JAMAICA · DECEMBER · 18.49° N
The water off Falmouth glows on dark nights in any month. What December changes is the sky above it: 2.30 inches of rain across the month against November’s 3.54, and 5.1 days wet enough to measure instead of November’s 9.4. The boats go out after dark either way, and in December fewer of those evenings arrive soaked.
Warmth barely shifts. Average highs run 82.5°F, the sea surface offshore averages 83.2°F, and the sun is gone by 5:38 p.m. on the 15th, so the glow trip sits before dinner rather than after it. The complication is the calendar at the end of the month, when Christmas and New Year land on fixed dates and everybody’s plans converge.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · LUMINOUS LAGOON · DECEMBER
December gives the lagoon roughly two thirds of November’s rain, water within about two degrees of it, and full darkness early enough to fit the boat and dinner into one evening.

Luminous Lagoon weather in December: average highs, lows and rain days

The air figures come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, 1991–2020, for the grid cell at 18.4936° N, 77.6559° W, sitting over Falmouth about 19 miles (30 km) east of Montego Bay. That is a model cell, not a thermometer at an airport, and the distinction matters when you compare it with station normals published elsewhere. Every air figure here comes from that one cell: average high 82.5°F, average low 73.7°F, 2.30 inches of rain across the month.
Spread over 31 days, 5.1 measurable rain days works out to roughly one day in six with at least a tenth of an inch. In practice that reads as a shower rather than a washout, and it rarely touches the part of the day you came for, since the boats run after nightfall. Plan the outdoor half of your day before mid-afternoon and keep the second evening loose.
Between the 82.5°F high and the 73.7°F low there are 8.8 degrees, and you feel most of them on open water after dark, with the breeze added. A long-sleeved layer and something for wet feet cover it. Nobody needs a jacket for the town of Falmouth at noon, and the packing guide deals with the rest of the suitcase.
On December 15 the cell gets 11 hours and 04 minutes of daylight, with the sun down at 5:38 p.m. local time. Full dark follows within about 40 minutes, so a tour leaving at 6:30 p.m. is already a night tour and you are back on land in time to eat at a normal hour.
Can you swim at the Luminous Lagoon in December? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off the lagoon averages 83.2°F in December, drawn from the Open-Meteo Marine API as the mean of daily maxima over 2015–2024. That is the warmest reading of each day averaged together, so it runs a shade above a true 24-hour mean, and other tables that publish a 24-hour figure will sit a little lower. We could not verify a separate temperature for the brackish water inside the lagoon, so 83.2°F describes the sea, not the lagoon basin.
At that temperature nobody stands on the step deciding. You walk in, you stay in, and an hour in the water in the middle of the day costs you nothing in comfort. The evening swim is the one where the 73.7°F air starts to register when you climb out, which is why the towel matters more than the wetsuit.
On wind and swell our sources are silent: we found no wind or wave series for this stretch of coast in December, so we give no figures and no averages. North-coast operators cancel on conditions rather than on rain, so confirm the sailing with the boat on the day and keep a spare evening in the plan.
How busy is the Luminous Lagoon in December? Crowds and prices
December straddles two different months. The first two weeks are ordinary dry-season weeks on Jamaica’s north coast. The last two carry Christmas and New Year, fixed dates that pull flights, rooms and evening tours in the same direction at once. Beyond that calendar fact we are cautious: we found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for Trelawny or Montego Bay, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive.
Treat the booking advice as judgment rather than measurement. For a trip before the 20th, six weeks (est.) of lead time is usually comfortable on both the room and the boat. For the holiday fortnight, work backward from your flight instead: US departures fill first, and the boat is the easiest piece to slot in once the dates are fixed.
We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax or any tourism levy, so no percentage appears here. What we have actually priced sits in the trip-cost guide, and the airport end of the budget in transfers.
The one line where paying more changes the month is distance. With the boats leaving after 6 p.m., a bed in Negril turns the return into a long drive in the dark on roads you met that morning, and our driving guide explains why that is the part to avoid. A room within reach of Falmouth buys back the evening rather than the view.
Things to do at the Luminous Lagoon in December

