10 Days in the Bahamas: Itinerary: Nassau, Harbour Island and the Exumas

Somewhere in the middle of the trip you are standing on the pink sand of Harbour Island, with the Atlantic rolling onto the long eastern beach and the pastel houses of Dunmore Town behind you. A few days earlier you were among the resort towers and the harbor bridges of Paradise Island, and soon you will be looking for the swimming pigs and nurse sharks of the Exuma Cays. The route links a capital city, a pink-sand island and a chain of cays, for travelers who want to see how different the islands of the Bahamas can be.

Is 10 Days enough for the Bahamas?

Ten days is enough for a real taste of the Bahamas, as long as you accept that you are tasting an archipelago and not a single destination. The country has 16 island destinations, each with its own pace. A route that touches only a few of them leaves time to unpack, walk around and sit still, while a route that tries to cover five turns into a series of airport lobbies and dock lines.

This itinerary starts in Nassau, because Nassau is the country’s gateway for air travel. From there it moves east to Eleuthera and Harbour Island, then ends in the Exumas. Exuma International Airport, on Great Exuma, has daily domestic and international flights, so you leave from the end of the route and do not have to double back through Nassau. That keeps the last day calm and gives you a final morning on the water.

The route suits travelers who want a city day, a stretch of pink beach and a few days among the cays. It gives you the harbor and the resort side of New Providence, the quiet streets of Dunmore Town and the boat-and-beach rhythm of the Exumas. The cooking runs through all of it, from conch salad eaten at a roadside stand to fried fish with peas and rice at a settlement restaurant.

What it leaves out is a lot, and each piece deserves its own trip. Grand Bahama, the northernmost island, has Freeport and Lucayan National Park. The Abacos, with Hope Town on Elbow Cay and the airport at Marsh Harbour, are a trip of lighthouse villages and local ferries. Bimini is small enough that visitors can walk wherever they want to go, and it has the wreck of the SS Sapona offshore.

Andros is the largest island in the country and holds a national park of wilderness on its west side. Beyond them lie islands such as Mayaguana, with a population of 277 people. The Bahamas is made up of 700 islands and cays. Only 30 are inhabited, which is why the choice of stops matters more than the number of stops.

The itinerary stage by stage

Days 1 to 3: Nassau and Paradise Island

Nassau, the capital, sits on New Providence, the most populous island in the Bahamas, and you land here whether you are flying in or changing planes. Sleep on Paradise Island if you want the resort side, or in town if you prefer to walk out of your door into the streets of the old harbor. Day 1 is for arriving, finding a table near the water and eating conch in one of its forms: raw in a salad with lime and peppers, or cracked and fried.

Day 2 belongs to Paradise Island, linked to New Providence by two bridges across Nassau Harbour. The island is best known for the Atlantis resort, with its water park rides, pools, restaurants, casinos and walk-in aquarium. Dolphin Cay, inside the resort, is a marine habitat for manta rays, sea lions and rescued Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.

For the open shore, Cabbage Beach runs east from Atlantis along the north side of the island and is described as ideal for beach walking, swimming or sunbathing. Public access is by a path running north from Casino Drive along the east side of the RIU resort.

Day 3 goes to the city on the main island: the waterfront, the straw market stalls, the old forts and the pastel government buildings around the square.

Then you move on. Eleuthera and Harbour Island lie east of Nassau, and the next stage covers the ways to get there.

Days 4 to 7: Eleuthera and Harbour Island

Day 4 is the crossing. The ferry to Spanish Wells and Harbour Island runs only on certain days of the week, so choose your departure day around it, or fly into North Eleuthera instead. Its small lanes, painted wooden houses and waterfront bars make an easy rhythm of breakfast, beach, a late lunch and an evening walk.

The reason to come is the Pink Sand Beach, on the island’s eastern Atlantic side. It stretches for over three miles and is 50 to 100 feet wide, and travel magazines have often cited it as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Give it a full morning and then another full afternoon. The color is softest in low light, early or late in the day.

Days 5 and 6 are for Eleuthera proper, across the water from Harbour Island. It is a narrow island with wide rolling pink sand beaches and large outcrops of ancient coral reef along its coast.

Governor’s Harbour, a principal settlement, was established by the Eleutherian Adventurers in 1648, and its harbor front is a pleasant place for a long lunch. Gregory Town hosts the annual Pineapple Festival, a nod to the fruit the island is known for. Day 7 is for the move to the Exumas.

