quotes.

The last word

If July is your only window and you refuse to negotiate with weather, book the Algarve for nine nights (est.) and accept a 66.8°F sea as the price of 0.02 inch of rain. One figure has gone unused until now: on July 15 the sun stands up for 19h 50m over Reykjavík and 8h 31m over El Calafate, eleven hours and nineteen minutes apart, for two trips that leave the same Saturday.
