How to Get to Lefkada: Bus, Car, Plane and Ferry Explained

Lefkada is joined to the mainland by a causeway and a floating bridge, so you can drive onto the island without taking a ferry, which makes getting there simpler than most people expect. Most visitors fly into Athens and continue by rental car or bus across the mainland and over a short bridge. In summer, a flight to Aktion Airport near Preveza puts you about 20 minutes from the island, if a route from your European connecting city fits.

How do you get to Lefkada from Athens?

Lefkada has no airport, and flights from Athens to Aktion can't be counted on, so from the capital you travel by road: rental car, KTEL bus or private transfer. The route follows a toll motorway along the Gulf and crosses the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, the longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge in the world. The final stretch carries you onto the island.

By rental car

You can pick up a car at Athens airport or in the city. Plan on roughly four hours of driving, depending on Athens traffic, and leave a cushion if you have a boat or a check-in to meet, since the trip can stretch to five. The motorways are in good shape and often quiet, you can pay tolls with cash or a card, and there are rest stops along the route.

The drive is worth breaking up if you have time. The Corinth Canal, Corinth and the northern Peloponnese all sit on or near the route. If you don't mind a much slower drive, the northern shore of the Gulf of Corinth takes you past Delphi. One-way rentals are possible but often expensive.

By bus

The KTEL bus runs from Kifissos Bus Station (100 Kifissou Ave.), also called KTEL Terminal A, to Lefkada Town. From Athens airport, take a taxi or the X93 bus, which runs every 30 minutes and goes straight to the terminal. Allow up to an hour on the X93 at peak traffic times.

The Lefkada bus uses bay 39, with a taxi rank and local buses right beside it. There's no toilet on board, so go before you board. Schedules change with the season, so check the day before you travel.

A one-way ticket costs €37 and a return about €70 (2026), far less than a private taxi.

By private transfer or taxi

Firms run car and minibus transfers between Athens airport and Lefkada. They aren't cheap, but split among a small group they can make sense, and you get door-to-door comfort with the Gulf scenery out the window.

Is it better to fly or take the bus to Lefkada?

It depends on your season and your route. Aktion Airport, the closest to Lefkada, receives mostly summer charter flights from many European cities and from Tel Aviv. Reports conflict on domestic service: one says there are no Athens-Aktion flights, another mentions year-round connections to Athens. Check current schedules before counting on one. Flights to Athens run daily all year and usually cost less than direct flights to Aktion.

Thessaloniki is a third gateway. It's slightly farther than Athens, but you skip Athens traffic, a good motorway runs the whole way, and one or two buses a day make the trip. Tickets from Lefkada cost €39 one way and €74 return (2026).

Here's how to choose:

  • First trip: take the bus if you're traveling light and like to sit back. Rent a car if you want to stop along the way.
  • Family with luggage: a car or a transfer is easier than the bus.
  • Tight budget: the bus, easily.
  • Short on time: fly to Aktion if a summer flight fits, then take a short bus or taxi ride.

How do you get to Lefkada from Preveza airport?

Aktion Airport sits about 12 miles (20 km) from Lefkada Town, a drive of 20 to 30 minutes. Taxis are usually waiting at the rank outside and charge around 70 euros to Lefkada Town, with higher fares to other parts of the island, so it's smart to confirm the price before you get in. Several car rental companies have desks at the airport, and you can reserve ahead with Aktion as your pick-up point.

A bus runs from the airport to Preveza, Lefkada, Vonitsa and other destinations, and you buy tickets from the driver. Check the timetable against your flight time before you rely on the bus.

From Preveza town, KTEL buses leave Leoforos Ionion station for Lefkada, 2 to 6 a day in summer, and the ride takes about 40 minutes. The fare to Preveza is €4 (2026).

Do you need a ferry to reach Lefkada?

No. The canal crossing is a road link. Most of the day and night, you simply roll across without stopping. The floating bridge opens to let boats pass, usually on the hour during summer days and less often in winter. The crossing itself takes a couple of minutes, with rarely any delay outside busy periods, but if you're driving, don't schedule a tight connection right on the hour.

Ferries come into play mainly if you're island-hopping or traveling from Italy. Igoumenitsa and Patra are the Greek arrival ports for ferries from Italy. Igoumenitsa is about 90 minutes from Lefkada by car or bus. The bus from Lefkada costs €13.30 one way to Igoumenitsa and €18 to Patra (2026).

How do you get to Lefkada from other islands?

Ferries link Lefkada with its Ionian neighbors, mostly in summer. Nidri is the main port for connections to nearby islands, and Vasiliki is the other key harbor. The companies are Ionion Pelagos, West Ferry and F/B Meganisi.

In summer, the crossing from Fiskardo on Kefalonia to Vasiliki takes 1 hour, as does the crossing from Frikes on Ithaca. Slower routes run to Lefkada Town from Sami on Kefalonia and Pisaetos on Ithaca. From Nidri, Meganisi is about a 30-minute sail. A summer ferry also links Lefkada with Paxos and Corfu. In high season, you can also fly into Kefalonia, head to Fiskardo and take the ferry across.

No Ionian island connects to the Aegean islands, such as the Cyclades or Crete. If you're coming from Santorini or Mykonos, go back through Athens.

How do you book transport to Lefkada?

Buy bus tickets in advance, especially in summer, preferably by phone. The Lefkada station is at +30 26450-22364 and the Athens station at +30 21051-50108. If you buy online, print the ticket before boarding. At Kifissos, the Lefkada ticket office sits right next to bay 39, not in the main ticket hall where other destinations are sold.

Ride with a valid ticket. On Greek public transportation, traveling without one, with the wrong one or without validating it can bring a fine of up to 60 times the basic fare. Ferry tickets also sell out, so book those ahead in summer.

How do you get from the bus or bridge to your hotel?

The Athens bus ends in Lefkada Town, which is small enough to cross on foot in about twenty minutes. From the town's bus station, buses fan out across the island. Some villages get several a day and others far fewer, and timetables change often. Taxis wait at ranks in Lefkada Town and Nidri and come by phone anywhere on the island. Agios Nikitas, for example, is about 20 minutes away by car.

Nidri makes a good first night if you want a relaxed start. You won't need a car there, and plenty of restaurants and cafes sit within walking distance of the beach.

To explore, rent a car. The island runs about 22 miles (35 km) from north to south, so you can cross it in under an hour, but public buses stick mostly to main routes. A car is almost essential if you stay in the interior, and rental agencies cluster near the airport, in Lefkada Town and in Nidri.

Does the season change the trip to Lefkada?

The season shapes the journey as much as the weather does. Flights into Aktion are mostly a summer affair, with charters from many European cities, so off-season visitors usually come by road from Athens. Forest fires are common in the dry summer months and occasionally close roads, so check local news before a long drive.

What should Americans know before driving or traveling?

U.S. citizens may enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you should carry it or another photo ID at all times.

Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the European Union. Talking or texting on a phone while driving is illegal, and police run random alcohol tests. Thieves in Greece are known to break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so it's wise to keep bags out of sight.

Transportation strikes and demonstrations can disrupt traffic, buses, taxis, seaports and airports, often with little notice. The day before you leave, confirm your departure time and bay, check for strike news, and keep your printed ticket and passport in your day bag.
