5 Days in the Bahamas: Itinerary with Nassau, Paradise Island and Harbour Island

Somewhere on the third morning, the sand on Harbour Island turns pink where the tide has just pulled back, and the lanes of Dunmore Town are still quiet behind their pastel clapboard houses. Two days earlier you were on the bridges and beaches of Nassau and Paradise Island, with resort towers on the skyline. The route moves from the capital to a slower island, so a short vacation feels like two different trips.

Is 5 Days enough for the Bahamas?

Yes, if you treat it as a taste of two islands rather than a tour of the country, and it suits travelers who would rather unpack twice than five times. The Bahamas is an archipelago of roughly 700 islands and cays, and only about 30 of them are inhabited. Sixteen island destinations are the ones built for visitors. A short week cannot cover that spread, so this plan picks a pair that go well together.

The first stage is Nassau, the capital on New Providence, with Paradise Island beside it. Nassau is the country’s gateway for air travel, so almost every trip passes through it anyway, and it gives you the city, the harbor, the beach walks and the resort side of the Bahamas in two days. The second stage is Eleuthera and Harbour Island, a long, thin island and its small neighbor with the pink beach.

What the route leaves out is a lot, and that is the point of keeping it light. The Exumas, with their string of cays, Pig Beach near Staniel Cay and the nurse sharks at Staniel Cay Marina, belong to a trip of their own.

So do the Abacos, where Hope Town sits on Elbow Cay and local ferries link the settlements. Bimini, close to Florida and small enough to walk, is another short escape, and so are Andros, with its enormous wilderness, and Grand Bahama, with Freeport and Lucayan National Park.

Five days works because the travel between the two stages is a single leg rather than a chain of connections. Spread across three or four islands, the same days would be mostly airports and docks. With two bases you can have a slow breakfast, a long beach afternoon and an unhurried dinner on most days. You also see how different the islands are, which is the best argument for coming back.

It is a less satisfying plan for someone who wants diving, deep-sea fishing or a kayaking expedition as the center of the trip. Those activities are all on offer across the islands, but they reward a stay built around them.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism also publishes downloadable itineraries designed around different travel styles, from beach escapes to island-hopping. This one is for people who want a city, a resort beach and a quiet pink-sand village in one stretch.

The itinerary stage by stage

The trip is two stages. Two nights go to Nassau and Paradise Island, then three nights and the days around them to Eleuthera and Harbour Island. Each stage has a different mood, and the move between them takes the better part of a morning.

Days 1 and 2: Nassau and Paradise Island

Arrive in Nassau and sleep on Paradise Island if you want a resort day, or in the capital if you prefer harbor views and shorter walks to the old streets. Paradise Island is a separate island joined to New Providence by two bridges over Nassau Harbour.

It is best known for Atlantis, which holds a water park, pools, a beach, restaurants, a walk-in aquarium and casinos. At the resort, Dolphin Cay is a marine habitat for manta rays, sea lions and rescued Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.

Give the first afternoon to Cabbage Beach, which runs east from Atlantis along the north shore and is described as one of the more beautiful beaches of Nassau and Paradise Island. It suits a long beach walk, a swim or an hour on a towel, and public access is by a path running north from Casino Drive along the east side of the RIU resort. Dinner can be a plate of cracked conch or conch salad, the dish you will see on menus across the islands.

Day 2 belongs to Nassau itself. Cross the bridge for the capital and walk down toward the harbor, where pastel government buildings, straw-market stalls and the cruise-port bustle share the same few blocks. Stop for fried snapper or a conch fritter, then spend the late afternoon back on the sand. The next morning starts early, so keep the last evening simple and pack before dinner.

Days 3 to 5: Eleuthera and Harbour Island

Eleuthera and Harbour Island lie east of Nassau, and the move takes the morning. The ferry runs only on set days, so day 3 should fall on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday.

Arrive on Harbour Island, which sits off the northeast coast of Eleuthera, and sleep in or near Dunmore Town, its only town. Once the capital of the Bahamas, it is now a village of pastel houses, small inns and restaurants within easy reach of the water.

The Pink Sand Beach runs along the eastern Atlantic side of the island and stretches for over three miles, wide enough that you can walk for a long time without feeling crowded. Travel magazines have often cited it as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Give day 3 afternoon and day 4 to it, with a long lunch in town and a late walk when the sand takes on its color.

