Flights to Mykonos: How Americans Get There, and When to Book

Most travelers from the U.S. reach Mykonos in two flights: an overnight nonstop to Athens, then a hop of about 45 minutes to Mykonos Airport (JMK). No scheduled flight goes nonstop from the United States to the island, so plan on one connection. Take an evening flight out of New York and you arrive on the island around early afternoon the next day, since Greece runs seven hours ahead.

What's the usual route from the U.S. to Mykonos?

Fly nonstop to Athens, then connect. Most of these routes are seasonal, from spring to autumn.

Two cities join the list for summer 2027. Delta adds Detroit, running three times a week through late October. Alaska Airlines adds Seattle, the first nonstop to Athens from the West Coast. From Los Angeles or San Francisco, most travelers still connect through a U.S. gateway or a European hub. Airlines confirm their summer schedules over the winter, so check the current flight for your dates.

Which European cities connect easily to Mykonos?

Flights from European hubs to the island thin out from October. For a fall trip, confirm that your hub still flies to the island on your dates.

How long is the flight from Athens to Mykonos?

About 45 minutes. Aegean Airlines and SKY Express both offer several flights a day between Athens and Mykonos. That frequency makes the flight the easy choice for families, short stays and tight schedules. Thessaloniki also has a connection to the island, of about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

How much time should you leave for the connection in Athens?

Leave three hours, and four on a peak Friday or Saturday. Athens is where you first enter Europe, and the continent's Entry/Exit System has been running in full since April 2026. Border lines can get long at busy times, so give yourself a generous cushion.

Put both flights on one ticket. The other safe option is to break the trip with an overnight stay and fly out the next morning.

Is it better to fly or take the ferry from Athens?

Fly if your schedule is tight or you're traveling with young children. Take the ferry if you want a night in the city and like the idea of sailing into the island. High-speed boats take about two and a half to four hours, and slower ferries take longer. They leave from two ports:

  • Piraeus has more sailings, about a dozen direct ferries a day with Seajets, Blue Star Ferries, Fast Ferries and Golden Star Ferries. The port is about 45 minutes from Athens airport by car or taxi.
  • Rafina is much closer to the airport. In summer, Seajets runs up to four daily routes from Rafina that serve Mykonos along with Andros, Tinos, Paros and Naxos.

All the big ferries dock at the New Port in Tourlos, 2 to 3 km (about 1.5 miles) north of Mykonos Town. Buses, taxis and the SeaBus, a small boat across the harbor, connect it with town.

Helicopters and ferries both have real luggage limits, so check the allowance before you pack sports equipment. The summer meltemi wind can disrupt ferry sailings, so it helps to keep your arrival and departure days flexible.

When should you book?

Most airlines release their seats around eleven months ahead, so summer 2027 flights are open for booking now. Hold your accommodation first, then book the flights around it. For a villa, book nine to twelve months ahead for the summer season and a bit later for spring and autumn. July and August fill first, and from June through August flights and hotels are packed. Arriving without a reservation in those months is a gamble.

April, May, September and October are calmer. The weather and the sea are still warm, the crowds are lighter, and deals on rooms and activities are easier to find.

What happens when you land?

Mykonos Airport sits about 2.5 miles (4 km) from Mykonos Town, a drive of roughly ten to fifteen minutes.

  • Bus: KTEL buses run from the airport and are the budget-friendly way to get into town. The stop is just outside the terminal doors, opposite the taxi rank. Some buses run to Fabrika station on the south side of Mykonos Town, about ten minutes without traffic. Others go to the New Port, which suits travelers staying nearby or catching a boat.
  • Taxi: Taxis wait outside the terminal, but the island has relatively few, so expect a wait in peak season. Fares are metered, and airport transfers and extra luggage can cost more.
  • Rental car: Desks are at the airport.

Uber and Lyft don't operate on Mykonos. Many visitors download iMove or DriveMe before they fly, and a pre-booked taxi or minibus waiting on arrival is a quick way to reach your hotel.
