Where to Go in January: 16 Trips, from Jamaica to Patagonia and Iceland

Take the same week off in January and you can spend it two entirely different ways. Land in Bangkok and the trip runs at 87.9°F in the afternoon, with rain measurable on 1.3 days across the whole month. Land in Reykjavík instead and those same seven nights come in at 34.4°F, with 5 hours 31 minutes of daylight on January 15 and 13.4 days of rain or snow. Both work. Neither is a lesser version of the other, and no other month spreads the choice this far apart.

Two dates settled part of the map before you started booking. The Atlantic hurricane season closed on November 30, so the Caribbean sells January as its steady month. Europe’s Christmas markets took their stalls down on December 24, so a market weekend is off the table until next winter. Still ahead: the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend on the third Monday, when desert resorts and Florida rooms tighten for three nights (est.), and Australia Day on January 26, a public holiday that keeps Sydney’s harbor beaches full into the final week.

Where the Caribbean is driest in January: Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Yucatan

Across the three, a January week comes with 4.2 to 4.8 measurable rain days and no more than 1.79 inches of rain for the month, and the sea sits between 80.8°F and 82.0°F. That is as close as a beach trip gets to a fixed itinerary.

Jamaica

A week on the north coast buys 80.8°F afternoons, 71.1°F nights and an 82.0°F sea, warm enough to swim without the first-minute flinch. Rain totals 1.79 inches and lands on 4.2 days, so an afternoon shower is the normal interruption rather than a lost day. Daylight runs 11 hours 11 minutes on January 15: enough for a morning on the sand at Negril and an afternoon in the hills.

The trade-off is the calendar rather than the sky. January sits inside the island’s high season, so the room that was quiet in October now carries winter rates, and the MLK weekend squeezes Negril and Montego Bay for three nights. Puerto Rico

Warmest of the three at 82.3°F, with 1.68 inches spread over 4.8 days and an 80.8°F sea. For an American traveler the paperwork is the real argument: no passport, no currency to change, a phone plan that keeps working, and a domestic flight that puts you on a Caribbean beach before lunch. Four nights pays for itself here, and that is rare in this part of the world.

The Yucatan

Read the two figures together before booking. Rain of 1.79 inches over 4.6 days makes this the driest of the three, but 78.2°F also makes it the coolest, four degrees under Puerto Rico, with the sea holding 81.6°F. That suits a ruins-and-cenotes itinerary better than a straight lounger week: Tulum and Cobá at opening time, an inland cenote at midday, the beach once the afternoon has warmed up.

Warm places in the US in January: Death Valley, Palm Springs, San Diego and Miami

These four differ less in temperature than in what they let you plan. Palm Springs and Death Valley are dry, at 0.64 and 0.37 inch for the month. San Diego is not, at 1.98 inches over 4.0 days. All three of those figures come from NOAA weather stations rather than a model grid, so they carry more weight than most numbers here.

Death Valley

January turns the park from a driving trip into a walking one. At 67.2°F, Badwater, the Mesquite dunes and Golden Canyon are all comfortable on foot, and the park’s own station records 0.37 inch of rain across the month on a single measurable day. The three-night stop that would be genuinely dangerous in July becomes a straightforward leg between Las Vegas and the Sierra.

What the trip demands is a real jacket. Nights average 42.5°F on the valley floor, a 25-degree drop, and the campgrounds sit in the open with nothing to break the wind. Sunrise at Zabriskie Point in a fleece and a hat is a different morning from the one the photographs promise.

Palm Springs

The pool-and-golf version of a winter break holds up on the numbers: 71.0°F afternoons and 0.64 inch of rain for the month, measured at Palm Springs International. The figure the resort photographs leave out is 39.0°F before sunrise. A heated pool is heated for a reason, dinner outdoors wants a jacket by 7pm, and an early tee time in January is cold work. Book the afternoon slot.

San Diego

This is the wettest domestic option of the month, and 1.98 inches over 4.0 days is more rain than Jamaica records. It still makes a good city trip: 66.4°F with 50.3°F nights means one layer, and Balboa Park and the zoo do not mind a shower. What it will not deliver is a beach week. The Pacific averages 59.2°F, so surfers wear wetsuits and the rest of us walk.

Miami and the Keys

Where it is summer in January: Cape Town, Patagonia, Sydney and Buenos Aires

These four need real vacation days, 8 to 12 nights rather than a long weekend (est.), because the flights eat two of them at each end. In exchange, Cape Town posts 0.48 inch of rain for the month, the driest figure anywhere here outside Egypt.

Cape Town

January is the driest month of the Cape summer at 0.48 inch, and 77.9°F with more than 14 hours of light is what makes the flight arithmetic work: Table Mountain in the morning, Stellenbosch for lunch, Camps Bay at eight in the evening with the sun still up. One figure sets expectations, though. The sea off the city averages 64.0°F, cold enough that the beach is for sitting on.

Patagonia

This is the hiking window, and light matters more than heat. Nearly 16 hours of daylight at El Calafate lets a walker start the Laguna de los Tres trail at seven and still make a late dinner. Highs average 59.3°F, so pack a fleece and a shell rather than shorts, and the 2.05 inches spread across 6.2 days argues for waterproof boots instead of a rest day pencilled into the plan.

Our data says nothing at all about wind, and down here that omission is the one that costs you. Gusts on the exposed stretches above El Chaltén can turn a flat lakeside path into work, and guides plan around it by starting early. Read every temperature in this line as a best case.

