KEY WEST · JULY · MILE MARKER 0
July is the month Key West stops pretending to be anything but tropical. NOAA’s normals for the island read 90.2°F by day and 80.6°F by night, the sea off Key West averages 88.7°F, and on July 15 the sun is up for 13 hours 33 minutes, from 6:46 a.m. to 8:19 p.m. Rain totals 3.63 inches across about seven wet days, less than either June or August.
The Atlantic hurricane season opened June 1 and runs to November 30, peaking September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. A July week therefore sits inside the season and ahead of its worst stretch. Midday walking is another matter at 90.2°F, and Old Town’s blocks do not shrink for anyone. For the dry-season alternative, our Florida timing guide makes that case in full.

KEY WEST AT A GLANCE · JULY
July gives Key West the second-warmest water of the three summer months at 88.7°F and the driest of them at 3.63 inches, in exchange for 90.2°F days and a hurricane season already open.

Every figure here carries its source. The temperature and rain lines come from NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012836, the gauge at Key West International Airport, which is a thermometer on the island rather than a modeled grid cell averaged over open water. The water reading comes from a marine dataset, and it is built differently. Numbers you find elsewhere may not match these, so compare like with like.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publish the 1991-2020 normals for station USW00012836 at Key West International Airport, and July there averages a high of 90.2°F, a low of 80.6°F and 3.63 inches of rain. Those are readings from an instrument a few feet above the island, not an average of a cell of ocean, and that is the version we serve.
In an average July, 6.8 days record at least a tenth of an inch, so measurable rain turns up on roughly one day in five. Spread 3.63 inches over those days and a wet one averages about half an inch. Only 0.8 day brings an inch or more, so most Julys hand you a single genuine soaking and the other wet days rarely cost you a beach afternoon.
The gap between day and night runs 9.6°F, and a low of 80.6°F means the island never really cools: no evening on the calendar asks for a layer. Pack for water and rain instead. A shell that folds into a pocket handles the half-inch afternoon, a hat and a refillable bottle handle the walking, and a second shirt handles the fact that the first will not dry.
On July 15 the sun rises at 6:46 a.m. and sets at 8:19 p.m. Eastern, giving 13 hours 33 minutes of daylight. Both ends of that are usable in a way that noon is not. The Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square begins about two hours before the sun goes, so around 6:20 p.m. in mid-July, and dinner in Old Town lands after 8:30 for anyone who stays through it.
Can you swim in Key West in July? Water temperature and the storm calendar
Sea surface off Key West averages 88.7°F in July in the Open-Meteo Marine record, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024. That construction matters when you read the number: a daily maximum is the warmest moment of each day, so the figure sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean, and any table built the other way will print something lower for exactly the same water.
At 88.7°F there is no entry shock and no acclimatization. There is also no cooling. Swimmers used to a cooler coast misjudge that part: an hour in July water leaves you as warm as you went in, so shade and a bottle do more for the afternoon than towel time does. Children go in at 8 a.m. and would happily stay until the park gate closes at sundown.
We could not verify wind or wave figures for July in Key West, so we give none. The storm calendar we can date: the Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, per the National Hurricane Center. A July week sits inside the season and ahead of its busiest stretch. Book refundable, check the tropics the week you fly, and read the Florida basics once before you pack.
How busy is Key West in July? Crowds, parking rates and the tax on your room
July lands in Florida’s wet season and in the middle of the American school break. That is a calendar fact and not a price. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Key West, so we crown no month cheapest or dearest here. What we can price is what is published: the tax on the room, and the cost of leaving a car anywhere near Old Town.
One July booking carries a real deadline. The Yankee Freedom III leaves for Dry Tortugas at 8 a.m. daily, check-in before 7:30, and it sells out weeks ahead: the operator’s own advice is a month in advance at minimum. Nothing else on the island demands that. The Hemingway Home takes walk-ins 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, and Fort Zachary Taylor takes your money at the gate.
Monroe County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid alongside the 6% state sales tax, per Florida Department of Revenue form DR-15TDT. Eleven percent on the room is therefore the floor, before whatever resort fee or parking charge a property adds on top.
Parking is the line where July money buys something real. Street meters run $3.00 an hour, the Old Town Parking Garage $6 an hour or $48 a day plus tax, the Mallory Square lot $7 an hour or $48 a day with a ten-hour cap, the Key West Bight lot $5 an hour or $40 a day. City rates change, so confirm them before you budget. At 90.2°F, paying a day rate once beats circling for a meter, and a bed inside Old Town beats driving in twice.
Things to do in Key West in July: Fort Zachary Taylor, the Hemingway Home and Dry Tortugas

