Madeira vs the Azores: Weather by Month, Trail Fees and Tourist Tax

Two Portuguese archipelagos in the Atlantic, both volcanic, both green all year, and one decision most travelers end up making on a hunch. The measurements make it easier than that. At the coast, Funchal is warmer and drier than Ponta Delgada in all twelve months, and in January the difference runs to 4.5°F on the daytime high and nearly seven rain days.

What the Azores hold instead is not weather. It is water full of animals: more than 20 cetacean species, roughly a third of all that exist, in one of the largest whale sanctuaries on the planet, plus a thermal valley at Furnas and tea fields picked since 1883. Madeira replies with a numbered network of levadas and veredas that, since January 1, 2026, has to be paid for and booked.

Both climate series come from the Portuguese national weather service, the same 1991-2020 period and the same 1 mm rain-day threshold, one measured at Funchal and one at Ponta Delgada. Latitude does less than travelers expect: on January 15, Funchal gets 10 hours 17 minutes of daylight and Ponta Delgada 9 hours 53 minutes, 24 minutes apart.

Madeira or the Azores

For a standard one-week trip, and for most first-timers: Madeira. It is the warmer and the drier of the two at the coast in every month of the year, by 4.5°F on the January high (68.0°F against 63.5°F) and by 6.8 rain days in that same month (6.2 against 13.0). The sea follows the air: 68.6°F off Madeira in January against 63.3°F off São Miguel. Add a cable car, two gardens and a trail network within reach of one base, and the week fills itself.

Choose the Azores if the reason for the trip sits in the water or under the ground. Whale and dolphin watching runs all year, with blue whales easily spotted at the end of winter, sperm, sei and baleen whales frequent in summer, and resident common and bottlenose dolphins that visitors are allowed to swim with. Furnas holds dozens of springs and fumaroles. Gorreana and Porto Formoso are tea plantations unique in Europe. July argues for the Azores too: the highs are 1.2°F apart that month, the smallest gap of the year.

The belief that one is mild and the other cold does not survive the figures. Neither station records a monthly average high below 63.3°F, and neither climbs above 80.2°F, so these are two narrow oceanic years rather than a warm island and a cool one. In August the Azores sea is the warmer of the pair, 77.0°F against 76.6°F, and in September the two are 0.8°F apart. Both municipal taxes exempt visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more.

One thing to settle before booking: whether the week includes classified trails. In Madeira each of them now costs EUR 4.50 a person and must be reserved online through SIMplifica, in 30-minute entry slots that run from sunrise to sunset, and each trail carries its own status. PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were both restricted on September 8, 2026. On the Azores side, the item to get in writing is the Ponta Delgada tourist tax, whose official rate sheet sits behind a login.

Madeira vs Azores weather: temperature, rain and sea

Funchal records fewer rain days than Ponta Delgada in all twelve months, and the narrowest of those gaps is still 4.5 days, in July and again in November. The widest is January, 6.2 days against 13.0. Precipitation totals say it from the other end: 6.02 inches at Ponta Delgada in December against 3.73 inches at Funchal.

Temperature separates the two far less. The high-summer difference is 1.2°F in July, 77.7°F against 76.5°F, and 1.4°F in August. The gap opens in the second half of the year and peaks in November at 5.2°F, 73.0°F against 67.8°F, with March and December close behind at 4.9°F. Anyone deciding on the thermometer alone is choosing between two versions of the same mild year.

The sea is where a swimmer feels the choice. Off Madeira it stays at or above 66.9°F all year, bottoming out in March. Off São Miguel it falls to 61.9°F in that same month and does not clear 70°F until July, when it reaches 73.1°F. Both marine series are means of daily maxima over 2015-2024, a shade warmer than a 24-hour average, so treat them as the top of the day rather than the water at eight in the morning.

Madeira vs Azores weather by month: Funchal and Ponta Delgada

Madeira’s figures come from IPMA station 522 at Funchal, a real thermometer 58 meters above the sea on the island’s south coast. The Azores’ come from station 513, the Ponta Delgada observatory, 35 meters up on the south coast of São Miguel. On islands this vertical, that matters: high ground is colder and far wetter than either reading, and Pico da Vara rises to 1,105 meters on the same island as the observatory. Pack for a coastal town and you have packed for neither summit.

The rain-day counts compare most cleanly, because they share one service, one 1991-2020 period and one threshold: a day counts when it records at least 1 mm, 0.04 inch. The heavier threshold is shared too, 10 mm or 0.39 inch, which gives 3.5 such days at Funchal in December against 4.5 at Ponta Delgada. A caution for American readers: US tables usually count days at 0.10 inch, so these totals are not interchangeable with a domestic forecast page.