Days 8 to 10: the Exumas

The Exuma district consists of over 365 islands and cays, and the base for the first part of the stay is Great Exuma. Exuma International Airport is a few miles from George Town, the main settlement, which sits on a harbor lined with small restaurants and docks. Great Exuma is 37 miles long and joined to Little Exuma by a small bridge, so a day driving or taking a tour along the island’s beaches and villages makes sense for Day 8.

Day 9 turns to the cays and Staniel Cay, whose airport is an official Port of Entry with Customs and Immigration. Pig Beach near Staniel Cay is a sandy beach occupied by pigs, which come down to the water to meet the boats. At Staniel Cay Marina, visitors are allowed to swim with nurse sharks at their own risk, and the sharks can bite if you put your hands near their mouths.

Day 10 is the departure. With daily domestic and international flights from Exuma International Airport, you can fly out directly from the island, keeping the morning for a last walk on the beach and a last bowl of conch chowder before the trip ends.

Getting between stops

Leg How Detail
Nassau to North Eleuthera Bahamasair flight Fare listed from $80.50
Nassau to Spanish Wells and Harbour Island M/V Bo Hengy III high-speed ferry Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, leaving Nassau at 8:00 a.m. and reaching Spanish Wells at 10:10 a.m.
Eleuthera to the Exumas By air or by sea Exuma International Airport on Great Exuma has daily domestic and international flights

The Bahamas is an archipelago, so every move is a flight or a boat. Nassau is the gateway for air travel into the country, and it is also possible to fly directly into one of the Out Islands without going through Nassau at all. Scheduled air service between the islands is run by certified domestic and international carriers. Chartered flights are another option on routes that scheduled service does not cover.

By sea, travelers connect between major islands on Bahamas Ferry Services and regularly scheduled mailboats. The Nassau to Spanish Wells and Harbour Island ferry runs on only three days of the week, which is why the days of the Eleuthera stage depend on it. In the Abacos, local ferries link the islands, which is worth knowing if you swap the Exumas for a stay there.

For the crossing from Eleuthera to the Exumas, the route is by air or by sea, and the timing depends on the carrier and the day you choose, so settle it as soon as you fix your dates. A fare listed by Bahamasair from Nassau to Fort Lauderdale starts at $172.99, which shows what returning to the United States by a Nassau routing can cost. Leaving from Exuma directly takes that extra stop out of the plan.

What to book before your 10 Days in the Bahamas

Settle the entry papers first: passports are required by all persons entering the Bahamas, every visitor needs a return or onward ticket, and visitors may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds to support themselves during the stay. Then fix the flights into Nassau and out of Exuma, and the ferry with Bahamas Ferry Services for the Eleuthera crossing, since it runs only on certain days. The rest of the route, from beaches to harbor walks, can stay loose.

Adapting the route

For a shorter trip, trim the Eleuthera stage or drop the Exumas. A week works with Nassau and Harbour Island alone, or with Nassau and the Exumas if you prefer cays to pink sand. A shorter route also means one less crossing, which matters because every move between islands uses up half a day.

For a longer stay, add an island rather than days to the same ones. Grand Bahama offers Freeport, with accommodations ranging from family-friendly resorts to romantic all-inclusives and cozy B&Bs, and Lucayan National Park, the only place in the Bahamas where you can see all six of the island’s ecosystems.

Access to the caves there is seasonal, because they are also used for bat conservation. The Abacos, Bimini and Andros each make a separate chapter.

Season changes how the trip feels. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and a trip in those months needs a flexible mind, since weather can reshuffle ferries and flights.

Grand Bahama has a hot, rainy season from May through October and a warm, dry season from November through April. If you want a true feel for the islands’ air, Nassau is the closest long-term guide, so these numbers speak for Nassau alone.

Nassau Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (inches) Rain days
January 79.4 65.1 2.6 4.3
July 90.8 76.4 5.77 12.4

In practice, a winter trip means warm days for walking Nassau and long beach mornings, with few rainy days. Summer is hotter and wetter, with showers on more days, so keep the afternoons flexible and leave the beach for the morning.

For families, Paradise Island does most of the work: the water park rides and pools of Atlantis, the walk-in aquarium and the marine habitat of Dolphin Cay, plus Cabbage Beach just outside. Pig Beach near Staniel Cay is a good story for children, though the nurse sharks at the marina are a place to keep hands out of the water. For a slower pace, stay put: two bases, Harbour Island and Great Exuma, with long beach days instead of day trips, make the same ten days feel like a rest.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

The Bahamas is a foreign country, so keep your passport and return ticket in your day bag until the last flight. The Atlantic hurricane season shapes the calendar, and the ferry to Harbour Island runs only a few days a week, so build around it.

Bring a light layer for boat rides and evenings on the cays, and leave room in your days for slow mornings, long lunches and the sea.
