In May, the water off Placencia turns warm enough that boats head out toward Gladden Spit in hope of a whale shark, while on the cayes the dock bars set out cold Belikin and the afternoon light stretches long over the reef. Inland, the Cayo hills are still dry and golden before the greener months arrive. May in Belize is a warm, sunny month for the cayes, the reef and the Maya sites, with the rains only beginning to creep in.

What is the weather like in Belize in May?
May is hot and mostly sunny along the coast, with the sea at its warmest since the start of the year and a little more rain than April. In Belize City, afternoons run close to 90°F and nights stay warm and still, so you will want shade, a breeze and a swim to break up the day. The sea around the cayes and the southern coast feels like bathwater compared with early spring.
| Month | Belize City average high (°F) | Belize City average low (°F) | Belize City rain days | Sea at San Pedro (°F) | Sea at Placencia (°F) | Sea at Corozal (°F) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| April | 88.6 | 74.8 | 3.3 | 82.6 | 84.3 | 84.7 |
| May | 89.9 | 77.0 | 5.3 | 84.7 | 86.9 | 87.2 |
| June | 89.4 | 77.7 | 10.0 | 86.6 | 88.2 | 88.8 |
Seen from Belize City, May is the month the nights stop feeling merely warm and start feeling tropical, with lows near 77°F. Rain shows up on about five days, and the month brings roughly four inches in all. That is more than April but well short of what June delivers, so most days are still built around sunshine rather than umbrellas.
The sea changes more from place to place than the air does. Around San Pedro on Ambergris Caye it sits in the mid-80s, while off Placencia in the south and near Corozal Town in the north it climbs to the upper 80s. Daylight lasts about thirteen hours in mid-May, which gives you a long window for boats, ruins and evening drinks on the water.
Where to go in Belize in May
The cayes: San Pedro and the barrier reef
San Pedro, on the southern part of Ambergris Caye, is the obvious base for reef time in May, with the sea warming toward the mid-80s. The Belize Barrier Reef, the longest in the western hemisphere, runs just offshore and includes the Turneffe Islands, Lighthouse Reef and Glover’s Reef, all names that fill dive and snorkel boards on the island.
Days here suit a slow rhythm: a morning on the water, lunch of fish tacos or ceviche at a beach bar, a nap in a hammock, then sunset from a pier. Sargassum, the brown algae that drifts in clumps and smells like rotten eggs when it piles up on a beach, has been washing across the Caribbean since 2011, so some stretches of shore may look different from the postcards.
Placencia and the southern coast
Placencia is a long, narrow peninsula with a sidewalk village at its tip and quiet beach stretches to the north. Maya Beach, about a mile and a half long, sits midway along it with small resorts, two small grocery stores, a half-dozen bars and restaurants and an art gallery. It is the place for sandy toes, kayaks and low-key evenings, and the sea here reaches the upper 80s in May.
Inland from the peninsula, the Mayflower Archaeological Reserve holds three post-classic Maya ruins (Mayflower, T’au Witz and Maintzunun) as well as waterfalls, a green counterpoint to the beach days. Offshore, the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve is the reason many people come at this time of year.
The Cayo District and the Maya sites
Cayo borders Guatemala to the west and is home to Caracol, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, Baking Pot, Lower Dover and El Pilar, a long list of pre-Columbian Maya sites. May is a good month to string several together, walking plazas and stairways under big skies before the wetter months turn the trails muddy.
The hills pair well with a stay at a jungle lodge, with mornings of birdsong and evenings of river sounds. Expect the heat to be strong in the open plazas, so the shade of the forest edges is welcome.
What to do in Belize in May
Look for whale sharks off Placencia
The Gladden Spit spawning aggregation draws one of the largest predictable whale shark congregations in Belize, and it is an important tourism resource for Placencia and neighboring coastal communities. The marine reserve exists to protect this gathering site and the Silk Cayes. Boats leave from the Placencia area for the reserve, and a sighting is a chance rather than a guarantee.
In Belize it is illegal to take or kill whale sharks or nurse sharks, which is part of why the animals still appear here year after year. Nature does not follow a schedule, so go with patience and see anything you spot as a gift.
Snorkel, dive and explore the reef
With the sea in the mid-80s to upper 80s, May is simply comfortable for time in the water. Around San Pedro, snorkel and dive outings reach the reef and the atolls of Turneffe, Lighthouse Reef and Glover’s Reef.
Between swims, the cayes offer plenty of land-side pleasure: golf-cart-free strolls along the shoreline, rum punch at a beach bar, grilled lobster or snapper on a plate with rice and beans. On the mainland, Placencia adds kayaking and relaxed afternoons by the sea.
Walk the Maya ruins
Cayo’s Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Caracol give the month a very different feel from the beach. You walk among stone plazas, ball courts and temples, listening to toucans and howler monkeys in the canopy. In the south, the Mayflower reserve combines ruins with waterfalls. Pair a ruin morning with an evening of Belizean home cooking in San Ignacio or a lodge dining room, and you have the classic split of a highland stay.
Is Belize busy in May?
May feels relaxed along most of the coast, with the main rush of spring travel behind you and the rainy months not yet arrived. Beach bars have space at the counter, and boats to the reef run without much fuss. Particular crowds depend on the week and the place.
San Pedro is the busiest base on the cayes, with a long tourism history that began in the early 1970s and grew considerably in the decades after. Its streets and docks stay lively, while Placencia and Maya Beach carry a gentler pace, with small resorts and a few bars rather than a crowd.
Inland, the Cayo sites tend to feel spacious because the plazas are large and the jungle swallows the sound of voices. Corozal Town, on the northern coast, sits quieter still, with a warm sea and a calm waterfront.
The longer daylight, about thirteen hours in mid-May, helps spread visitors across the day. You can take a morning boat, rest through the hot middle hours, and still have light for an evening walk.
What to pack for Belize in May
Pack for heat and sun on the coast and for forest heat in Cayo. Along the cayes, the sea warms to the mid-80s or higher, so swimwear takes priority, while inland trips to ruins call for sturdy shoes and sun cover.
- Lightweight, breathable clothes for days near 90°F and nights that stay warm.
- A hat, sunglasses and reef-friendly sunscreen for long hours on the water and in open plazas.
- Swimsuits and a snorkel mask if you like your own gear.
- Walking shoes or sandals with grip for ruins and wet docks.
- A light rain jacket for the showers that appear on about five days of the month in Belize City.
- Insect repellent for evenings by the water and in the forest.

Is May a good time to visit Belize?
Yes, for sun, reef and ruins, with the cayes and Placencia the best bets for anyone who wants warm water. May suits snorkelers, divers, beach lovers and anyone who wants Maya sites without a heavy rain schedule.
Compared with April, May is a touch hotter, the sea is a couple of degrees warmer, and rain days rise from about three to about five in Belize City. Compared with June, it is clearly drier: June doubles the rain days to about ten and brings a sea warmer still, in the high 80s along the coast.
That puts May in a sweet spot. Water temperatures are lovely, the days are long, and the wetter weather has not yet taken over. The month also falls just before the Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1.
What stands out is the Gladden Spit gathering. May is a month when you can pair a whale shark outing off Placencia with a stay among the Cayo ruins, and keep the cayes for the last days of the trip.
