OCHO RIOS · AUGUST · 18.41° N
August hands Ocho Rios a hot, bath-warm version of itself: days averaging 89.5°F, nights that barely drop below 78, and a sea running 86.7°F off the bay. Rain turns up more often than in July, on 10.7 days of the month, without rewriting a week. For a vacation built around water time, those are strong numbers. The complication sits on a different calendar.
NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs the Atlantic season from June 1 to November 30, with the statistical peak on September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. August falls inside that window. It is not a month to write off, but it is a month where refundable rates and a look at the tropics before you fly belong in the planning, alongside the month-by-month risk.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · OCHO RIOS · AUGUST
August works if the trip is built on water and early starts: an 86.7°F sea, 89.5°F afternoons, rain on roughly one day in three, and a date inside the hurricane window.
AVG HIGH 89.5°F · SEA 86.7°F · 10.7 RAIN DAYS · INSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: the warmest swimming of the summer so far at 86.7°F, long water days, and 12 hours 47 minutes of daylight on August 15.
Think twice before: booking a room you cannot cancel, or planning midday climbs in a month that averages 89.5°F by afternoon.

Every figure here comes from a model reanalysis rather than an airport thermometer: ERA5, produced by ECMWF and served through Open-Meteo, computed for the grid cell at 18.41° N, 77.10° W over 1991-2020. A station reading on the north coast would differ, most of all on the overnight low. Sea temperatures come from a separate marine series and the storm dates from NOAA.
Ocho Rios weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | August in Ocho Rios |
|---|---|
| Average high | 89.5°F |
| Average low | 77.8°F |
| Total rainfall | 3.67 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 10.7 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.2 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 86.7°F |
| Daylight on Aug 15 | 12h 47m |
| Sunrise / sunset, Aug 15 | 5:49 am / 6:36 pm |
The ERA5 normals put the August average high at 89.5°F and the average low at 77.8°F, with 3.67 inches of rain across the month. A grid cell that size blends the waterfront with the ridges rising behind town into a single value, so the tenths give direction rather than a measurement taken at your hotel. Anyone comparing these figures with a station record from elsewhere on the coast should expect a gap of a few tenths in either direction.
Rain of at least a tenth of an inch falls on 10.7 August days, close to one day in three, while only 0.2 days in an average August deliver an inch or more, roughly one August in five with a single soaking day. Spread 3.67 inches over those 10.7 wet days and the typical wet day carries about a third of an inch. That is weather that moves an afternoon, not a vacation.
The day-to-night spread is 11.7°F, and at a low of 77.8°F nothing in the suitcase needs to be warm. What the bag needs is sun cover, a dry bag for the phone on those 10.7 wet days, and shoes you are willing to soak at the falls. Our Jamaica packing list carries the full version, including what the all-inclusive towel cupboard will not cover.
On August 15 the sun rises at 5:49 am and sets at 6:36 pm local time, giving 12 hours 47 minutes of daylight. Jamaica stays on UTC-5 all year and never shifts for daylight saving, so the clock you land with is the clock you keep. At 18° north the light goes quickly after sunset: anything that finishes at 6:30 finishes in the dark. Book boats, falls and viewpoints before 5 pm and put dinner after sundown.
Can you swim in Ocho Rios in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Ocho Rios averages 86.7°F in August in the Open-Meteo marine series, taken over 2015-2024. Read the fine print with the figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would show. Tables that publish a daily mean will land lower for the same month and the same water, and neither version is wrong.
In practice, water at that temperature does not cool you. The afternoon air averages 89.5°F and the sea sits within three degrees of it, so there is no acclimation, no shivering exit, no wetsuit for a dive. An hour of snorkeling costs nothing in body heat, which is why long swims are the natural shape of an August day here. The flip side: at 2 pm the sea gives no relief, and shade does.
We found no wave-height or wind series for the bay, so we give no swell figure and will not claim the water is flat. What we can document is the storm calendar: NOAA runs the Atlantic season June 1 to November 30, with activity concentrating from mid-August onward. That makes sea conditions a morning-of question for your boat operator rather than a week-ahead one, and it is the reason the hurricane-season page matters more in August than in March.
How busy is Ocho Rios in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
August sits inside the northern summer school holidays, which is the one thing about local demand we can state without a number. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. The calendar does say that the same weeks fall inside the hurricane window, and those two pressures pull in opposite directions. What we have verified about Jamaican budgets lives in the trip-cost guide, and none of it is a monthly hotel rate.
Lead time we cannot quantify either, so the booking advice is structural rather than numeric. Take rates you can cancel, and keep the flight and the room on separate cancellation clocks, because a storm that moves a week of the vacation rarely moves both the same way. Montego Bay is the usual airport for an Ocho Rios trip: our flights page covers the US gateways and the transfer guide covers the road at the other end.
We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate or how it applies to all-inclusive packages, so we give no percentage. The practical move is the same in any month: if the quote does not state that taxes and service are included, ask for the all-in number in writing before a deposit leaves your account, and ask again for any nights added on arrival.
