The best months are April to June and September to October. Spring and early fall bring pleasant days without the full force of summer, fewer crowds around the Acropolis, and café terraces and ancient sites that are a joy to explore. Late spring and early fall are the sweetest stretches of all, with mild temperatures and smaller crowds.

When is the best time to visit Athens?
The shoulder months are the sweet spot. The weather is warm but manageable for sightseeing and open-air dining, and crowds are thinner than in summer.
Spring is the season of color. Streets bloom, the National Garden near Syntagma Square comes back to life, and the city fills with festivals. June is the official start of summer, and the heat builds with it. Fall is calmer and more local. Summer's throng has gone back to school and work, and the city settles into a slower rhythm. September still feels like summer, so it suits anyone who wants swimming and sightseeing in the same trip.
Greek Orthodox Easter is the biggest date to plan around. It moves every year and sometimes lands in May. The whole country takes a holiday and hotels fill up, so book well ahead if your dates are close. The Good Friday candlelit processions are a moving sight, and one of the most impressive climbs Lykavittos Hill.
March 25 is Greek Independence Day, a public holiday with a military parade near Syntagma Square. Shops close and the Acropolis itself is shut that day. The Acropolis Museum stays open as a free day, which makes it very busy, so plan both for another date.

Winter is mild, warmer than much of Europe, though the days are short. Pack warm layers and an umbrella. December is the wettest month and sunshine comes and goes. Some winters bring a light dusting of snow to the ancient monuments, a lucky sight for those who happen to be there.
March can still bite, with sea winds that call for a light jacket. By April you're walking in comfortable air under clear skies, and May is warm enough for the outdoor sites without punishing heat. The sea is too cold for swimming in early spring, but beach days start to make sense by May.
June brings little rain, long bright days and water warm enough for a dip. Plan the big sights for early morning or late afternoon, when the heat eases and fewer people are around.
July and August are hot and dry. Do your sightseeing in the morning and spend afternoons in the shade, in a museum or at the beach. Once the stars come out, so do the locals, and the city wakes up for concerts, outdoor cinema and nightlife. Forest fires are common in these dry months and occasionally close roads, so check local news before heading out of the city.
Fall starts warm. September is still a beach month, though evenings cool off, and a light jacket earns its place in your bag from late in the month. October is mild and comfortable for long walks among the ruins. By November temperatures drop and the rain returns.
When is Athens busiest, and when is it quiet?
Summer is peak season. Tour groups and cruise passengers crowd the top sights, especially the Acropolis. If you go then, book a skip-the-line tour or arrive early, and plan to be out of the sun by midday.
In August many Athenians leave for the islands and villages, and some restaurants, galleries and bars close for a stretch. You'll still eat well and find souvenirs, and city traffic is calmer. Around August 15, the Feast of the Assumption, Greeks take to the roads and boats, so reserve transport and rooms well ahead if you're traveling mid-month.
Spring gives you space. You'll have elbow room at the Parthenon, in Plaka and along the winding lanes of Anafiotika. In fall the crowds thin out by the second half of September, though a few beach clubs and island day trips slow down too. November is one of the quietest months, with space at the top sights and no big holiday disruptions. Winter is quieter still, and restaurant tables are easy to get.
When is it cheapest to go?
Winter is cheapest. Hotel rates hit their lowest of the year from about November through March.
Fall is the next best value. Airfare and hotel prices begin to fall after peak season, and by October they are noticeably friendlier. Spring is a fair compromise, with reasonable prices and crowds outside Easter week.
Summer costs the most. June opens peak season, and flights and rooms stay at their priciest until it ends, so budget travelers should skip high summer if they can.
Is Athens worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you want a quiet trip full of culture and comfort. The ancient ruins and major museums are open year-round, and in the cooler months the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum can feel almost like your own. Nightlife stays lively, with clubs and bouzoukia running into the early hours.
December brings bright lights, Christmas markets in squares like Kotzia and Syntagma, ice skating and concerts. January has Athens Wine Week, with pop-up tastings of Greek producers. Bring an umbrella and keep a flexible plan for gray days. The beaches are out of season, but the thermal lagoon at Lake Vouliagmeni, south of the city, offers a warm, restorative swim.
Which month is right for you?
- Beach swimmers: May through October, when the sea is warm enough for swimming at nearby beaches like Vouliagmeni and Kavouri.
- Party-goers: high summer, for festivals, rooftop bars and sprawling beach clubs.
- Sightseers: the shoulder months, when you won't wilt on the Acropolis.
- Budget travelers: winter, or October for a gentler mix of savings and good weather.
- People who hate crowds: November and the winter months, or late September.
- Festival fans: summer for the Athens Epidaurus Festival, jazz and open-air cinema. Spring and fall have their own lineups, including Art Athina in September and the Athens Marathon in November.
For Americans
The U.S. State Department says U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you may be asked for proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket. A passport that has been reported lost or stolen will not be accepted for entry into Greece, and you may be sent back to where you departed from. Greece is a generally safe destination, but petty crime is common at tourist sites and on public transportation, especially pickpocketing on the metro. Strikes and demonstrations can happen with little notice and may interrupt taxis, public transportation, ports and airports, so it helps to check the news before you travel.