Sydney

Australian school summer holidays run through most of the month, so you are booking into someone else’s peak: ferries busy, beach parking gone by nine, coastal rentals at their annual high (est.). The conditions justify it, with 78.2°F afternoons and 73.4°F water. Rain comes to 2.69 inches over 5.3 days, mostly as late storms. Arrive in the last week, after the 26th, and the numbers hold while the crowd thins.

Buenos Aires

Warmest city here after Bangkok, and the heat is what an itinerary has to bend around: 81.9°F afternoons in dense blocks of masonry, 68.8°F nights, and 3.47 inches of rain arriving on just 5.4 days as thunderstorms. Split the day in two. San Telmo and Recoleta before noon, a long lunch, museums or a nap until six, then the city again from eight until midnight while it is still in the seventies.

Where to go in Asia and North Africa in January: Bangkok, Rajasthan and Marrakech

All three run a dry January and share nothing else. Bangkok holds 87.9°F afternoons, Marrakech 63.6°F, and the suitcase differs by a whole wardrobe.

Bangkok

For a Thailand trip, this is the month that spares you both of the usual complaints. Rain totals 0.58 inch over 1.3 days, so the temple-and-market days survive the schedule, and 70.7°F nights make a rooftop dinner comfortable rather than a sauna. Afternoons still reach 87.9°F, so the plan writes itself: Wat Pho early, river boats late, air conditioning between the two. Five nights before an island leg is the standard shape.

Rajasthan

A fort-and-palace circuit runs on 70.5°F afternoons and 0.35 inch of rain for the entire month. That is about as close to a guaranteed itinerary as this page offers. What catches out travelers who packed for a desert is the 46.4°F night: unheated haveli rooms, open jeeps at dawn in Ranthambore, marble courtyards that hold cold like a cellar. Bring the jacket you would take to Morocco.

Marrakech

Twenty-six degrees separate the two figures, and that gap decides the shape of a day here: souks and gardens from ten until five at 63.6°F, then a riad courtyard at 37.5°F once the sun goes. Rain shows up on 3.6 days for a monthly 1.34 inches, the wettest of these three. The compensation is the backdrop. The High Atlas carries snow in January, and a valley day trip leaves from a city where the palms are still green.

Egypt in January: temples at 70°F and almost no rain

Upper Egypt

Rain across the whole month comes to 0.03 inch. That single figure is why January carries the classic Egypt season, because a temple itinerary is exactly the kind of trip one wet day can ruin. At 0.1 measurable rain days, the average works out to one such day per decade of Januaries near Luxor. Book the Nile cruise, the balloon and the Valley of the Kings on consecutive mornings and expect all three to run.

At 70.3°F, Karnak at eleven in the morning is a pleasant walk instead of an endurance test, and there is no shade at Karnak worth the name. The reverse applies before sunrise: 45.5°F on the West Bank means the balloon basket is genuinely cold, and 10 hours 45 minutes of light means the sightseeing day ends early. Put the temples in the middle of the day and the sunset on the water.

Iceland in January: 34°F, five hours of light and the aurora window

Iceland

Nobody buys this trip for the temperature, and 34.4°F is not what limits it anyway. The constraint is 5 hours 31 minutes of daylight on January 15. A south-coast day means leaving Reykjavík in the dark, seeing two waterfalls inside one long gold hour, and driving home in the dark again. Two sights a day is a full schedule here, not a lazy one.

The other side of the ledger is roughly 18 hours of darkness, and aurora hunting needs precisely that. It also needs a clear sky, and the month brings 5.14 inches of precipitation over 13.4 days. Build five nights so the lights get four or five separate chances, keep the rental car on the ring road, and treat any one evening’s forecast as a coin toss.

Cheapest and most expensive weeks to travel in January

Two windows carry the premium. The first week still holds holiday returns, and the MLK weekend around the third Monday fills desert resorts, the Keys and Caribbean rooms for three nights (est.). South of the equator the pressure lasts longer, since Australian and Argentine school holidays run through most of the month and put Sydney and the Patagonian trailheads at their annual peak. Book the middle two weeks and the same sixteen trips cost less (est.).

Where NOT to go in January

The month does not serve a swimming holiday on a cool-water coast: San Diego’s ocean averages 59.2°F and Cape Town’s 64.0°F, and sunshine changes neither. It does not serve a Christmas-market weekend, because the stalls came down on December 24. And a desert booked for warm evenings will disappoint at 37.5°F in Marrakech, 46.4°F in Rajasthan and 42.5°F on the floor of Death Valley.

Average January temperatures by destination

A rain day is a January day recording at least 0.10 inch, and the monthly totals hide how differently they fall. Jamaica’s 1.79 inches arrives in a few hours across 4.2 days, while Iceland’s 5.14 inches spreads over 13.4. The Death Valley, Palm Springs and San Diego lines come from NOAA weather stations. The other thirteen come from ERA5 reanalysis on a model grid, so a coastal or mountain reading can miss a valley by a degree or two. Flight times and night counts are our editorial estimates, and carry that mark wherever they appear, and budget tiers are relative January signals rather than quotes.

The last word

Given one week and one shot, buy certainty: Upper Egypt, where 0.03 inch of rain over the month means the temple day you booked is the temple day you get, and 70.3°F is right for a site with no shade. One beach we measured never made the sixteen, and it deserves a line here: Guanacaste, in Costa Rica, at 86.0°F with 0.13 inch of rain, 0.3 measurable rain days and an 82.4°F Pacific, roughly three hours from Miami (est.). Some Januaries you want the temples. Some you want to be in the water by noon.
