Madeira in June: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Trail Bookings

You have picked Madeira, and June decides how the trip feels. The island sits in the longest days of the year, Funchal’s port handles a fraction of its winter cruise traffic, and the coastal afternoons have settled into the mid-70s. The open questions are the sea, the trail bookings, and whether May or July would suit you better.

Flights land at Madeira airport, and our guide to flights from the US has the routes. From the terminal, the Aerobus runs 08:30 to 22:00 on a 26-stop line through Funchal to Praia Formosa, 50 minutes end to end, with fewer departures on Sundays and holidays. We could not find a fare printed on the regional government’s timetable, so we give none. The operator answers on 291 201 151.

Go for: levada and peak walking on the longest days, gardens on their summer hours, and a Funchal waterfront with about a tenth of February’s cruise passengers.

Think twice before: planning a swim-first vacation, since the sea averages 71.6°F on daily maxima in June against 75.0°F in July.

Since January 1, 2026, every classified trail on the island, every PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee and needs an online booking through SIMplifica, the regional government’s portal. The general fee is EUR 4.50 per person, or EUR 3 if you walk with a tourism company that holds a protocol with the IFCN. Residents of the region pay nothing. Entry comes in 30-minute slots from sunrise to sunset, so June’s daylight sets how many slots a trail can sell.

Madeira weather in June: average highs, lows and rain days

June at Funchal Value
Average high 74.7°F
Average low 64.8°F
Precipitation 0.31 in

Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more 0.2
Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) 71.6°F

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service: 1991-2020 normals from station 522 in Funchal, a real thermometer at 58 meters (190 feet) on the south coast, not a model grid cell. June averages a high of 74.7°F, a low of 64.8°F and 0.31 inches of rain. Those numbers describe Funchal, not the island. High ground is colder and far wetter, and the far end of a coast keeps its own weather, so pack for a mountain trail from something other than a coastal reading.

Measurable rain, 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, falls on 1.0 day in an average Funchal June. A soaking of 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more comes on 0.2 day, roughly one June in five. In town, a week can easily pass without a wet day. IPMA counts from its own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch cutoff American almanacs use, so its rain days do not line up with a US chart.

The average high and low sit 9.9°F apart at Funchal, so a light sweater covers a coastal evening. The trails ask for more. PR1 runs between 1,857 and 1,491 meters (about 6,090 and 4,890 feet), far above the station, and our packing list has the warm layer and rain shell for that altitude.

On June 15 Madeira gets about 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight. Sunrise-sunset.org gives 05:58 and 20:18 UTC, and the island runs one hour ahead of UTC in summer, so the sun rises at 06:58 and sets at 21:18 local time. A trail slot booked for 18:00 still leaves more than three hours of light.

Can you swim in Madeira in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s marine data put the sea surface off Madeira at 71.6°F in June, averaged over 2015 to 2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. Sources that average all 24 hours will give a lower June number, and both can be right.

For a swimmer, 71.6°F is 3.1°F below Funchal’s average afternoon air and 1.7°F above May’s water. Expect a brisk first minute, then water you can stay in. The volcanic pools at Porto Moniz on the north coast fill with the same Atlantic, and the serviced complex keeps its summer hours, 09:00 to 19:00.

We could not verify a June wind or swell reading from our sources, so we give no wave height and no wind speed. Check IPMA’s forecast on the morning of a sea swim or a north-coast drive. If anyone gets into trouble in the water, call 112, the emergency number across Madeira, Portugal and the EU.

How busy is Madeira in June? Crowds and prices

APRAM, the regional port authority, counted 113,839 cruise passengers in Funchal in February 2026 against 10,816 in June, roughly one for every ten. Its 2025 series has the same winter-heavy shape. On hotels we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data, so we call June neither cheap nor expensive. What the port counts do show is a waterfront spared winter’s big cruise mornings.

We found no data on how many weeks ahead Funchal rooms fill in June, so we give no lead time. Trail slots go only through SIMplifica, for individuals, groups and guided walkers alike. A cable car e-ticket stays valid for 60 days, so it can be bought at home. Blandy’s asks you to book its tours ahead and cancels free up to 24 hours out. The Monte sledges cannot be booked at all: tickets sell on site, for the same day only.

Funchal adds a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid stay in the municipality whatever the booking site, and it starts again if your stay is interrupted. Children of 12 and under with ID pay nothing, as do people with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the region.

The spend that changes a June trip is the trail pass. A day pass covering two trails or more costs EUR 9.00, three days EUR 22.50 and seven days EUR 52.50, against EUR 4.50 for a single trail. The day pass matches two single fees and pays off from the third trail. PR1 sits outside it at EUR 10.50. With slots running 06:58 to 21:18 on June 15, a day holds roughly 28 half-hour entry times (est.), enough for a morning trail and an evening one.

