FLORIDA · ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS · OCTOBER
The river here runs in October exactly as it ran in July. The air does not: at the nearest official thermometer the average high falls from 88.0°F in September to 82.2°F, and the month’s rainfall drops from 5.82 inches to 2.23. Floaters get both halves of the deal, a spring run that keeps its own temperature all year and an afternoon warm enough to dry off in without hunting for a patch of sun.
October takes back daylight and morning warmth. On the 15th the sun rises at 7:32 a.m. and sets at 7:01 p.m., 11 hours 29 minutes between them, and the average low has slid to 59.9°F. Aim the float at the middle of the day, and keep a dry fleece in the car for the walk back to the lot.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS · OCTOBER
October is the easiest month of the year to float Ichetucknee: 82.2°F afternoons, less than half of September’s rainfall, and water that never has a season.
AVERAGE HIGH 82.2°F · RAIN 2.23 IN · 3.7 WET DAYS · DAYLIGHT 11H 29M ON OCT 15
Go for: a weekend float with September’s rain gone, 4.2 miles of trail for the day you stay dry, and a river the state counts at more than seven miles.
Think twice before: planning a sunrise start in a swimsuit at 59.9°F, or budgeting an entrance fee we could not verify.

Every air figure here comes from one thermometer: the NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012833 at Cross City AP, about 44 km from the spring, roughly 27 miles. That is the closest official station we found, not a reading taken at the launch, and it measures air.
Ichetucknee Springs weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | October | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 82.2°F | T-shirt afternoons |
| Average low | 59.9°F | Fleece at the launch |
| Rainfall | 2.23 in | Under half of September’s 5.82 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.7 | About one day in eight |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.4 | A soaking in two Octobers out of five |
| Daylight, October 15 | 11h 29m | 7:32 a.m. to 7:01 p.m. |
Those three headline numbers, 82.2°F, 59.9°F and 2.23 inches, are station normals from NOAA NCEI over 1991-2020. They come off a real instrument at an airport west of the park, not from a gridded reanalysis cell, and the difference matters when you are deciding what to throw in the trunk. Cross City sits closer to the Gulf than the spring does, so treat the figures as the shape of the month rather than a forecast for the parking lot.
Measurable rain falls on 3.7 days of an average October, roughly one day in eight. An inch or more falls on 0.4 day, so a real soaking shows up in about two Octobers out of five. For a swimmer that is a squall arriving while you are already wet, not a canceled trip: the 4.2 miles of trail and the 1,472 feet of boardwalk both work in drizzle, and only lightning should send you to the car.
A 22.3°F spread separates the average high from the average low, and it lands at the least convenient hour, at the launch before the sun clears the trees. A fleece, a knit hat for small children and a second dry towel left in the car cover the whole gap. By two in the afternoon nothing is needed: 82.2°F dries a rash guard on the walk back.
Daylight runs 11 hours 29 minutes on October 15, sunrise at 7:32 a.m. and sunset at 7:01 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, still an hour of usable light after most people have eaten lunch twice. We could not verify the park’s closing hour, so plan against sunset and check the gate time when you arrive.
How warm is Ichetucknee Springs in October?
An average October day climbs to 82.2°F and falls to 59.9°F. September’s swing is tighter at 18.2 degrees, 88.0 down to 69.8, and November’s is wider at 25.2, from 74.4 to 49.2. October therefore delivers a warm afternoon on top of a genuinely cool dawn, and both halves belong to the same 24 hours you are trying to plan.
In practice: long sleeves and closed shoes for the first hour, a swimsuit under them, and the fleece back on the moment you climb out. Anyone floating in the last hour before sunset will be getting out into air already sliding toward the overnight figure, so the tube goes in the water by early afternoon and comes out by four if children are in the group.
Nothing in the NOAA series we read counts freezing nights at Cross City in October, and a 59.9°F monthly mean sits a long way above frost, but a mean hides its own cold tail and we will not invent a count. The same discipline applies to the water: no verified temperature reading for the spring, so no number appears here, only the discharge below.
How busy is Ichetucknee Springs in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
October sits behind the park’s loudest stretch. Florida DEP’s own visitor page puts peak summer at as many as 3,000 visitors a day across more than seven miles of river. We found no monthly visitor series and no room-rate series for the towns nearby, so we crown no month cheapest and no month busiest. We can count the ceiling, though: 909 parking spaces, and when the lot fills the gate closes.
That ceiling turns arrival time into the reservation. We could not verify a booking system, an entrance fee or an opening hour for the park, so the working rule for an October Saturday is to be parked before mid-morning and to carry a second plan for the drive. Beds are the part worth booking ahead a few weeks, and our where-to-stay guide covers how Florida’s calendar moves them.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the counties around the spring, so we give no percentage at all. Read the rate off your own booking confirmation before you compare two towns, and use our Florida cost guide for the shape of a week rather than a line item here.
