Every figure here is a 1991-2020 normal from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, served by Open-Meteo for one grid cell over Puerto Penasco. It is a model, not a thermometer: we found no published normals for the town’s three CONAGUA stations. June comes out at an average high of 86.7°F and a low of 75.5°F. A grid cell on this stretch of the Sea of Cortez may soften the desert coast’s sharp day-night swing, so read these as the cell’s numbers, not a reading from any one beach.
Only 0.1 days in an average June record 0.10 inch of rain or more, and 0.0 days reach a full inch. Put loosely, about one June in ten brings a single day of measurable rain. The month’s total is 0.02 inches, so a beach day needs no rain backup and the umbrella can stay home.
The gap between the 86.7°F average high and the 75.5°F average low is 11.2 degrees. Because the model may soften that swing, the shore itself could feel sharper after dark. Pack for hot afternoons, then add one light layer for after sunset.
On June 15 the sun rises at 5:28 a.m. and sets at 7:41 p.m., local Sonora time (America/Hermosillo), which makes 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight. A beach afternoon has until 7:41 p.m. to run.
Can you swim in Puerto Penasco in June? Sea temperature
The Sea of Cortez off Puerto Penasco averages 80.1°F in June, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would.
At 80.1°F you can swim for real instead of dipping and retreating. After sunset the sea probably still reads warmer than the 75.5°F night air, though the daily-maxima method flatters the water a little.
We found no June wind or swell data for Puerto Penasco, so we say nothing about chop. A marine forecast on the morning you swim covers it.
How busy is Puerto Penasco in June? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no month-by-month hotel-rate series for Puerto Penasco, so we rank no month as pricey or cheap. What we can chart is heat. June’s 86.7°F afternoons and 75.5°F nights sit below July’s 91.1°F and 82.7°F.
We could not verify a booking window for June, so we give no number of weeks. Most U.S. visitors still drive in through the Lukeville-Sonoyta border crossing, so for most the room is the reservation to lock in. Ask the property directly about June dates.
Sonora’s lodging tax is 3% of revenue under Article 122 of the state’s Ley de Hacienda, in the text published on December 26, 2025. It applies to lodging revenue, and we could not verify how it appears on a guest’s bill. Ask whether a quoted rate already includes it.
If one line gets extra money in June, make it the room. With lows averaging 75.5°F, the night is where June’s heat lingers, and July’s lows reach 82.7°F. Ask about air conditioning before you pay a deposit.
Things to do in Puerto Penasco in June

The sea crosses 80°F this month (80.1°F, against 75.2°F in May, per the Open-Meteo Marine API). With 14 hours 13 minutes of light and almost no rain, a full day on the sand is a safe plan.
Two swimming beaches anchor the days: Sandy Beach (Playa Mirador) and Cholla Bay, both on the Sea of Cortez. The town also sits at the edge of the Alto Golfo de California y Delta del Rio Colorado Biosphere Reserve, decreed a federal protected area on June 10, 1993. The reserve is the critical refuge of the vaquita marina, the world’s most endangered marine mammal, and of the totoaba fish.
At those beaches June changes the air more than the water. Highs gain 5.9 degrees on May (80.8°F to 86.7°F) and the sea gains 4.9 degrees (75.2°F to 80.1°F). Afternoon sand and air run hotter, and the water is the cooler of the two.
We found no fee schedule or opening hours for Sandy Beach or Cholla Bay, so we cannot say what is free. Ask your hotel before you drive out.
Puerto Penasco itinerary for June
Day one, Sandy Beach. Sunrise is at 5:28 a.m., and the early hours sit well below the 86.7°F average high. Take the morning swim at Sandy Beach (Playa Mirador), retreat to shade through the afternoon peak, and come back to the sand for sunset at 7:41 p.m.
Day two, Cholla Bay. Use the same rhythm, with the light layer in the bag for after dark. If a rare shower or rough water shows up (rain reaches 0.1 days in an average June), swap the two days and let the marine forecast pick which beach gets the calmer morning.

The last word
Settle how you arrive before you pick a date. Mar de Cortes International Airport went more than five years without scheduled commercial flights, and a new scheduled route resumed in mid-2026. We did not verify the carrier or the days, so confirm both before you book. Then pack for 86.7°F afternoons and plan to be on the sand at 7:41 p.m., when the June sun goes down.
