Car Rental in Belize: Licenses, Airport Pickup and Road Conditions

Somewhere between the baggage claim at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport and the first road sign pointing toward the Western Highway, a lot of travelers stop and wonder whether they should be behind the wheel at all.

Belize can be driven, with agencies waiting right across from the terminal, and the roads reward a driver who knows what they are like.

Can you rent a car in Belize?

Yes, car rental agencies operate at the country’s main international airport, and visitors with a valid U.S. license can drive in Belize. Two companies are listed at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport: Hertz/Safari Belize and Crystal Auto Rental. Both sit in the same rental complex, so the first step of a road trip can start within sight of the arrivals building.

What changes from home is the road itself. Belize drives on the right, as in the United States, so the basics of lane position and turns will feel familiar. Everything around them is different: the pavement, the traffic mix, the signs, the lighting after dark. A rented car gives you freedom to stop at a roadside fruit stand or a trailhead, and it also hands you responsibility for all of it.

Roads that change character

Road conditions in Belize range from two-lane paved roads to dirt or gravel tracks. On a single day you can roll along a paved highway with the radio on, then turn off toward a lodge, a waterfall or a village and find yourself on gravel, slowing to a crawl as the surface shifts under the tires. Plan your routes with that in mind, because the road to a place and the place itself may feel like two different countries.

Bridges deserve their own attention. Bridges on some major highways can be reduced to a single lane, sometimes without warning. That means oncoming vehicles may be taking the span at the same moment as you, and a driver who eases off early and watches the far end has an easier time than one who arrives at speed. It is one of those features that makes Belizean driving feel more attentive and less automatic.

Night driving and breakdowns

Driving at night is strongly discouraged in Belize. Rural stretches are dark, and surprises such as a person walking along the shoulder or an unlit vehicle are harder to see in headlights. The practical effect is that your day should end when the light does, with the car parked and dinner ahead of you instead of a long drive.

Roadside assistance is frequently unavailable. If a tire goes flat on a gravel track, help may not be a phone call away, so the sensible habit is to treat any remote drive as one where you carry what you need and set out with a full tank and a clear destination.

Cyclists add to the mix, since they commonly fail to obey red lights or stop signs and often ride against traffic. Expect the unexpected near towns and villages.

Other ways to get around

A car is not the only way to move through the country. Taxis are prevalent in cities but not as common in rural areas, and they are identified by green license plates. Uber and Lyft are not available in Belize, so the app habit from home does not carry over.

Buses are used to travel between cities and are not common for short commutes. Secondhand and salvage vehicles and buses are often used for public transportation and may not have security features such as seatbelts and airbags. Some travelers weigh that against the independence of their own rental. Either way, knowing how the alternatives work helps you decide how much of your trip belongs behind a steering wheel.

What do you need to rent one?

The one requirement the record spells out is a valid driver’s license or permit: valid U.S. or international driver’s permits are accepted in Belize for three months after initial entry. For a typical vacation, that window covers the whole stay, and the license you already carry is the document that matters at the counter.

Your license and the time window

A U.S. license is accepted for the period above, and so is an international driving permit. The clock starts at your first entry into the country, not on the day you pick up the car. A traveler who arrives, spends time on a caye, and rents a car later in the trip should count from the day they landed.

If you are the sort of traveler who stays in Belize longer than a vacation, that window is the line that matters, and it is worth knowing before you plan a long road trip. Extending your stay is a separate matter from extending your right to drive, and the rule about permits is the one tied to driving.

Reaching the agencies

Both airport agencies publish contact details, and Crystal Auto Rental lists an email for reservations. Questions about vehicle types, extra drivers, mileage and whatever else you want settled before you land are the kind of thing a phone call or message can resolve. A short conversation with an agency is a better source for those details than guesswork.

Agency Phone
Hertz/Safari Belize +(501) 225 – 3300
Crystal Auto Rental +(501) 223 – 1600

A travel agency in the terminal

All in One Travel Service is a travel agency at the same airport, reachable by phone at +(501) 225 – 2016 or +(501) 620 – 2267, and by email at [email protected] or [email protected].

That is the simplest way to avoid an awkward moment at the counter after a long flight.

Where do you pick it up?

At the airport: car rental agencies at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport are located across from the Airport Terminal Building at the Rental Services Center. After you clear arrivals and step outside, you are looking at the building where the keys are handed over, which keeps the transition from plane to road very short.

The Rental Services Center

The center groups the rental desks in one place, with the terminal on the other side of the way. Hertz/Safari Belize and Crystal Auto Rental are the agencies listed for this airport, so you can compare what each offers without wandering between buildings. For a first-time visitor this is a calm place to begin, with the paperwork done under a roof before the engine is started.

The airport itself keeps a fixed daily schedule, and your arrival time matters if you want a counter that is open when you step out of the terminal.

The airport access road

Roadwork and dredging are underway on the airport access road, causing slower traffic and uneven road surfaces. Drivers should leave extra time for airport trips. That matters twice for a renter: once when you leave with your new car, and again when you come back to the airport at the end of the trip.

In the work zone, reduce speed and follow flaggers, and watch for dredging equipment and workers near the roadway. It is a short stretch of your journey, but it is the first piece of driving you do in the country, and it sets the tone: attentive, unhurried, a little patient.

Starting the drive

Once you are rolling, you drive on the right. Letting the first hour be slow is a habit that pays off, because the road teaches you its manners quickly.

Keep in mind that the day’s driving ends at dusk. With night driving strongly discouraged, an arrival time that leaves you with daylight for the road to your first stop is part of the plan, and the airport’s closing hour is another reason to think about when you land and when you leave.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and a rental trip in those months can mean heavy rain on the same roads that are gravel or two lanes at the best of times. Leave room in the schedule for a slow drive or a change of plan. If you leave a car at the airport instead of returning it to an agency, these are the parking fees.

Fee Amount Who pays
Daily parking at the airport US$2.00 per day Anyone parking a car there
Overnight parking at the airport US$9.00 Anyone parking a car overnight