Day 5 is for Eleuthera itself, depending on when you fly home. The island has wide rolling pink-sand beaches and big outcrops of ancient coral reef along its length.

Governor’s Harbour, founded in 1648 by William Sayle and the Eleutherian Adventurers, is a principal settlement and administrative center. The annual Pineapple Festival in Gregory Town is a reason to ask locals about timing. Then make your way back toward Nassau and your flight home.

Getting between stops

Leg How Time
Nassau to Spanish Wells and Harbour Island M/V Bo Hengy III high-speed ferry, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays Departs 8:00 a.m., reaches Spanish Wells 10:10 a.m.

The ferry is the link the plan is built around. It leaves Nassau in the morning, and check-in is from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. on departure days, so the night before is for packing and an early dinner.

Spanish Wells is the first stop, and the boat goes on to Harbour Island. Because it runs on three days only, the whole itinerary is set by it, and day 3 has to be one of them.

Bahamasair also lists a fare from Nassau to North Eleuthera starting at $80.50. Scheduled air service between islands is provided by certified domestic and international carriers, and you can also fly directly into an Out Island without going through Nassau. That is a different style of trip, because it means arriving in the islands on a different day and a different airport. For this plan, the Nassau connection keeps the capital in the picture.

The leg home from Harbour Island and Eleuthera to Nassau is by air or by sea, depending on your flight home. Because the ferry schedule runs from Nassau on set days, plan the return to Nassau before you book the international flight. Nassau is the gateway, so the final flight usually leaves from there.

The two bridges are the link between the islands, so a dinner on Paradise Island and a late return to town is worth planning.

On Harbour Island the village is small, and on Eleuthera you can ask your hotel about the distances. On Bimini, a different trip, the island is small enough to walk anywhere.

What to book before your 5 Days in the Bahamas

Settle the entry papers first. Passports are required by all persons entering the Bahamas, and U.S. citizens need a return or onward ticket. Visitors may also be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds.

Then pin down the transport. The ferry from Nassau to Spanish Wells and Harbour Island, the M/V Bo Hengy III, runs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and Bahamasair lists a fare to North Eleuthera. Those two decide your days. Beyond that, leave the beach hours free.

Adapting the route

Shorter or longer, the plan keeps the same two bases. With less time, drop Eleuthera and spend the days on Nassau and Paradise Island, or stay in Nassau for the first night, take the ferry to Harbour Island on the next departure day and sleep there. With more time, add a night to Harbour Island, since the village rewards a slow pace, and use the extra day for Eleuthera by road.

Nassau Average high Average low Rain days
January 79.4°F 65.1°F 4.3
July 90.8°F 76.4°F 12.4

In Nassau, winter is mild and mostly dry, so a January version of this route gives you long, comfortable days outdoors and cool evenings for dinner on a terrace. Summer is hot and showery, with rain on many days. Plan the beach in the morning, a museum or lunch indoors when a shower arrives, and the harbor walk at dusk.

The Atlantic hurricane season covers the autumn months, and the plan with a morning ferry and a few connections is the kind that a storm can disrupt. Keep the final days flexible and the flight home from Nassau, not from a small airport. On Grand Bahama, the hot, rainy season runs from May through October and the warm, dry season from November through April. That helps if you extend the trip to Freeport.

For families, Paradise Island is the easier base. Atlantis has pools, a water park and a walk-in aquarium, and Dolphin Cay is a marine habitat for manta rays, sea lions and rescued dolphins. Cabbage Beach is the long stretch for sandcastles. Then Harbour Island gives the children a three-mile beach with room to run. The sea differs from one beach to another, so ask at your hotel.

For a slower trip, give all five days to Harbour Island, or two days to Nassau and the rest to Eleuthera, and skip the ferry changes. Gregory Town, with its Pineapple Festival, and Governor’s Harbour make good day-long stops, and the island has more than 200 miles of coastline to explore. Travelers who want a longer, more adventurous trip can think about the Exumas, the Abacos or Andros, where culinary tours, kayaking, diving and deep-sea fishing are all on offer.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

Keep the Bahamian dollar in mind for small purchases and tips. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip in those months should leave flexibility in the last days.

Most crime, according to the State Department, occurs in Nassau and Freeport, so use ordinary city habits there and keep valuables out of sight on the beach. On Harbour Island and Eleuthera the pace is slower, and the best plan is the simplest one: a long lunch, a long walk and a late dinner.
