October is the month Orlando starts to cool without closing anything. September’s average high of 89.6°F drops by almost five degrees, rainfall falls by close to half, and the springs north of town keep the water temperature they hold all year. For a family trip built around the parks, that puts the long queues in milder air.
The Atlantic hurricane season stays open all month: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs it to November 30 and counts most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Book the flight and the room with that window in mind, choose park days by crowd calendar, and keep one spring morning for a clear forecast. Disney and Universal price tickets by date, so we leave amounts to them and to our Florida with kids guide.

Most October trips fly into Orlando International (MCO). The FAA counted 27,859,783 passengers boarding there in calendar year 2024, more than at any other Florida airport, Miami included. Sanford (SFB) boarded 1.4 million the same year and sits north of MCO. We could not verify its distance from the parks, because the airport’s site blocked our connection, so we give no drive time. Every figure here comes from a real thermometer: the NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USW00012815 at Orlando International Airport. These are station normals measured on the ground, and they can differ from the grid-cell reanalysis some weather apps display. The airport averages a high of 84.7°F and a low of 66.2°F in October, with 3.46 inches of rain across the month. The parks and the springs sit miles from that gauge, so treat the numbers as the airport’s own.
Rain of at least a tenth of an inch falls on 5.3 days in an average October, roughly one day in six. A day with an inch or more comes 0.9 times per October, close to once a month. On a five-day trip, the average works out to a little under one wet day, so build one indoor block into the plan and slot it wherever the forecast puts the showers.
An October day at the airport swings from 66.2°F at dawn to 84.7°F in the afternoon. Pack long sleeves or a light sweater for a 7:30 a.m. start at a park gate or a spring, then shorts, a hat and sunscreen for the rest of the day. Add a packable rain shell for the downpour that arrives about once a month.
On October 15 Orlando gets about 11 hours 31 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 7:25 a.m. and sets at 6:56 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, so dinner falls after dark and any paddle on a spring run should be off the water before 7 p.m.
How warm is Orlando in October?
In Celsius, October’s average high is 29.3°C and its low 19.0°C. The 18.5°F gap between them is wider than September’s 17.2°F and narrower than November’s 20.1°F, so each month of the fall adds a little more spread between morning and afternoon.
Wear a long-sleeved layer over a T-shirt for the morning and expect to carry it by noon. For swimming, the springs are the reliable water: USGS gauges read 74.3°F to 75.6°F on September 11, 2026. Orlando has no coastline, and we found no sea-temperature reading for October. If you check a beach table for either coast, those figures are usually averages of daily maxima, a little warmer than a 24-hour mean.
We found no count of freezing nights in the NOAA normals we read for October. The average low sits at 66.2°F, more than 34°F above freezing. A real jacket for after dark belongs in the bag only if you shift the trip to November, whose average low is 58.2°F.
How busy is Orlando in October? Crowds and prices
We found no hotel-rate or occupancy series for Orlando, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. The calendar fact we can give concerns March: family school holidays fill the theme parks that month, while college spring break weighs on the beach towns. Our sources name no October surge of that kind. For park crowds by date, the operators publish their own calendars.
We have no booking-curve data, so we give no number of weeks ahead. October booking depends on the hurricane window, with NOAA placing most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Orange County, home to Orlando and the parks, levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on stays, filed and paid together with the 6% state sales tax. Between them, expect at least 12% on top of the nightly rate. Compare quotes with taxes included, since some sites show the room before them.

Things to do in Orlando in October
October lets you hike and swim on the same morning. The average high of 84.7°F sits nearly five degrees under September’s, so the trails are easier going, while the spring water stays where it was in summer. By November, the average low of 58.2°F makes a dawn swim a colder proposition out of the water.
Wekiwa Springs State Park, the nearest spring to Orlando, counts 325 parking spaces, one swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail and 1,435 feet of boardwalk in the state’s 2024 inventory. Rock Springs, the tubing run at Kelly Park, read 75.0°F on September 11, 2026. Blue Spring State Park adds 3,050 feet of boardwalk, three observation platforms and 187 parking spaces, with water at 74.3°F. Lake Louisa State Park offers five launches, one swimming area and 20 cabins.
The spring water barely moves through the year, and the air around it does. In October, a 66.2°F dawn against 75.6°F water makes the first swim feel warm. Manatees use the same difference in winter: they gather at springs such as Blue Spring once the river around them cools. We could not verify entrance fees or park hours, because floridastateparks.org refused our reads on September 11, 2026, so we name nothing free and quote no gate price. The USGS water readings cost nothing to check: station 02234600 covers Wekiwa, 02234610 Rock Springs and 02235500 Blue Spring. Orlando in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at Wekiwa Springs. Leave around 7:30 a.m., just after the 7:25 a.m. sunrise, to reach the 325-space lot early, then swim or paddle while the air sits near its 66.2°F average low. Drive back into town by noon as the afternoon climbs toward 84.7°F, eat lunch indoors, and give the hottest hours to the hotel pool. Book dinner for after the 6:56 p.m. sunset.
Day two goes to the theme park of your choice, with tickets bought from Disney or Universal at their dated price. If thunderstorms are forecast, stay off the spring runs and swap the order so the indoor part of the plan comes first. From September to October the average high drops 4.9°F and the low 6.2°F, and rainfall falls from 6.37 to 3.46 inches, 2.91 inches less. November goes further, with highs down another 6.4°F to 78.3°F, lows down 8.0°F to 58.2°F, and just 3.0 days with a tenth of an inch of rain. We hold no sea reading for any of the three, and the springs read the same whichever you pick.
Shifting four weeks earlier into September adds heat and rain: 9.2 rain days, highs of 89.6°F and the hurricane peak on September 10. Four weeks later, November is the driest and coolest of the three and reaches the end of the season on November 30, with 58.2°F nights where a jacket helps. Is October a good time to visit Orlando?
Yes for families planning park days without September’s heat, and for anyone who wants a spring swim and a trail walk in the same trip. No for travelers who cannot move their dates: October sits inside the hurricane season, and a non-refundable booking carries that risk in full.

Settle the cancellation terms before you settle the park, and October in Orlando becomes an easy month to say yes to.