Booking hikes in Madeira and the Azores: permits and rules

The dated rule is Madeira’s. Since January 1, 2026, every classified walking trail on the island, every PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee and requires a booking: EUR 4.50 a person for the general public and for visitors with a tourism company that holds no protocol with the IFCN, EUR 3 with a company that does, and nothing for residents of the Autonomous Region. Booking happens online only, through the regional portal SIMplifica, and it covers individuals, groups and guided walkers alike.

For the Azores we found no equivalent fee-and-booking rule in the official regional sources we read, and that is a statement about our sources rather than about Azorean trails. Visit Azores documents whale watching down to a recommended minimum age of five and says nothing about slots for hiking. We would rather report the hole than fill it, so confirm with the operator or the regional portal before you count on walking a marked trail without paperwork.

In practice that reshapes a Madeira day. You pick an entry time from 30-minute slots running sunrise to sunset, so the month decides how many slots exist: Funchal has about 10 hours 4 minutes of daylight on December 15 and 14 hours 20 minutes on June 15. Then you check each trail one by one. On September 8, 2026, PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro, PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo, PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, PR 6.1 Levada do Risco and PR 3.1 Caminho Real do Monte were all open.

Madeira and Azores tourist tax and ticket prices

Two municipal taxes, and it is the cap that decides the bill. Funchal charges EUR 2 per person per night up to 7 consecutive nights, EUR 14 a guest at most, restarting after an interrupted stay, with children of 12 and under exempt on production of an ID. Ponta Delgada has levied a municipal tax since January 2025; the rate relayed by press and host guides is EUR 2 a night for guests of 13 and over, capped at 3 nights, about EUR 6. Porto, for scale, charges EUR 3 up to 7 nights.

The named tickets sit mostly on the Madeira side. The Funchal to Monte cable car costs EUR 22 return and EUR 16 one way, half price from 7 to 14. The Monte wicker sledges are EUR 30 for one rider, EUR 40 for two and EUR 60 for three, sold on site for the same day only, and no three-person ride runs on wet ground. Monte Palace Tropical Garden asks EUR 18 for an adult. In the Azores, Terra Nostra Park at Furnas runs about EUR 16 for a visiting adult against about EUR 12.80 for a resident.

What neither side of this comparison carries is the price of a bed. No official series covers hotel or guesthouse rates on Madeira or in the Azores, so there is no ranking here of which archipelago costs less, and no flight fares either. Whale trips are priced operator by operator and we found no official rate on the regional tourism pages we read. Taxes and named tickets are the only money the two can be set beside each other on.

Things to do in Madeira vs the Azores: levadas, whales and hot springs

A Madeira day is built on trails with numbers: PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, PR 6.1 Levada do Risco, PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro, PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo. Around Funchal, the cable car climbs to Monte from 08:45 to 17:45 every day but December 25, the wicker sledges are pushed by two carreiros in white, and Monte Palace spreads 70,000 square meters of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum. The Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira, at Bom Sucesso, holds more than 2,000 exotic species.

The Azores answer with animals and hot water. The archipelago is one of the largest whale sanctuaries in the world, with more than 20 cetacean species recorded, about a third of those that exist, and a trip out lasts roughly three hours. Furnas holds dozens of springs, fumaroles and carbonated water, with named bathing spots: Poça da Beija, and the Caldeiras of Ribeira Grande, whose thermal building dates from 1811. Gorreana has grown tea since 1883. The set pieces are crater lakes seen from lookouts, Sete Cidades from Vista do Rei and the higher Lagoa do Fogo.

Best time to visit Madeira and the Azores by month

November is the month that splits them furthest. Funchal averages a 73.0°F high with 7.3 rain days and a 73.0°F sea, while Ponta Delgada averages 67.8°F with 11.8 rain days and a 68.4°F sea, a 5.2°F gap in the air and 4.6°F in the water. July is the month that splits them least, 77.7°F against 76.5°F. The detail of each sits in Madeira in November and the Azores in November.

The last word

Pick the spine of the week first: coastal walking with a booked slot, or three hours at sea watching for a blow. The month then falls out of that choice, and the national calendar handles the rest of the country. One last figure for the São Miguel side: the island runs 62.1 km long and 15.8 km at its widest, 744.7 square kilometers in all, and more than half of all Azoreans live on it, 137,856 at the 2011 census. Ponta Delgada has been its capital since 1546, after an earthquake destroyed Vila Franca do Campo in 1522.
