Dunn’s River Falls in September: Weather, Sea Temperature and Rain Days

September brings the warmest sea of the late summer to the foot of Dunn’s River Falls: 87.6°F, against 86.7°F in August and 87.3°F in October. The air sits at 88.5°F by day and 77.2°F at night, and 5.37 inches of rain fall across the month.

What the month takes back is dry dates. Rain of 0.10 inch or more turns up on 15.2 days in an average September, against 10.7 days in August. Move the trip four weeks earlier and you give up 0.9°F of sea warmth to gain four and a half drier dates.

Every figure here comes from one grid cell, 18.4074N 77.103W, sitting over Ocho Rios about two miles east of the falls, near enough that the same weather reaches both. None of it is a thermometer reading taken at the gate. For the rest of the trip, Ocho Rios covers the base town, the month-by-month verdict covers the full year, and the transfer guide covers the drive in from the airport.

An average September here runs 88.5°F by day, 77.2°F overnight, with 5.37 inches of rain. Those normals are Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis for 1991-2020, computed for a grid cell rather than measured at an airport station, and we could not find a station record at the falls to set beside them. Where a model and a real thermometer disagree, the overnight low is usually where the gap shows.

Rain of 0.10 inch or more reaches the ground on 15.2 dates, so roughly one September day in two records something. Spread the 5.37 inches across those dates and the average wet day delivers about 0.35 inch, which is a shower measured in minutes. Genuine downpours are rare: only 0.3 day a year clears an inch, or one such day every three Septembers.

The spread between day and night is 11.3°F, and the bottom of it is 77.2°F, so nothing in the bag needs to be warm. Pack for wet instead: a second pair of shoes that dries, a dry bag for the phone during the climb, and something with sleeves for the sun rather than the chill. Our packing guide carries the full list.

On September 15 the day runs 12 hours 16 minutes, sunrise at 5:55 a.m. and sunset at 6:11 p.m. in local time, since Jamaica holds UTC-5 all year and never shifts for daylight saving. That puts real light on the water by six in the morning and takes it away fast after six in the evening.

Can you swim in Dunn’s River Falls in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off the falls averages 87.6°F in September. That number is the mean of daily maxima across 2015-2024 from the Open-Meteo Marine API, which makes it a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would be. Other sea tables using a full-day mean will show something lower for the same water, and we serve the figure we can source.

At that temperature there is no entry shock and no reason to hurry back out. An hour in the water costs you nothing in body heat, which is the difference between a swim and a dip for small children. One caveat we cannot close: we found no measurement for the river water inside the climb itself, only for the sea at its mouth, so no figure for the cascade appears here.

Our sources carry no wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so we give no swell figure and no flat-water promise. September does fall inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and the dates, the odds and the booking rules live in our hurricane-season guide.

How busy is Dunn’s River Falls in September? Crowds and prices

We found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month cheap and no month busy. What we can date is the calendar: September falls after the US summer school holidays and well before the December season, and it carries the hurricane season across all thirty days.

Without a booking curve we will not invent a number of weeks. What we would do instead is hold a rate that cancels, confirm the week before departure, and treat the flight the same way, since flights from the US and the ground transfer are the two lines you cannot rebook on the day.

We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax rate, so no percentage appears above. Our trip cost guide carries the figures we have been able to price, and it is the page to read before you set a nightly budget.

One line is worth paying up for in this month specifically: air conditioning. With lows averaging 77.2°F and humidity to match, a fan-only room asks a great deal of three or four nights. A refundable rate is the second, for the reason the rain table gives.

Things to do at Dunn’s River Falls in September: the climb, the beach and Ocho Rios

Measured against its two neighbors, September hands you the warmest water of the three at 87.6°F while the air has already come off August’s 89.5°F peak. That combination, warm sea and slightly gentler afternoons, is what the month is for. It does not hand you October’s light or August’s dry dates.

The climb and the cove at its foot are the reason anyone comes, and Ocho Rios sits about two miles east for lunch, shade and a room. We could not verify the current admission fee or the gate hours at the falls, so we quote neither: confirm both with the operator when you book. For everything beyond the cascade, the national things-to-do guide and the Ocho Rios page do that work.

Across August, September and October the sea barely moves: 86.7°F, 87.6°F, 87.3°F, under a degree of spread. The air moves 3.3°F over the same stretch and the rain almost doubles, from 3.67 inches to 6.19. So the month changes how the walk up feels and how often you get wet from above, not how the swim feels.

Our sources list no free-admission day at the falls in September, so we promise none. What costs nothing is the light: usable sun from 5:55 a.m., and a beach hour before it goes at 6:11 p.m.

Dunn’s River Falls in September: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts early because the light does. Be at the falls soon after opening, with the climb done before the air works toward 88.5°F. Late morning, drive the two miles into Ocho Rios for lunch under a roof. Keep the middle of the afternoon slow. From four o’clock the sea is at 87.6°F and the day still has light until 6:11 p.m., which is the best two hours you get.

Day two goes to the town and the coast road, with the falls as a second swim if the first climb went well. When the sky closes in, remember that our data gives a monthly count of 15.2 wet dates and not the hour they arrive, so leave the indoor half of the day unbooked. An evening run to the Luminous Lagoon along the north coast is the after-dark card to keep in hand.

Dunn’s River Falls in September vs August and October

Measure August September October
Average high 89.5°F 88.5°F 86.2°F
Average low 77.8°F 77.2°F 76.2°F
Precipitation 3.67 in 5.37 in 6.19 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 10.7 15.2 16.2
Sea surface 86.7°F 87.6°F 87.3°F

Air temperature falls steadily across the three months, 89.5°F to 88.5°F to 86.2°F, while rainfall climbs the other way, 3.67 inches to 5.37 to 6.19. The sea refuses to follow either curve and stays inside a single degree, peaking in September at 87.6°F. Air and rain figures come from the same ERA5 normals; the sea row comes from the marine API over 2015-2024.

Shift four weeks back to August and you buy 1.70 fewer inches of rain and 4.5 fewer wet dates, paying with a degree more heat and 0.9°F less in the water. Shift four weeks forward to October and the days cool by 2.3°F, but one more date in the month turns wet and the total climbs to 6.19 inches.

Is September a good time to visit Dunn’s River Falls?

For a trip built around water, yes. An 87.6°F sea, 77.2°F nights and 12 hours 16 minutes of daylight make a swimming holiday that works even with a soaked afternoon in it. For a trip with fixed dates, one shot at the climb and no refundable rate, September is the harder month of the three: 15.2 wet dates leaves real room for your two to be among them.

If that describes your trip, take August. It runs 3.67 inches against 5.37, 10.7 wet dates against 15.2, and the water is only 0.9°F cooler. The cost is heat: 89.5°F by day and 77.8°F at night, a degree up on September in both directions.

What September alone gives, among these three, is the warmest sea we can measure at 87.6°F while the air has already stepped back from August’s peak.

The last word

Decide this one on the water rather than the sky. Subtract the wet dates from the month and 14.8 dates in an average September record less than 0.10 inch of rain, which is plenty of trip if nothing is nailed down. Hold a rate you can cancel, put the climb in the first morning while the air is still short of 88.5°F, keep the sea for four o’clock, and read our post-Melissa update before you lock in the north coast.
