Mexico to Belize by Land: The Chetumal Border, Corozal and What to Bring

On the Boulevard Bahía in Chetumal, with the bay glinting beside you and a plate of local food in front of you, the question comes up: how far is Belize from here? The answer is close. The Mexican border town sits on the edge of Chetumal Bay, and Corozal Town, the first Belizean town, lies just beyond the frontier in the north of the country.

How do you cross from Mexico into Belize?

You cross by land by leaving Chetumal in Quintana Roo, reaching the Mexico-Belize border and entering the northernmost district of Belize, Corozal. Corozal Town is the first sizable stop on the Belizean side, and from there the rest of the country opens up to the south. It is a crossing that suits travelers who are already in the southern Yucatán Peninsula and want to arrive in Belize on the ground rather than by air.

Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo and sits on the western side of Chetumal Bay, near the mouth of the Río Hondo. It is a city of a fair size, the third most populous in the state, and it has its own airport with commercial service. Many travelers use it as the last stop in Mexico before the frontier, and it rewards a little time before you go.

By land and then onward

Once you have crossed, you are in Corozal District, where English is the most widely spoken language, followed by Spanish. That matters on the first day: the switch from Spanish to English is gentle, since a large share of residents speak both well. Corozal Town sits on the Caribbean Sea, a short stretch from the border, and it is the capital of its district.

From the border area, Belize City lies far to the south of Corozal Town. Corozal is described as being about 84 miles north of Belize City, so the land journey onward is a real one and worth planning around rather than treating as an afterthought.

By water from Chetumal

There is also a sea option from the same Mexican city. The San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi departs from the Terminal Maritima Internacional Filiberto Sabido Padilla in Chetumal and offers transportation to Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. The trip between San Pedro and Chetumal takes 1 hour 30 minutes.

If you want to ask about the service, the Chetumal office of the water taxi can be reached at [email protected]. For a traveler heading straight to the cayes, this is a different shape of journey from the road, and it lets you skip the northern mainland altogether.

Things to see before you leave Chetumal

The Museum of the Mayan Culture is the largest and most comprehensive museum in Quintana Roo on the subject, with authentic works and reproductions, and it is divided into several sections with hundreds of regional exhibits on Maya society. It is a good primer for the sites you may visit in Belize. The old district has dozens of colonial homes in beautiful condition on sand-ridden roads.

Kohunlich, just outside Chetumal, is home to the Temple of the Masks and many archaeological finds. Along the Boulevard Bahía you can walk by the bay and eat at many restaurants serving local cuisine, which makes a fitting last meal on the Mexican side.

Where is the border crossing?

The crossing lies on the Belize-Mexico border north of Corozal Town, which is 9 miles from the frontier, with Chetumal on the Mexican side. Corozal Town is the Belizean town you reach first, and it is the capital of Corozal District, the northernmost district of the country.

The border area is also a place of work. Almost 65% of Corozaleños depend on the Commercial Free Zone, located on the Belize-Mexico border, for employment. So the frontier is not just a gate for visitors but a commercial hub for the district around it.

Corozal Town after the crossing

Corozal Town lies on the Caribbean Sea in northern Belize. Its population is small, a few thousand people, and most of the town was rebuilt after Hurricane Janet destroyed an estimated 90% of it in 1955, so most structures you see today post-date that storm. The mood is of a quiet bayside town rather than a busy hub.

Maximum Water Park opened to the public in April 2021, and Corozo Blue’s is a place to spend an evening. Corozal’s sights are listed in the table, with the hours that apply.

Maya sites near the border

Pre-Columbian Maya ruins are found at Santa Rita near Corozal Town and at Cerros in Corozal District. Cerros lies across Corozal Bay. It can be reached by boat from the main dock in Corozal or by a 10-mile dirt road that can be very washed out after bad weather.

That detail matters for the season. The wet season on this coast runs through the autumn, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a road that turns poor after storms is a real consideration in these months.

Stopping in Bacalar

North of Chetumal, Bacalar is a Pueblo Mágico, named so in 2006, with a Maya origin and a Spanish founding in 1545. The Fortress de San Felipe, completed in 1729, can be visited today, along with the Piracy Museum, the Bacalar Lagoon and the Blue Cenote.

Bacalar is served by a Tren Maya station that opened on October 6, 2024. The nearby Limones and Chacchoben archaeological sites are served by a separate station called Limones-Chacchoben.

What do you need at the border?

Tourists staying less than 30 days do not require a visa. These are the papers that matter at the Belize side of the crossing.

The documents, in one place

  • A U.S. passport valid for the length of your stay in Belize.
  • Proof of an onward or return ticket, required of all travelers entering Belize.
  • Sufficient funds to cover the cost of your entire stay.
  • No visa for a tourist stay of less than 30 days.
  • No special immunizations are required of visitors.

Those arriving by land should also know that different fees are charged depending on whether the stay is less than or more than 24 hours. The amounts are set by the Belizean authorities at the frontier, so the cost depends on how long you plan to remain.

Staying longer than 30 days

Visitors planning to stay longer than 30 days must get their passport re-stamped at a local immigration office and pay an extra fee for each additional month, up to a maximum of six months. That is the route for anyone who finds that Belize is harder to leave than expected.

Traveling with children

When children travel without both parents, immigration officials require proof of consent and identification from the non-traveling parent, as well as the children’s birth certificates. Families crossing with one parent should gather these papers before leaving Chetumal, since the frontier is not the place to look for them.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.

Chetumal itself is vulnerable to tropical cyclones, and Hurricanes Janet and Dean, both Category 5 storms, made landfall near the city in 1955 and 2007. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so an autumn crossing falls inside it.

Chetumal’s wet season runs from May to October and its dry season from November to April. The English-speaking north of Belize makes the first conversations easy, since English is the most spoken language in Corozal District.
