How to Get to Argos from Athens: Bus, Car, Train and Taxi

Argos sits inland in the northeastern Peloponnese, about 80 miles (128 km) from Athens, on the Argolic Plain with mountains all around. The town has no airport, so the trip starts with a flight into Athens and finishes on the ground. For most visitors, the KTEL Argolidas bus is the easiest way to make that last leg, and it takes about two hours. A rental car is the better pick if you plan to explore the region.

How do you get to Argos from Athens?

By bus (the best choice for most people)

KTEL Argolidas runs the service. Buses leave from Kifissos station on Leoforou Kifisou in Athens, stop at Corinth, and arrive at the Argos bus station in the Agios Vasileios area.

Bus times from Athens to Argos vary a bit: the quickest run takes about 1 hour 38 minutes, the typical trip is around 1 hour 44 minutes, and routes with transfers can take up to 1 hour 55 minutes. Budget about two hours.

By car

The drive from Athens takes about 1 hour 38 minutes and covers 79 miles. Take the Athens to Corinth National Road (E94), then follow the exit for Argos.

A car pays off if you also want to explore Nafplio and other spots around the plain, since you can set your own route and stop where you like. Before you rent, know the rules. The U.S. State Department notes that Greek law requires visitors to carry a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Talking or texting on a phone while driving is illegal, and Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the European Union, so drive with care. Thieves in Greece break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so it is wise to take your belongings with you when you park.

By train and taxi

You can take the train from Athens to Zevgolateio Korinthias, then finish the trip to Argos by taxi. The whole journey takes about 2 hours 5 minutes. That is close to the bus time, but with a change in the middle, so the bus is the simpler choice for most travelers. If you do go this way, Argos Taxi answers at +30 2751 022000.

By taxi from Athens

A taxi covers the 79 miles in about 1 hour 38 minutes, the same as driving yourself. It's the easiest option if you arrive tired, with plenty of luggage, and want to reach your hotel as fast as possible.

Is it better to take a ferry or fly to Argos?

Neither one gets you there. Argos is inland, so no ferries call there. The nearest international gateway is Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (ATH).

How do you get from Athens airport to the bus station?

Take a bus or a taxi from the airport to Kifissos Bus Station. The airport and the Athens metro are fully accessible, with ramps and elevators, which helps if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or a stroller.

Give yourself a buffer between your flight and the bus. If you land in the afternoon, check the timetable before counting on a same-day connection. Spending a night in Athens and catching a morning bus is a relaxed way to begin.

How do you book a bus to Argos?

For the Argos to Athens direction, you can't book online. Buy your ticket at the station or a local kiosk before you travel, or on the bus at stops without a ticket office.

Travel websites list times and prices for this route, but treat them as a rough guide. To confirm times and tickets, call KTEL Argolidas at +30 27520 27423.

How do you get from other towns to Argos?

Nafplio is the closest link. It's about 6 miles (10 km) away, and the direct KTEL Argolidas bus takes about 15 minutes. Buses leave from Andrea Siggrou, Plateia Niketara in Nafplio. Drivers can take the Argos to Nafplio road (EO Argous – Nafpliou) instead.

How do you get around once you're in Argos?

The center is easy to cover on foot. The Archaeological Museum is a short walk from the KTEL bus stop and about 20 minutes on foot from the railway station stop. Drivers can park in the modern market area near the museum, except on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the market is open.

The fortress on the hill above town has closed for repairs in the past without any notice online, so check that it's open before you make the climb.

What does the U.S. State Department say?

U.S. citizens can visit Greece without a visa for up to 90 days of tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date.

On buses and the metro, keep your valuables close, since pickpockets work public transport, especially the metro. Make sure you have the right ticket and validate it; riding without a valid ticket can bring a fine of up to 60 times the basic fare.

Transportation strikes are common and can stop public transport, taxis, ports and airports, and demonstrations can disrupt services with little warning. Check for strikes before you leave Athens, and allow extra time on any day you also have a flight.