One budget line genuinely changes October, and it is gear rather than access. A rash guard or a thin neoprene top makes a 59.9°F morning a non-event, and a cheap dry bag keeps the car key and the sandwiches out of 2.23 inches of monthly rain. Tube rental prices at the park were not something we could verify, so bring your own float if you own one.
Things to do in Ichetucknee Springs in October

October opens a window the neighboring months close. September pours 5.82 inches over 7.6 wet days onto the same river, and November hands you mornings averaging 49.2°F before you even reach the water. At 2.23 inches and a 59.9°F low, October lets you spend a full day outdoors around a swim instead of building the day around a forecast.
It all happens inside one park. Florida DEP’s 2024 facilities inventory counts 4 canoe, kayak and tube launches, 2.8 miles of paddling trail, 4.2 miles of hiking trail, 1,472 feet of boardwalk and 2 designated swimming areas. The department’s own visitor page names three separate canoe and tube launches on more than seven miles of river, so the launch count differs between two state documents and we serve both rather than pick one.
The spring itself ignores the calendar. A USGS gauge at Ichetucknee Springs, station 02322685, measured 23 cubic feet per second leaving the vent on September 11, 2026, and that volume is why the run stays clear: the water is replaced faster than it can cloud. What October changes is the exit, 5.8°F cooler than a September afternoon, which is why the towel matters more than the wetsuit.
We could not verify a fee, a free day or a dated October event at the park, so we name none. The trail mileage and the boardwalk cost nothing in equipment and work on a day nobody gets in the water, and our statewide things-to-do guide has the rest of the springs belt if you want a second stop on the drive.
Ichetucknee Springs in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts near the 7:32 a.m. sunrise, fleece on, and the first two hours go to part of the 4.2 miles of trail while the air climbs off 59.9°F. Float in late morning, eat afterward rather than before, then give the warmest part of the afternoon near 82.2°F to a second dip at one of the two swimming areas. Walk the 1,472 feet of boardwalk last and be off the water well before 7:01 p.m.
Day two belongs to the 2.8 miles of paddling trail and a launch you skipped, ideally the one furthest from the lot. If one of the month’s 3.7 wet days lands, a swimmer loses nothing and a picnic loses everything, so move lunch to the car. If the inch-or-more day arrives, the one that shows up in two Octobers out of five, spend the morning driving and save the river for the afternoon clearance.
Ichetucknee Springs in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 88.0°F | 82.2°F | 74.4°F |
| Average low | 69.8°F | 59.9°F | 49.2°F |
| Rainfall | 5.82 in | 2.23 in | 2.10 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 7.6 | 3.7 | 3.4 |
| Verified water temperature | none | none | none |
October’s high runs 5.8°F below September and 7.8°F above November, and its low sits 9.9 degrees under September and 10.7 above November. Rainfall is the sharper break: 3.59 inches less than September, and only 0.13 inch more than November, with wet days falling from 7.6 to 3.7. The water column stays empty across all three because no reading was available to us for any month.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy back a 69.8°F dawn, paid for with more than twice October’s rain. Shift four weeks later and you keep the dry air, 3.4 wet days, while mornings drop into the forties and the drive home starts in the dark much sooner. Our September page runs the same numbers from the other side, and the statewide calendar puts the springs in the context of a full Florida trip.
Is October a good time to visit Ichetucknee Springs?
Yes, for anyone whose day is built around the river: 82.2°F afternoons, 2.23 inches of rain across the month, and a run that flows the same whatever the air does. No, for a family that wants to be in the water at nine in the morning without anyone complaining, and no for a visitor hoping to pair the float with manatees, since we verified no manatee count for this park in any month.
If that is a no, September is the month that answers it, with an 88.0°F high and a 69.8°F low that make an early start painless, provided you accept 5.82 inches of rain and 7.6 wet days. Manatee plans belong further south and later in the year instead, and our manatee guide handles the timing.
October alone pairs rainfall under two and a half inches with an average low still near 60°F, which is the combination neither neighbor can offer.
The last word
Pick the weekend, then pick the hour: parked by mid-morning among the 909 spaces, in the water by eleven, dry by the time the 82.2°F afternoon gives way. One more thing worth knowing about the river you are floating on, Florida Statutes 373.802(5) puts Ichetucknee inside a protected class the law calls Outstanding Florida Springs, covering every historic first-magnitude spring the Florida Geological Survey recognizes plus six more named by hand in the text. Leave the fleece on the passenger seat for the walk back.
