7 Days in the Bahamas: Itinerary with Nassau, Paradise Island and Harbour Island

Halfway through the week, a ferry slips away from the Nassau docks in the early morning, and by the time the sun is high you are walking toward the pink edge of a beach on Harbour Island. The days before that belong to the capital, with its harbor, its bridges and the ocean-themed resort across the water. This route pairs Nassau and Paradise Island with one Out Island, so you taste both sides of the archipelago in a single week.

Is 7 Days enough for the Bahamas?

Yes, if you treat it as a trip to two places rather than a tour of the whole country. A week works well for travelers who want a city stay with a resort day and then a slower island where the main business is the beach, a bike or golf cart ride, and long lunches. It does not work for someone hoping to sample many islands, because every move between islands costs a morning.

The Bahamas is an archipelago of sixteen island destinations, scattered across a sea of roughly seven hundred islands and cays, and only a fraction of those are inhabited. Islands are separated by open water, so each stop here is a real change of scene, with its own mood and its own pace. That is the charm of the country, and also the reason a short trip is better spent on fewer places.

This route covers Nassau on New Providence, the neighboring island of Paradise Island, and Harbour Island with a taste of Eleuthera. Nassau is the country’s gateway for air travel, so starting there keeps the first days simple. In the Bahamas, the name Out Islands refers to any island that is not New Providence or Freeport, and Harbour Island is one of them, which gives you the contrast between a busy capital and a small village island.

What the route leaves for another trip is a long list. The Exumas, with their chain of cays and the beach where pigs wait at the water’s edge. The Abacos, with their ferries and their lighthouse village. Bimini, so small you can walk anywhere.

And Grand Bahama, with Freeport and Lucayan National Park. Each deserves its own few days, and Adapting the route shows how to graft one of them onto this plan.

The activities that fill an Out Island week are the ones the islands are known for: culinary tours, kayaking, diving and deep-sea fishing. You will not do all of them in a week, and you should not try.

Pick one or two that suit your travel style, a relaxed beach escape or a more cultural city stay, and let the rest of the days stay loose. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism also offers downloadable itineraries built around travel styles, a useful companion if you want to push this plan toward a different mood.

The itinerary stage by stage

Days 1 and 2: Nassau

Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, sits on the island of New Providence, and it is where most flights arrive. Spend the first afternoon on foot in the old center, with its pastel colonial buildings, the harbor front and the straw market stalls, where braided baskets, hats and carved wood are sold. Sleep in the city or along the waterfront, so that the next morning starts with a walk rather than a transfer.

The second day is for the historic edge of town. Climb the old limestone steps cut by hand into the rock, look over the harbor from the forts, and then head west toward Arawak Cay in the evening for a plate of fried fish and conch salad at the open-air stalls. Jitney buses stop running between six and seven in the evening, so plan the day so that you are back where you sleep before they quit.

Day 3: Paradise Island

Paradise Island is a separate island joined to New Providence by two bridges across Nassau Harbour. It is best known for Atlantis, an ocean-themed resort spread over a large property, with water park rides, pools, a beach, restaurants, a walk-in aquarium and casinos. Dolphin Cay, the marine habitat inside the resort, holds manta rays, sea lions and rescued Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, and it is one of the sights people cross the bridge to see.

Cabbage Beach runs east from the resort along the north shore, and it is described as ideal for walking the sand, swimming or simply sunbathing. Public access is by a path that runs north from Casino Drive along the east side of the RIU resort.

Days 4 to 7: Harbour Island and Eleuthera

Harbour Island lies off the northeast coast of Eleuthera, east of Nassau, and its only town is Dunmore Town, a village of painted wooden houses, picket fences and lanes that wander toward the water. Sleep in or near Dunmore Town, so the evenings are for dinners on a veranda or a drink at a beach bar.

The star is the Pink Sand Beach on the eastern Atlantic side, stretching for over three miles and between fifty and a hundred feet wide. Travel magazines have often cited it among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Give it a full day, then give it another one at a different hour, because the color of the sand shifts with the light and with where you stand along the strip.

Devote one day to the larger island of Eleuthera, which has wide, rolling pink sand beaches and large outcrops of ancient coral reef. Governor’s Harbour is the principal settlement, founded in 1648, and the town has the calm of a place that has been settled for centuries.

In Gregory Town, an annual Pineapple Festival celebrates the fruit the area is known for. Keep the last day loose, with a final beach morning before the trip home.

