Sifnos Hotels: Where to Stay on a Quiet Cycladic Island

Pick Apollonia or Artemonas if you want village life and plan to ride the buses. Pick Platis Gialos if you want to wake up beside the sea. Sifnos is small, but its villages feel very different from one another, so your base shapes the whole trip.

What are the best areas to stay in Sifnos?

Sifnos has eight main bases: Apollonia, Artemonas, Platis Gialos, Faros, Vathi, Kamares, Kastro and Cheronissos. The hilltop villages sit in the middle of the island, the beach bases line the south coast, and the port is on the northwest coast. Long dinners and wandering lanes point to the hills. Swimming before breakfast points to the coast.

Apollonia

Apollonia is the island's capital, built like an amphitheater around three hills. Its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and narrow streets open onto shops and restaurants. "Main village" is a relative term here: next to the main villages on Santorini or Paros, Apollonia is peaceful and quiet.

After dark, the pedestrian lane called To Steno becomes the focus of the island. Restaurants, small bars and boutiques line it, and a short stretch stays busy into the small hours in summer. Staying here means you can walk home from dinner with no bus timetable or late scooter ride to plan around.

There's no beach in town, but Apollonia is the hub of the bus network, and a beach is about 20 minutes away. Check the map before you book. Some places listed as Apollonia sit well beyond the pedestrian center, and a short distance on a screen can mean a long walk beside a busy road. The neighboring villages of Pano Petali and Kato Petali are smaller and largely residential. Depending on the exact spot, you can often walk to the Steno from either one.

Nival Boutique Hotel is right in the center, with a pool, and restaurants, shops and nightlife are steps away. Stamna is one of the newer arrivals, a cluster of low stone buildings among olive trees just outside town. Petali Village Hotel is the old-school option, with traditional rooms, gardens and a pool, set in Pano Petali between Apollonia and Artemonas. Nostos Sifnos offers plain, comfortable rooms arranged around a garden on the outskirts of Apollonia, and walking into the center along the road takes roughly ten minutes. It suits travelers who would sooner spend on dinners than on facilities.

Artemonas

Artemonas sits just north of Apollonia, and the two almost merge. Restaurants and bars are spread through the village instead of gathered on one street. Dinner means a stroll through quiet residential lanes to a place you picked in advance.

Artemonas suits travelers who want a central base and the bus but would prefer to sleep among old houses and gardens, away from Apollonia's bars. Like Apollonia, it has no sea. The village is also spread out, and some hotels sit well beyond the center, so check how far your exact address is from restaurants and the bus stop.

There's an infinity pool over the Aegean, a botanical spa and the Bostani restaurant. It's easy to abandon the day's plans here, so book it for the hotel itself.

Platis Gialos

A long, shallow sandy beach curves along the south coast here, with hotels, apartments, beach bars and restaurants following the bay. It's busier and more developed than Faros or Vathi, the other southern beach bases, but it still feels in scale with Sifnos.

The appeal is simple. The beach is an easy walk from most of the bay, and there are enough good restaurants around the water that you don't have to head up to Apollonia every evening. Omega3 is a tiny fish and wine bar on the strip, where the seafood is cured, caramelized, smoked or cooked sous-vide. Book ahead.

Verina Terra is a quiet pool-and-garden hotel just back from the beach. Enalion Suites is right on the sand, with spacious rooms and sea-view balconies. Ammos Sifnos Village has whitewashed rooms and apartments around small courtyards a few steps from the beach. Edem Hotel sits behind a leafy garden. Giaglakis Rooms, with shaded terraces, is one of the best values on the bay.

Faros

Faros is a quiet fishing village on the southeast coast, with a small sandy beach, calm turquoise water and a few tavernas. Two more small bays, Glyfos and Fassolou, are close by. It's slower than Platis Gialos and suits couples who want peace. You'll want a car here. NOS Hotel sits along the water, with sea views, a modern design, a restaurant and a spa. It isn't on the sand, but Faros and Fassolou beaches are a few minutes' walk away.

Vathi

Vathi is a beautiful beach on the southwest coast, with beach clubs and a handful of tavernas at the water's edge. It's popular in summer and can be crowded, with less shade than other beaches. It also sits tucked away from the other villages, and the winding roads can make getting around take longer than a map suggests. Plan on a car, and expect to explore a little less from here. Elies Resort is the island's full-service resort. Villa Verina suits big families or groups, with a pool, water sports gear and a tennis court.

Kamares

Kamares is the port, where ferries from Athens and other islands come in. It has a large sandy beach shared with boats, plenty of restaurants and hotels, and a good range of tourist facilities. Many boat tours leave from here. The sandy beach of Agia Marina is a walk along the boardwalk from the ferry. Kamares is a lively, popular spot on the island, though Sifnos as a whole isn't very touristy.

Kamares suits short stays and anyone who wants to walk off the ferry to a bed. Arcos Suites Sifnos is a recently opened hotel within walking distance of the ferry. Sifnos House has quiet, simple rooms set back from the port, and it suits long weekends or families with young children. Apsila Pool Suites has bay views and private plunge pools. Voya Sifnos is a stylish boutique hotel close to the beach.

Kastro

Kastro is a cliff-top village and one of the most historic on the island. It's a base for food lovers willing to accept a few practical compromises. Far below the cliffs, a chapel sits on a rock by the sea. Along the cliffside path are Loggia, a relaxed wine bar, and Kavos Sunrise, a longtime local bar.

Cheronissos

Cheronissos is a remote bay at the northern tip of the island, and staying here takes more commitment. It's around 30 to 35 minutes by road from the port. A bus goes there, but service is limited.

Which area is best for first-timers?

Apollonia or Platis Gialos. Apollonia has the island's best mix of restaurants, bars and bus links, so every day can go somewhere different. Platis Gialos puts the beach and dinner within walking distance.

Where should couples stay?

Choose Artemonas for a romantic splurge at Verina Astra and Faros for quiet. Platis Gialos works for beach days with a lively evening, and Apollonia for nights out on the Steno.

Where should families stay?

Platis Gialos and Kamares. Both have beaches with restaurants close by. Platis Gialos has shallow, child-friendly water, and many of its apartments and suites have kitchenettes, which helps with mornings and snacks. Kamares is easy because the ferry arrives right there.

Where should budget travelers stay?

Look to Apollonia first. Simple rooms like Nostos Sifnos keep costs down, and the center has places to eat for a range of budgets. On the beach, Giaglakis Rooms in Platis Gialos is the good-value pick.

Where should you stay without a car?

Apollonia. Buses run from there to Kamares, Platis Gialos, Faros, Vathi and Kastro, so you can reach most of the island without changing buses. Kamares is the other easy choice, since it's where you arrive and leave. Its bus stop is on the coastal road within a few hundred meters of the port, and the ride to Apollonia takes about 10 minutes.

Do you need a car on Sifnos?

A car helps a lot. Buses run a lean timetable and taxis are few and pricey, so the island is easiest to enjoy with a rental car or ATV. Rental agencies are in Apollonia and at the port. From the port, Apollonia is 3.5 miles (5.7 km) and Platis Gialos 8.8 miles (14.1 km).

In summer, pre-book a transfer. Many hotels run their own minibus or shuttle to the port, so message yours before you arrive.