What December offers that November does not is a dry evening you can plan on. The same water, the same boats, and 5.1 measurable rain days instead of 9.4, with total rainfall down from 3.54 inches to 2.30. Over a four-night stay that difference is the one between building the trip around a single clear night and simply picking one.
The lagoon sits at Falmouth, at 18.49° N, 77.66° W, about 19 miles (30 km) east of Montego Bay, so a day that starts on the beach can end on the water without a transfer of any length. We could not verify the operators’ fares or their sailing times, so we quote neither: book direct. For the daytime half, Montego Bay is the nearest full day out and our national shortlist covers the north coast beyond it.
What the month moves is the air, not the water. Sea surface goes 85.3°F in November, 83.2°F in December, 82.3°F in January, a spread of three degrees across an entire quarter, while measurable rain days nearly halve between November and December. That gap is the whole argument for the date rather than the place.
On free admission we have nothing to report: we found no free-entry day and no dated December event at the lagoon, so we name none rather than guess. What December hands over at no charge is morning, with sunrise at 6:34 a.m. and two cool hours before the 82.5°F part of the day arrives.
The Luminous Lagoon in December: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Out by 7 a.m., with sunrise at 6:34 the beach belongs to almost nobody. Swim between 10 and noon while the sea sits at 83.2°F, eat inside during the 82.5°F stretch of early afternoon, then take the flat hours from 3 to 5 for Falmouth’s streets. Sunset at 5:38 p.m., full dark around 6:15, boat at 6:30, dinner by 8:30.
Day two goes inland or west: the Martha Brae valley behind the town, or Montego Bay for a proper lunch and an afternoon indoors. If the sky turns, remember the odds are one wet day in six, and the shower that ruins a beach morning has usually cleared long before a 6:30 p.m. departure. Hold the second evening in reserve and the glow trip has two chances instead of one.
The Luminous Lagoon in December vs November and January
| November | December | January | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 83.6°F | 82.5°F | 82.0°F |
| Average low | 75.2°F | 73.7°F | 72.3°F |
| Precipitation | 3.54 in | 2.30 in | 2.02 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 9.4 | 5.1 | 5.0 |
| Sea surface | 85.3°F | 83.2°F | 82.3°F |
Across the three months the air moves 1.6 degrees on the high and 2.9 on the low, which no visitor will notice. Rain does the sorting instead: November delivers 3.54 inches over 9.4 measurable days, December 2.30 inches over 5.1, January 2.02 inches over 5.0. The sea cools steadily through the same stretch, from 85.3°F to 82.3°F, all three figures being averages of daily maxima from the marine dataset rather than the ERA5 cell.
Shift four weeks back and you gain 2.1 degrees of sea and lose 4.3 measurable rain days to dodge. Shift four weeks forward to January and you gain barely a tenth of a rain day, lose 0.9 degrees of water, and leave the holiday dates behind you. December is the month where those two curves cross.
Is December a good time to visit the Luminous Lagoon?
Yes for anyone with a short trip and one night to spend on the water: 5.1 wet days out of 31 means the plan rarely needs a rescue. No for travelers whose dates land between the 20th and the 2nd without a booking already in hand, and no for anyone whose whole reason for coming is the warmest possible swim, since November’s water runs two degrees above it.
If the answer is no, take January. Rainfall drops to 2.02 inches, measurable days to 5.0, the fixed holiday dates are gone, and the cost is 0.9 degrees of sea and 1.4 degrees off the average low. Our year-round verdict sets both months against the rest of the calendar.
No other month pairs water still above 83°F with fewer than six measurable rain days.
The last word
Book the room within driving distance of Falmouth first and let everything else arrange itself around a 5:38 p.m. sunset. For the worry that keeps people awake, the numbers are mild: an inch of rain or more falls on 0.3 day in an average December, roughly one December in three getting a single genuine soaking. Keep the second evening free and the odds are on your side by a wide margin.