Of the three summer months, July is the driest: 3.63 inches against June’s 4.23 and August’s 5.37. Its water also runs 2.1°F warmer than June’s 86.6°F, and the month falls before mid-August, when Atlantic activity picks up. That combination is what makes a July crossing to Dry Tortugas, 70 miles west with no road or bridge to it, a fair bet on a fixed and expensive ticket.
Fort Zachary Taylor holds the beach most often called the island’s best, within walking distance of Old Town: $6.00 per vehicle for up to eight people plus a $0.50 county surcharge per person, $4.50 for a single-occupant car or motorcycle, $2.50 on foot or by bicycle. The park runs 8 a.m. to sundown, 365 days a year, and the fort shuts at 5 p.m. The Ernest Hemingway Home takes walk-ins 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, $19 adults, $7 children, free under 6.
Those opening hours hold all year. The air does not. At a 90.2°F average high, the Hemingway Home’s 9 a.m. slot is the comfortable one and the 4 p.m. slot is not, and the museum’s polydactyl cats, which it says descend from the novelist’s Snow White, spend the middle of the day where you want to be. The fort’s beach gets its best three hours after the building closes at 5, with light until 8:19 p.m. and water at 88.7°F.
The Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square runs every night of the year, weather permitting, from about two hours before sunset until dusk fades, and it costs nothing: in mid-July, roughly 6:20 to past 8:45 p.m. Mile Marker 0 stands at Whitehead and Fleming, the southern end of a US-1 run of some 2,370 miles to Fort Kent, Maine. The Duval Loop bus is free across 18 stops, and published frequencies differ between sources, so read the timetable on the stop sign.
Key West in July: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at a gate: Fort Zachary Taylor opens at 8 a.m., $2.50 if you walk in, and the water is already 88.7°F before the sun has any authority. Out by 11. Lunch indoors, with key lime pie, reported to have originated in Key West in the late nineteenth century and named the state’s official pie in 2006. The Hemingway Home from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at $19. Back in the water at 4, Mallory Square by 6:20, sunset at 8:19, dinner after.
Day two belongs to the ferry if you booked it: check-in before 7:30 a.m., away at 8, about $250 for an adult in 2026 with the park entrance, snorkel gear, breakfast and lunch included, 70 miles out and back by late afternoon. If the boat was full or the crossing is called off, flat Old Town absorbs the day on foot and by free bus, with an indoor hour while the half-inch passes and the same 6:20 at Mallory Square, since the celebration runs weather permitting.
Key West in July vs June and August
| 1991-2020 normals | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 88.7°F | 90.2°F | 90.6°F |
| Average low | 79.4°F | 80.6°F | 80.5°F |
| Precipitation | 4.23 in | 3.63 in | 5.37 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 6.4 | 6.8 | 9.1 |
| Sea surface (daily max mean) | 86.6°F | 88.7°F | 88.8°F |
The three months sit within 1.9°F of each other by day, at 88.7, 90.2 and 90.6°F, and their nights fall inside 1.2°F of one another at 79.4, 80.6 and 80.5°F. Rain is what separates them. July takes 3.63 inches over 6.8 wet days, June 4.23 inches over 6.4, August 5.37 inches over 9.1. The sea follows the air with a lag: 86.6°F in June, 88.7°F in July, 88.8°F in August.
Shift four weeks earlier and you give up 2.1°F of sea temperature while gaining nothing on rain, since June pours 0.60 inch more than July across fewer wet days. Shift four weeks later and August returns the same water to within a tenth of a degree, then adds 1.74 inches and 2.3 more wet days, and it puts your week inside the mid-August to mid-October stretch that carries most Atlantic storm activity. Our June guide has that month in full.
Is July a good time to visit Key West?
Yes, if your trip is mostly water and evening. At 88.7°F you swim without thinking about it, light holds to 8:19 p.m., and 6.8 wet days out of 31 leave a pile of dry afternoons. No, if you came to walk Old Town’s streets in the middle of the day, or if your dates cannot move: 90.2°F over 80.6°F nights is not walking weather, and the hurricane season is open from the day you land.
For a no, aim at Florida’s dry season, November through April, and let our state timing guide pick the week. Staying in summer, June is the kinder month for a trip built on walking, 1.5°F cooler by day, and August is the worse one on every measure except a tenth of a degree of sea temperature.
One thing July alone gives among the three: the summer’s lowest rainfall at 3.63 inches over water already at 88.7°F, which is the pairing that makes a 70-mile boat day worth its fare.
The last word
Book the 8 a.m. ferry first and let the rest of July arrange itself around that alarm. Getting here is the other decision: Key West has its own airport, EYW, or you drive about 155 miles from Miami, near four hours without stops and six to eight with them, taking the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike as far as Florida City, an all-electronic toll road with no cash booths, then US-1 for the 113 miles of the Overseas Highway. Leave early enough that the last hour is not the hottest.
