Porto Katsiki Beach: The Cliff Stairway, Boats from Nidri and the Drive from Lefkada Town

You reach Porto Katsiki from above, parking at the edge of a pale cliff and looking down at a curve of rock that falls straight into the Ionian Sea. The water below is the blue the island is known for, and a stairway leads down to the beach. This is a beach on the west side of Lefkada, a visit built around the cliff, the sea and the approach to both.

Is visiting Porto Katsiki worth it?

Yes, for anyone who comes to Lefkada for the coast and wants to see the beach the island is best known for: a concave pale cliff with the sea at its foot, rather than a strip of sand behind a row of hotels.

What sets it apart from other beaches around Lefkada is the setting itself. Porto Katsiki is famed for its landscape and its clear blue sea, and the cliff curves around the bay like the inside of a bowl.

There is no lodging here and camping is prohibited, so nothing competes with the view. Parking lots and canteens sit at the top, which means the visit has a simple shape: arrive, look, descend, spend time by the water, climb back.

The name tells the story of the place. Porto Katsiki means goat port, and it is said to come from the time when only goats could reach this stretch of coast. Standing at the top, looking at the drop, that explanation is easy to believe.

What to see at Porto Katsiki

The pale cliff above the beach

The cliff is what you notice first and what you remember. It is pale, it curves inward, and the beach sits at its base, so the whole bay feels enclosed by one wall of rock. Seen from the parking area at the top, the cliff face and the sea beneath it make the frame for every photograph taken here.

Look at how the pale stone meets the water. The contrast between the light rock and the deep blue of the Ionian Sea gives the place its character, and it changes as the sun moves across the sky. Take a few minutes at the top before descending, because from here you take in the full curve of the bay in one look.

The stairway down to the beach

A stairway runs down to the beach from the cliff-top parking. It is the way people on foot get to the sand, and it turns the visit into a small descent with the bay opening out below you at every turn. The route is also the reason the place feels set apart: the beach is down there, and it changes as the sun moves across the sky.

Because the way down is a stairway, think of the return climb when you plan your day. Anyone with limited mobility, or traveling with a stroller, should weigh that before committing. The boats from Nidri are another way to arrive, and they skip the stairs entirely.

The beach and the sea at the foot of the cliff

At the bottom, the scene is the clear blue sea the beach is famed for, set against the wall of pale rock.

In the day, boats bring visitors to Porto Katsiki, particularly from nearby Nidri. Seeing the beach from the water is a different view from the one at the top, with the cliff rising straight above the shoreline rather than spreading out below you.

The cliff-top parking and canteens

At the top you find parking lots and canteens. The canteens are the simple kind of refreshment stand found at Greek beaches, the place for a cold drink or a snack before or after the stairway. They give the cliff top a small gathering point, where people compare the view, rest and decide when to go down.

The parking lots are also the place to take in the whole scene at once, with the road behind you and the bay in front. Keep in mind that there is no lodging at Porto Katsiki, so everything about the visit happens between the lots, the stairway and the sea.

How to get to Porto Katsiki

Porto Katsiki is on the Ionian island of Lefkada, near Athani village, and it lies a good distance from Lefkada town, the island’s capital and port. Lefkada town is known for its distinctive house colors, narrow alleyways and courtyards, which makes it a pleasant place to start the day before heading to the coast.

From Lefkada town by road

The beach is 22 miles from Lefkada town, and the road ends at the cliff-top parking lots, where the stairway begins. From there you walk down. The route passes near Athani village before arriving at the cliff edge, and the parking lots are the place to leave the car.

Lefkada town itself is the practical base for reaching the beach, with its port and its role as the island’s capital. If you are staying elsewhere on the island, the same cliff-top lots are your destination.

Arriving on Lefkada: the bridge and the airports

Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a long causeway and a floating bridge, one of the few Greek islands reached this way. The bridge opens every hour on the hour to let yachts cross. In August, at peak weekend times, it can cause significant delays if you arrive when it is closed or has just opened, which matters when your day ends at a cliff-top beach.

Two airports serve the area. The principal town of Lefkada is approximately 25 minutes by car from Aktion National Airport. The airport near Preveza is a 20-minute drive from Lefkas town, at the north tip of Lefkada. Those times take you to the town, and the trip on to Porto Katsiki follows from there.

By boat from Nidri

In the day, boats bring tourists to Porto Katsiki beach, particularly from nearby Nidri. This is the alternative to the road and the stairway, and it gives you the beach from the sea, with the pale cliff rising above the shore as you approach.

Nidri sits across the water from the island of Skorpios, which once belonged to Aristotle Onassis. Lefkada is encircled by smaller isles, and the boat trip is a way to see some of that island-studded coast from the water.

When to visit Porto Katsiki

Boats bring visitors to Porto Katsiki in the day, so the beach is a daytime place, shared with the people who arrive from the cliff-top lots and from Nidri. If the plan is to see the bay from the water as well as from the stairway, daylight is when the boats come.

The summer detail that matters most is the bridge. In August, at peak weekend times, the Lefkada bridge can cause significant delays if you arrive when it is closed or has just opened. Since the bridge opens every hour on the hour for yachts, a drive from the mainland toward the beach can be held up, and that is worth keeping in mind when weekend traffic is heavy.

What you see today is the beach as it stands after that event, still set under…, still set under the same curving pale cliff that gives the place its name and its look.

There are no lodging options at Porto Katsiki and camping is prohibited, so any visit is a day visit from a base elsewhere on the island. Plan the timing around where you sleep, whether in Lefkada town, near Nidri or elsewhere, and around the drive to the cliff top.

Tips for your visit

Bring what you need for a beach day, because the facilities at the top are parking lots and canteens, and nothing else. Since the beach lies at the foot of a cliff, you carry whatever you take down the stairway and back up again, so pack with that climb in mind.

Planning the stairway

The stairway runs from the cliff-top parking to the beach. Treat it as part of the visit: you go down to the sea, and you return the same way unless you leave by boat. Wear shoes you are comfortable walking in, and think about how much you want to carry.

Families and anyone with limited mobility should weigh the stairway before deciding between the cliff-top view and the beach itself. The cliff-top lots and canteens give you the view of the bay without the descent, and the boats from Nidri give another way to reach the shore.

Food and drink at the top

The canteens at the cliff top are the place for a drink and something simple to eat. Greek beach canteens typically serve cold drinks, coffee, sandwiches and snacks, and they make a natural pause before the stairway or after the climb back up.

If you want a proper meal, plan it around Lefkada town, where the narrow alleyways and courtyards are full of places to sit down, or around the villages near Athani.

What to combine with the beach

A day at Porto Katsiki pairs well with Lefkada town, the island’s capital and port, known for its distinctive house colors, narrow alleyways and courtyards. Walking its streets gives you a different side of the island from the cliff and the sea.

A boat trip from Nidri adds the island-studded coast, including Skorpios, once owned by Aristotle Onassis. Lefkada is encircled by smaller isles, and seeing them from the water gives context to the beach you have come to see.

Good to know before you go

There is no lodging at Porto Katsiki and camping is prohibited, so base yourself elsewhere on Lefkada and come for the day. The beach has parking lots and canteens at the top, and a stairway leads down from the cliff.

The beach was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake, and the cliff above it is the main feature of the place. Treat the cliff edge and the stairway with the respect any steep coastline deserves, and follow any signs posted at the top.
