December in Athens suits travelers who like walking straight up to the Acropolis with no line, and who don't mind packing a coat. The city is mild by European standards, often sunny, sometimes wet, and dressed up for the holidays.

What is the weather like in Athens in December?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainfall | Sunshine per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 66°F (19°C) | 54°F (12°C) | 2.9 in (74 mm) | 4.9 h |
| December | 58°F (15°C) | 47°F (8°C) | 3.4 in (86 mm) | 3.8 h |
| January | 56°F (13°C) | 45°F (7°C) | 2.3 in (59 mm) | 4.5 h |
Days are cool and often bright. Mornings and evenings call for a real layer, while the middle of the day is usually pleasant enough for a long walk between ancient sites.
Rain comes with the season. Storms are rare and usually short, and light rain is the more common sight, so a cafe or museum stop easily fits into the day. Snow is extremely rare in central Athens and melts quickly when it does fall.
The sea is too cold for swimming, so save the beach for another season and treat this as a culture and food trip.
How does December compare with November and January?
November feels like late autumn. It is warmer and a little drier than December, and it's a lovely month for day trips and for walking the city center, though rainy days are already on the rise.
January is the coldest month in Athens, though it stays fairly mild for a European city. Rain is common, but so are sunny days.
December sits between the two in temperature, and it gets more rain than November or January. It is also the month when the Christmas season is in full swing, so if festive lights and markets matter to you, December is the pick.
Is December a good time to visit Athens?
For most travelers, yes.
Costs drop too. December is shoulder-to-low season, so hotel rates run lower than in summer, and flights, dining and tours often follow. Some hotel amenities close for the winter, so if a rooftop pool matters to you, confirm it is open before booking. From November through March, historical sites are free on the first Sunday of each month, which makes that day worth building a trip around.
Nearly everything stays open, including archaeological sites, restaurants, tavernas, cafes, rooftop bars and shops, with shorter hours on holidays. The Acropolis and other major archaeological sites close on December 25 and 26 and again on January 1. Most restaurants and bakeries still open on Christmas Day. Public transport can wind down early on Christmas Day, so check schedules before planning an airport run or a train connection that day.
What is there to do in Athens in December?
Begin with the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. Cool air and thin crowds make the climb far more pleasant than in summer. Some visitors like to begin at the museum and climb to the Acropolis in the afternoon, when the morning cruise crowds have usually thinned out. Afterward, Philopappos Hill has easy trails and viewpoints over the Acropolis, a walk that's far more enjoyable now than in August.
Then follow the holiday trail. Syntagma Square in central Athens puts up a huge Christmas tree and lights, and free concerts often pop up near the Parliament building. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center adds ice skating, a lights walk and concerts, and it doubles as a good indoor refuge on a rainy day. Christmas villages and neighborhood bazaars appear around the city, among them the family-friendly Technopolis Christmas Factory in Gazi, with sweets, crafts and festive drinks. In the bakeries, look for melomakarona (honey cookies), kourabiedes (almond sugar cookies) and vasilopita (the New Year's cake).
When the air turns chilly, head for Little Kook, a cafe that changes its theme every season and goes all in on Christmas in December. It's a lovely spot for hot chocolate and a slice of cake in December. Winter is also a good time for a food tour built around Greek comfort dishes like moussaka.
Stay through New Year's Eve, and the night usually ends with fireworks lighting up the whole city.
Where can you go from Athens in December?
The mainland is the better winter bet. A full-day guided bus tour reaches the ancient site of Delphi. Delphi sits higher up, so expect it to be cooler and wetter than Athens. If you rent a car, Greek law requires an international driver's permit along with your U.S. license, even if the rental company doesn't ask for it. Thieves are known to break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so it is wise to take them with you when you park.
The Greek islands are a poor December choice. Even the larger ones, such as Crete, Rhodes and Naxos, stay open year-round but aren't warm, and many shops close. If you're set on an island, Crete is the best option, reached by ferry or flight.
What should you pack for Athens in December?
A waterproof or water-resistant jacket and a compact umbrella handle the showers. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the historical sites and uneven ground. Water-resistant ones help on wet days, though plenty of people manage in sneakers.
A scarf and hat take up little room and earn their place on a windy evening, even if they spend most of the trip in your bag. If you plan to join holiday festivities, pack something a bit dressier, or a cheerful Christmas sweater. A small daypack helps on day trips. Greece uses Type C and Type F outlets, so bring an adapter.
What do Americans need to know to enter Greece and stay safe?
U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport that has been reported lost or stolen will not get you in. Officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure.
Greece is a generally safe destination, but petty crime is common in tourist areas, and pickpocketing is a particular risk on the metro. Strikes and demonstrations are common too, often with little notice, and they can halt public transport, taxis and airports, so leave some slack in your schedule, especially around your flight home.
