The air figures here are 1991-2020 normals from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA), taken at its Cancun station, number 23155. That station is on the mainland, about 8 miles across the channel, and it is the nearest with published normals: no station on the island has any. Read 83.7°F and 68.0°F as the local climate, not as a thermometer on the beach.
Rain of 10.9 days means measurable rain on roughly one January day in three, and a typical week holds two or three of them. The SMN does not publish the threshold behind its count, so we can’t line it up against a US-style rain day. Carry a thin shell and treat every outdoor plan as movable by a few hours.
Between the 83.7°F highs and the 68.0°F lows sit 15.7 degrees. Pack swimwear and light shirts for the day, plus one long layer for evenings and for the ferry deck.
On January 15 the sun rises at 7:25 a.m. and sets at 6:26 p.m. (converted from the UTC times in our source to Cancun time), about 11 hours 01 minutes of daylight. Put beach and snorkel time before late afternoon and keep the last hour of light for a walk into town.
Can you swim in Isla Mujeres in January? Sea temperature
The sea off Isla Mujeres averages 81.4°F in January, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would.
Yes, you can swim, and comfortably. The chill comes afterward: wet skin in evening air where lows reach 68.0°F. Bring a towel you can wrap around your shoulders.
We found no wave or wind figures for January, so we make no claim about chop. One geographic fact does help: the current running along the island’s east side breaks at the north tip, which is why Playa Norte is the calm beach.
How busy is Isla Mujeres in January? Crowds and prices
The one calendar fact we can source is that January falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10. We found no occupancy series or room-rate series for the island, so we crown no month expensive or cheap.
Ultramar ferries reach the Terminal Maritima APIQROO on the island from three Cancun departure points: Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas (kilometer 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcan) and Playa Caracol (kilometer 9.5). Tickets are valid for six months from purchase and non-refundable, and you are asked to arrive 30 minutes before departure. We have no lead-time data for rooms, so we give no number of weeks.
Quintana Roo’s lodging tax, the Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje, is 5% of the billed accommodation value, or 6% when a host or booking platform collects payment for a short-term rental. Separately, every foreign visitor entering the state owes Visitax under the state’s Ley de Derechos: 2.50 UMA, about 293 pesos at the UMA’s 2026 daily value.
The one spot where spending more changes what January gives you is a boat day to Isla Contoy, the national park and bird sanctuary north of the island. Trips are commonly sold from Isla Mujeres. CONANP’s own page did not load for us, so we state no visitor limits or fees: confirm both with the operator before you pay.
Things to do in Isla Mujeres in January
January lets you plan boat and beach days without the hurricane calendar in play, and still walk a clifftop at midday on a day that peaks at 83.7°F.
Playa Norte is the calm beach, facing the north tip. Punta Sur, at the southern tip, is a clifftop park with a sculpture garden and a lighthouse overlooking open water. Garrafon, a private reef park on the south end, is commonly sold as a snorkeling and activities day pass. Its own site did not load for us, so we quote no admission price, and neither do we for Punta Sur.
The water barely moves from month to month, but the air does. February’s highs run 2.5 degrees warmer than January’s, and you feel that on exposed ground such as the Punta Sur clifftop far more than you feel it in the sea.
Walking the main town costs nothing, and most visitors get around by golf cart, scooter or bicycle. We found no verified list of free-admission sights for January, so we name none.
Isla Mujeres itinerary for January
Day one. Take an early ferry from Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas or Playa Caracol, arriving 30 minutes ahead, and step off at the Terminal Maritima APIQROO. Rent a golf cart or bicycle in town, then spend the morning at Playa Norte while the sun rises toward its 7:25 a.m. start on the calendar and the water sits at 81.4°F. Eat lunch in town, ride out for a slow afternoon, and be off the sand before the 6:26 p.m. sunset.
Day two. Head south to Punta Sur in the morning for the sculpture garden and the lighthouse, then give the afternoon to a Garrafon snorkeling day or a boat to Isla Contoy, once you have confirmed prices and limits. If the day turns wet, do the town and errands first and hold the reef for the next dry window, since the water stays warm.

Highs climb from 83.7°F in January to 86.2°F in February, after 84.9°F in December. January’s 68.0°F lows are the coolest of the three. It brings 4.09 inches of rain against December’s 3.80 but fewer wet days (10.9 against 11.7), and February drops to 2.33 inches over 6.8 days. The air figures come from the SMN’s Cancun station (1991-2020). The sea, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024, slips from 82.2°F to 81.4°F to 80.7°F.
Moving four weeks to February gains you drier days (6.8 rain days) and warmer afternoons, and costs you 0.7 degrees of sea temperature. Moving back to December keeps the warmest water of the three, with 11.7 rain days. We found no room-rate series, so we can’t say whether either move saves money.
Is January a good time to visit Isla Mujeres?
Yes, if you want to swim in 81.4°F water with the hurricane season months behind you and you can live with a wet day about every third day. Before booking, read the U.S. State Department’s Mexico Travel Advisory, reissued May 29, 2026, which rates Quintana Roo Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution.’
Choose February if dry days matter more than the last degree of sea warmth: 6.8 rain days and 2.33 inches, with highs of 86.2°F.