Things to do in Madeira in June

June’s long days let one date hold a high trail and a coastal afternoon. Funchal’s 1.0 rain day, against 3.3 in May, also matters in Monte: no three-person sledge runs in rain or on wet ground, and the office can close early when the weather turns.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden, at the top station of the Funchal-Monte cable car, spreads 70,000 square meters (about 753,000 square feet) of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, for EUR 18 an adult. The cable car costs EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way and runs 08:45 to 17:45. The wicker sledges cost EUR 30 for one, EUR 40 for two and EUR 60 for three, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00. Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga runs a 45-minute Premium Tour at EUR 23 with three Madeira wines. The serviced Porto Moniz pools cost EUR 3.

Summer timetables apply in June. Monte Palace stays open 09:00 to 19:00 from April to September, though the museum inside closes at 17:00. The Cabo Girão skywalk, a glass platform on the sea cliff above Câmara de Lobos, opens 08:30 to 20:00 from March to October for EUR 3, a fee and timetable we could not check against an official page, so confirm them on site. It closes 78 minutes before the June 15 sunset. On the coast the air averages 74.7°F against a 71.6°F sea, a small gap for a pool afternoon at Porto Moniz.

The Cachalote pools beside the Porto Moniz complex are free and open at all hours. At Monte Palace, children up to 14 enter free with an adult. Kids of 12 and under walk PR1 and stand on the Cabo Girão skywalk for nothing, and under-6s ride the cable car free, with 7-to-14s at half price.

Madeira in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one, on a weekday: be at the Mercado dos Lavradores when it opens at 07:00 (it closes at 14:00 on Saturday and all day Sunday). Take the first cable car at 08:45 and walk Monte Palace from its 09:00 opening while the garden is quiet. Ride a sledge down late morning. After lunch in town, join Blandy’s 15:00 or 16:00 English Premium Tour. Drive west to Cabo Girão before its 20:00 close, then stay on the coast for the 21:18 sunset.

On day two, book an early SIMplifica slot for PR1 from Pico do Areeiro: 6.1 km (3.8 miles) one way, about 3 hours, rated Moderate. Past the Pedra Rija viewpoint the route runs one way to Pico Ruivo, so plan how you leave Pico Ruivo before you start. Finish at Porto Moniz before the complex closes at 19:00. If the weather turns, check the trail’s published status, walk only the EUR 4.50 out-and-back to Pedra Rija, or switch to Funchal: Blandy’s, the Monte Palace museum until 17:00, and on a Sunday the Mercado da Penteada, open 07:00 to 13:00.

Madeira in June vs May and July

At Funchal May June July
Average high 71.6°F 74.7°F 77.7°F
Average low 61.2°F 64.8°F 67.5°F
Precipitation 1.07 in 0.31 in 0.07 in
Days with 1 mm or more 3.3 1.0 0.3
Sea surface (daily maxima) 69.9°F 71.6°F 75.0°F
Cruise passengers, 2026 (APRAM) 19,434 10,816 4,071

Four weeks either side, Funchal’s average high moves about 3°F at a time: 71.6°F in May, 74.7°F in June, 77.7°F in July. Rain days fall from 3.3 to 1.0 to 0.3, and precipitation from 1.07 inches to 0.31 to 0.07. The sea, on the same daily-maximum basis, goes from 69.9°F to 71.6°F, then jumps to 75.0°F, a rise of 3.4°F after June against 1.7°F before it.

Move to May and you walk in cooler air but take 3.3 rain days and 19,434 cruise passengers through the port. Move to July and you get a 75.0°F sea and a 67.5°F average night, with the cruise count down to 4,071. We found no room-rate series for either month, so we cannot tell you what the shift costs.

Is June a good time to visit Madeira?

Yes, for walkers and garden lovers who want long days and a dry Funchal: one rain day and a 21:18 sunset make a two-trail day possible. If your vacation is built around warm sea swims, June comes second of the three months, with water 3.4°F cooler than July’s.

If June is wrong for you, pick July for the sea and the driest town weather, 0.3 rain days at Funchal. Pick May only if cooler air matters more than the 3.3 rain days that come with it. For the mainland calendar, see our best time to visit Portugal.

June holds the solstice, the longest day of the year, so Madeira’s timed trails have more entry slots between sunrise and sunset than in any other month.

The last word

Book the trail slots first and the fun around them second: SIMplifica is the only door to every PR trail, and June’s long light is what makes each pass go further. One more fact to check before you promise anyone a day on Porto Santo. Porto Santo Line advertises crossings from EUR 47.02, yet its own footnote ties that fare to registered residents, adds a fuel surcharge on top, and leaves the visitor fare inside a booking engine we could not read.
