February on Isla Mujeres is a month for beach and boat days. Afternoons reach 86.2°F, the sea sits at 80.7°F, and the ferry from Cancun runs in a stretch of the calendar that hurricane season does not touch.

Isla Mujeres is small enough that most visitors skip the car for a golf cart, scooter or bicycle, and the main town is walkable. That keeps you outdoors most of the day, so the conditions from the weather station across the channel matter more here than they would on a city break.

Isla Mujeres weather in February

Every air figure here comes from the 1991-2020 normals of Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA), measured at its Cancun station, number 23155. That thermometer stands on the mainland about 8 miles across the channel. It is the nearest one with published normals, since no station on the island itself has any. February averages a high of 86.2°F and a low of 69.1°F, with 2.33 inches of precipitation.

The station counts 6.8 days of measurable rain in an average February, and the SMN sheet does not publish its rain threshold. That is roughly one day in four, so a week on the island averages a day or two of showers. January logged 10.9 such days.

The afternoon high and the overnight low sit 17.1 degrees apart. Pack shorts and swimwear for the day, and one light layer for evenings and the crossing back to the mainland.

On February 15 the day lasts about 11 hours 30 minutes. Sunset falls at 23:45 UTC, which is 6:45 p.m. in Cancun time. Anything that needs daylight, from a snorkel stop to a clifftop walk, has to be finished by then.

Can you swim in Isla Mujeres in February? Sea temperature

The sea surface off Isla Mujeres averages 80.7°F in February, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Sources built on full-day means will read slightly lower.

At 80.7°F the water is 5.5 degrees cooler than the 86.2°F afternoon air, so it is water you wade into rather than gasp at. It also sits within a degree of January’s 81.4°F.

We found no wind or swell series for February, so we give no speeds and cannot say when the water turns rough. One pointer is geographic: Playa Norte faces the north tip, where the current running along the east side breaks, and it is the calmest beach on the island. Check that east side with locals before swimming there.

How busy is Isla Mujeres in February? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Isla Mujeres, so we rank no month as the expensive one or the cheap one. What the calendar does settle is that February falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30. Storm risk is off the table for the plan.

Booking a room is where our data runs out: we could not verify how many weeks ahead February fills, so we give no lead time. The ferry is better documented. Ultramar boats dock at the Terminal Maritima APIQROO on the island, and tickets are valid for six months from purchase but non-refundable. Passengers are asked to arrive 30 minutes before departure.

Quintana Roo’s lodging tax, the Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje, is set at 5% of the billed accommodation value, or 6% when a host or booking platform collects payment for a short-term rental. Separately, every foreign visitor entering the state owes Visitax: 2.50 UMA, about 293 pesos at the UMA’s 2026 daily value. We did not read an exchange rate, so we give no dollar figure. The one line where spending more changes what February gives you is a boat day. With the sea at 80.7°F and rain on about one day in four, a paid day on the water is where the money buys the most. We could not read Garrafon’s day-pass price, and CONANP’s page for Isla Contoy did not load, so we state no fee for either.

Things to do in Isla Mujeres in February

February suits days spent outside: a high of 86.2°F, 2.33 inches of rain over the month, and none of the storm risk of June to November. January’s 10.9 rain days break up beach plans more often than February’s 6.8 do.

Playa Norte, at the north tip, is the calm-water beach, because the current along the east side breaks there. Punta Sur, at the southern tip, is a clifftop park with a sculpture garden and a lighthouse over open water. Garrafon is a private reef park on the south end, commonly sold as a snorkeling day pass. Isla Contoy, a national park and bird sanctuary north of the island, is reached on boat trips commonly sold from Isla Mujeres. We have no verified price for Garrafon and no visitor limit or fee for Isla Contoy.

The air moves with the month, and the water barely does. The sea reads 81.4°F in January, 80.7°F in February and 81.2°F in March, a spread under a degree, while afternoon highs step up 2.5 degrees each month. Snorkel stops behave much as they would in January or March. The walks and cart rides in the sun are what February changes.

We could not verify which sites charge admission, so we call nothing on the island free. The one free item we can source is on the ferry: infants under 12 months travel free with a boarding pass, and children under 1.20 meters ride at a reduced fare.

Isla Mujeres itinerary for February

Take an early Ultramar boat from Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas (kilometer 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcan) or Playa Caracol (kilometer 9.5). We did not read fares or a timetable, so check Ultramar first. From the Terminal Maritima APIQROO, rent a golf cart, scooter or bicycle and head to Playa Norte. Spend the midday peak of 86.2°F in the water or walking the town, then return to Playa Norte for the last hour before the 6:45 p.m. sunset.

On the second day, head south early for the clifftop walk at Punta Sur before the heat builds, then snorkel at Garrafon on the same end of the island. Or give the day to an Isla Contoy boat trip booked through an operator on the island. If rain sets in, and about one day in four brings it, move the outdoor stop to the next dry morning and keep the town for the wet hours.

Isla Mujeres in February vs January and March

Highs climb 2.5 degrees each month, from 83.7°F to 86.2°F to 88.7°F, and lows rise from 68.0°F to 69.1°F to 70.5°F. Rain falls from 4.09 inches in January to 2.33 in February and 1.52 in March, with rain days dropping from 10.9 to 6.8 to 5.4. The sea stays flat, and February’s 80.7°F sits 0.7 degrees under January and 0.5 under March. All three air columns come from the same SMN Cancun station.

Moving to January costs 2.5 degrees of afternoon warmth and adds 4.1 more days of rain, in exchange for a sea 0.7 degrees warmer. Moving to March adds 2.5 degrees of heat and removes 1.4 days of rain, so the trade is a hotter afternoon for a slightly drier week.

Is February a good time to visit Isla Mujeres?

Yes for anyone who wants beach and boat days without March’s extra 2.5 degrees: 86.2°F afternoons, an 80.7°F sea, rain on about one day in four. Less so for anyone who wants the surest dry streak, since March recorded 5.4 rain days. The U.S. State Department rates Quintana Roo Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution,’ in its Mexico Travel Advisory reissued May 29, 2026. Read it before you book.

If dry days matter most, pick March: 1.52 inches and 5.4 rain days against 2.33 inches and 6.8, with highs of 88.7°F.