Getting between stops

Leg How Schedule or fare
Nassau to Harbour Island M/V Bo Hengy III high-speed ferry Departs Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. from Nassau, check-in 6:45 to 7:45 a.m.
Nassau to Spanish Wells M/V Bo Hengy III high-speed ferry Arrives 10:10 a.m. on scheduled days
Nassau to North Eleuthera Bahamasair flight Fare from $80.50
Nassau to Fort Lauderdale Bahamasair flight Fare from $172.99

The Nassau to Harbour Island ferry and the Bahamasair flight to North Eleuthera are two different ways to make the same move. The ferry runs on only three days of the week, so build the middle of the trip around those days. The flight reaches North Eleuthera, which sits next to Harbour Island. Choose one for the trip out and fix the day of the week before you plan the days around it.

Nassau is the country’s gateway for air travel, but travelers can also fly directly into one of the Out Islands without going through Nassau. Scheduled air service between the islands is provided by certified domestic and international carriers, and chartered flights exist as well. Between major islands you can also use Bahamas Ferry Services and the regularly scheduled mailboats, which carry cargo and passengers along the island chain.

On Harbour Island, getting around is about the village itself, since the beach and Dunmore Town share one small island. The route needs no long road journeys, only the single hop between Nassau and the Out Island, plus your flight home from Nassau.

For the trip home, the Bahamasair fare from Nassau to Fort Lauderdale gives one idea of the airline’s reach. If your itinerary stretches to the Abacos, Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco has an international airport, and in the Abacos you can explore by local ferry. Treat any link between two islands as air or sea, and look for the specific operator once you have chosen the dates.

What to book before your 7 Days in the Bahamas

Settle the entry papers first: the Bahamas asks for a valid passport and a return or onward ticket, and visitors may be asked to show enough funds to support themselves during the stay. Then fix the flight into Nassau and the leg to Harbour Island, either the ferry days or the flight to North Eleuthera. The rest of the week can stay open.

Adapting the route

For a shorter trip, drop the Paradise Island day and keep Nassau as a single full day, then move to Harbour Island early. A five-day version keeps the contrast between city and Out Island and still leaves two full days on the beach. If the ferry days do not line up with your dates, the flight to North Eleuthera gives a different way of making the same move.

Seasons, rain and hurricanes

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip in those months deserves a little more flexibility. In Nassau, January highs sit near the upper 70s with rain on only a few days, which makes winter a gentle time for walking the old town. July is hotter, with highs around 91°F and showers on a dozen days or so, usually short bursts that pass quickly.

On a rainy day in Nassau, the shaded halls of the straw market, a long lunch in the harbor-front restaurants and the Atlantis aquarium make good fallbacks. On Harbour Island, rain means a late breakfast in Dunmore Town and a walk to the beach when the clouds break. Keep the last day loose in the storm months, so a delayed ferry or flight does not ruin the trip home.

For families and slower trips

With children, Paradise Island can take a full day and even two. Atlantis has a water park, pools, a beach and a walk-in aquarium, and Dolphin Cay brings manta rays, sea lions and dolphins close to the water’s edge. Harbour Island then rewards a slower rhythm, with a beach wide enough for sandcastles and a village small enough that nobody gets far.

For a slower trip, spend only two nights in Nassau and give Harbour Island and Eleuthera five. Divide the Out Island days between the pink sand beach, a day on Eleuthera and a day with no plan at all. Couples often like to pair a culinary tour or a kayaking outing with long, unscheduled afternoons by the sea.

Adding a longer stretch

With a few extra days, the Exumas are the natural addition. Exuma International Airport on Great Exuma has daily domestic and international flights, and George Town is a few miles away.

Farther along the chain, Staniel Cay Airport is an official Port of Entry, and near the cay lies Pig Beach, a sandy beach occupied by pigs. At Staniel Cay Marina, visitors are allowed to swim with nurse sharks at their own risk, and the sharks can bite if you put your hands near their mouths.

The Abacos suit travelers who like boats and small villages. Hope Town sits on Elbow Cay, reached by local ferry, and Abaco National Park protects the northern breeding grounds of the Bahama Parrot.

Bimini is the opposite, a thin island so small that you can walk to wherever you want to go, with the wreck of the SS Sapona, a snorkeling and diving site, close by. Grand Bahama offers Lucayan National Park, where the caves have seasonal access because bats use them.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

Carry a little cash for small purchases, such as stalls at Arawak Cay and village snack bars on the Out Islands. Most crime occurs in Nassau and in Freeport, so use the usual city habits there: keep valuables out of sight and take a taxi rather than walking after dark.

The Atlantic hurricane season shapes the calendar, so keep the last day of the trip loose if you travel in its months. Evening is when the jitneys stop running, and the Out Islands slow down with the sunset.