One upgrade genuinely changes August, and it is the room’s relationship with the sun: shade, cross-ventilation, air conditioning that holds at 2 pm. In a month averaging 89.5°F by day and 77.8°F at night, a cheap room with a weak unit becomes a place you leave at dawn and return to at midnight. A private transfer rather than a shared van is the second line worth paying, since the shared version collects other passengers before it leaves.
Things to do in Ocho Rios in August: Dunn’s River Falls, the Luminous Lagoon and the Blue Mountains

August pushes almost everything into or beside the water, and the arithmetic supports the instinct: a sea at 86.7°F against air at 89.5°F makes the water the coolest thing on offer. Subtract the 10.7 wet days from 31 and roughly twenty dry days remain for a boat, a climb or a beach afternoon. That is a wider margin than the rain column suggests at first glance.
Dunn’s River Falls is the town’s headline climb and takes a morning. West along the coast at Falmouth, the Luminous Lagoon runs after dark, which a 6:36 pm sunset turns into an early evening rather than a late one. Inland and up, the Blue Mountains trade sea-level heat for altitude across a long day out. We could not verify current admission prices or boat fares for any of the three, so we quote none: each guide carries what we have checked.
None of those places change their water in August. What changes is the air around them and the hour you choose, because a falls climb at 9 am and the same climb at 1 pm are different days when the high averages 89.5°F. The month also puts rain on about a third of days, so leave one flexible slot in the week for the trip you would rather not do wet.
We found no free-admission dates and no verified August festival program for Ocho Rios, so we list none. Free is what the month gives everyone anyway: 12 hours 47 minutes of daylight on August 15, a sea at 86.7°F open from 5:49 am, and a 6:36 pm sunset you can watch from any stretch of sand in town. The island-wide list of what else is worth a day sits in things to do in Jamaica.
Ocho Rios in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Sunrise at 5:49 am means a 7 am breakfast already has light to spare. Put the falls or a boat between 8 and 11, before the air reaches its 89.5°F average high. Take lunch and the early afternoon under cover, noon to three. Back in the water at four, when the sea is still 86.7°F and the sun is off its peak. Sunset at 6:36 pm settles dinner: you eat after dark either way, so book the table for seven.
Day two, and the rain version. Give the second morning to the beach or a reef trip and the afternoon to town. If the date turns out to be one of the 10.7 wet days, swap the order: only 0.2 days a month reach an inch, so a covered lunch usually outlasts the shower. If the whole day goes, that is the day for the long drive inland, or for the indoor half of the island list. Our seven-day route shows where a spare day can be spent.
Ocho Rios in August vs July and September
| July | August | September | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 89.6°F | 89.5°F | 88.5°F |
| Average low | 77.6°F | 77.8°F | 77.2°F |
| Rainfall | 2.58 in | 3.67 in | 5.37 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 6.9 | 10.7 | 15.2 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 85.1°F | 86.7°F | 87.6°F |
The three months differ far less in heat than in water and rain. The average high moves 1.1°F across the set, from July’s 89.6°F down to September’s 88.5°F, and the low moves 0.6°F. Rain does the sorting: 2.58 inches over 6.9 wet days in July, 3.67 over 10.7 in August, 5.37 over 15.2 in September. The sea climbs steadily all summer, 85.1°F, then 86.7°F, then 87.6°F.
Move four weeks earlier and you buy dry days: July gives 3.8 fewer wet days and an inch less rain, with the sea 1.6°F cooler and the calendar sitting ahead of the season’s busiest stretch. Move four weeks later and you get the warmest water of the three at 87.6°F, paid for with 15.2 wet days, 5.37 inches and the September 10 peak of the Atlantic season. August lands between them on every line except the low, where its 77.8°F nights are the warmest.
Is August a good time to visit Ocho Rios?
Yes for swimmers, for families tied to school holidays, and for anyone whose week is built on water rather than on trails. No for travelers who want long hikes in comfort, no for anyone who cannot absorb a schedule change, and no for anyone about to click a non-refundable rate. The month’s weakness is not its weather record, it is the date’s position inside the storm calendar.
If the answer is no, prefer July over September. July runs 3.8 fewer wet days and an inch less rain for a high of 89.6°F that nobody could tell apart from August’s, and it sits just ahead of the mid-August to mid-October stretch that NOAA flags as the busiest. September is warmer in the water and heavier in every rain column, and it carries the September 10 peak. The wider best-time verdict ranks all twelve.
Among the three summer months, only August pairs a sea above 86°F with fewer than eleven wet days.
The last word
Two decisions carry this month and both can be made tonight. Take the rate you can cancel, and if the dates flex at all, weight them toward the first half of August: NOAA puts most Atlantic activity between mid-August and mid-October, which makes the early weeks the quieter side of the same window. Then set the alarm for the 5:49 am sunrise, spend the morning at the falls before the 89.5°F afternoon, and keep the 86.7°F sea for four o’clock.
